Normally it probably would take only a day or two to write a decent Vanyel essay, truthfully. Surprisingly enough , I've also been accused of writing pretty quickly, and occasionally, even passing well. However.... This is my last full semester of college. I'm taking 18 hours of classwork, mostly history classes, including a senior seminar, which will involve a major research project and a portfolio, among other things. I'm trying to finish writing a novel, and keep up with my short story efforts. I'm playing in at least four active roleplaying campaigns, and GMing two others. On top of all that, I'm trying to pursue a serious relationship ENTIRELY OVER E-MAIL, which, by the way, I don't recommend to the faint of heart; it's time-consuming and sometimes wrenching. Now I've committed myself to writing a significant paper on Mr. Ashkevron, for the enjoyment and edification of one mailing list out of the three to which I subscribe. It will be a couple of weeks. Glad to see some new names on the rosters of the Order of Amber and Marigold! For those of you who haven't picked up on it by now, the OAM is devoted to the support of Vanyel; our members believe that he held up with grace and greatness under the almost unbearable trials life inflicted upon him, and we defend him from people who would make his life even more difficult by criticizing and second-guessing him from a comfortably removed position. We do try to be a little bit polite, though, honest Anyone is invited to join: we have only two prohibitions for our membership. 1: Thou shalt not accuse Vanyel of being whiny, bitchy, self-absorbed, heartless, or any synonyms thereof. 2: Thou shalt not threaten to commit grievious bodily harm upon Vanyel, even under the pretense of helping him see the error of his ways. No gifts are required; we're nonprofit Simply agree to the two conditions and pledge to say "pbbbpppfffbt" to others who would violate them (you can say it in the privacy of your own home, if you like; only we militant types take it to the list every bloody time the topic comes up. Some of you prefer to keep your friends...wimps ). Then append the title of Knight or Dame, according to personal preference. That's it. Oh, and while I'm plugging. I'm still pursuing plans for Mistylist DragonCon activities. So far, I have between fifteen and twenty people slated to attend; if you plan to be at DragonCon (June 26-29, Atlanta, Georgia) and haven't contacted me, it would be nice to hear from you (*especially* if you're willing to share a room with other listmembers). As many of us realize by now, Mercedes Lackey & family will be guests at the convention. Details on DragonCon can be found at the homepage... http://www.dragoncon.org Queen's Own (the official Misty fan-club) will be doing their own thing daily at the convention, open attendance. The list party (which at this point may be one or two formal parties, depending on a number of scheduling factors, and ongoing revelry centered around our unofficial hostess, Reesa) is not affiliated with Queen's Own or their doings. I mention this because a few people have written me privately to say, "Why are you doing this? I though other people had already taken care of this stuff." That's Queen's Own that's been taken care of. The Mistylist is completely separate and will have their own festivities. There will definitely be a late-night bash after the Awards Banquet, in the Atlanta Hilton, which will be a Dressy Event -- wear anything weird, flashy, or formal that your hearts desire. The goal is to be pure eye-candy Questions, comments, venom? Send to me personally. Indeed Germany doesn't like Scientologist, they are not allowed to hold "government" jobs, on all applications the question is asked, of course you can always answer no I'm not a scientologist, and nothing will happen to you, they don't follow people around --the religion police are not going out of their way to catch them. The movies with stars that are scientologist's are boycotted --by a few, but German theatres still show the movies in question and make a profit. The reason why the German government has a problem with Scientologist religion is that, the scientologist's will not open up their books, they will not come out and say exactlly what they are practicing, etc... It is a "closed" "secret" religion--at least over here it is, and I think it's like that everywhere, every person who has responded about scientology has stated " I don't know much about it". They get born with the usual accompanying shoves and mess, and, I presume, complications, given the foal-watches mentione din Arrows (can they die during birth?) They suckle from their mammas, do silly things (only example I can think of is Skif's mare's foal at Talia and Dirks's wedding), they bleed if stabbed, need to eat, pee, shit, can feel lousy (Gwenna after Falconsbane focus is smashed), and, die (Ylsa's mare when she's ambushed). All pretty physical stuff. We then have Quenten, on first seeing Gwenna and whatever Skif's is called - Cymry?? (WoF) "The aura enveloping it (Gwenna) was congruent with the creature's skin, as if controlled power was actually shining through the skin. ... And from the colours of the aura it was superior even to the .. spirit Kal'endral." Note "creature", not "horse". We also have Darkwind stunned at the sight of a Guardian Spirit. So, what are they? Horses with a few magical abilities and a human soul/spirit stuffed in? (What happens to the ordinary horsey soul?) Or are they all spirit, but with a cunningly contrived hard light drive (heavens a mix of Baldrick and Red Dwarf!)? And, oh great ones who've read SB, are *all* Companions re-inc'ed Heralds? They aren't automatons; they can decide for themselves who they want to pair up with. Anyway, even if most of the time only Seelie Court elves can have elvensteeds, that doesn't necessarily exclude Perenor from having one. It may exclude Rhia -- I don't think she was ever acknowledged by either court, so she's neither Seelie nor Unseelie -- but her father *was* Seelie Court before he was exiled. With few enough, they might even disappear. The gods may not want to get MORE worshippers, but they wouldn't want to lose them. What better safety is there than to have a nice huge bunch of followers to protect them from gods who wish to cause mayhem (let's say, hypothetically, some sort of bloodthirsty war god). After all, the interaction "sur scene" between Van and his paramours is rarely any more intimate or "gay" than the interaction between LeStat and Louis in IwtV." mm, but I think there's a difference (for some people) between roles that are *ex*plicitly or *im*plicitly homoerotic. In IwtV, someone can simply remain oblivious , or be in denial. We don't have to see much going on between Van and his current flame in order to know that it's happening, because his sexual preference is upfront (once he figures out what it is, anyway). Cruise might find the Lestat role acceptable because the story never puts a name to the character's longings. Liseth said (in response to Hth's post), "Maybe I'm blind, but I didn't see this. Of course, I *haven't* read the book. It could be something you were looking for or expected because it was in the book. That could always make something stand out more." The sensuality & etc. was in both the book and the movie, and sometimes I thought the movie *more* explicit than the book (the flying bit with the ecstatic music in the background as an expression of passion)--but as I said above, it's possible to miss it, in either text. A lot of times homoeroticism gets expressed only a little bit, and in a fashion that could be interpreted as something else. ****** Ken said, "I seem to remember Vanyel remarking that only the Mages of Valdemar had ever made contact/discovered the vrondi.[snip]If this is true, then it would argue that the Tayledras did not originate the spell. Perhaps Savil did, but on her own, rather than getting it from outside." The scene Liseth mentioned from WChange is what caused my confusion, I think--I half-remembered it. Esme pointed out that Need knew of the vrondi, but I think Van did say somewhere that only Heralds knew of them; maybe knowlege of the vrondi died out when Need's people got destroyed (or whatever happened) and the Heralds rediscovered them, unaware that they were not the first. With Kory's allusion to SoI textevd that the Tayledras did not have the Truth Spell when Savil met them, I suppose what someone said days ago is correct--a Herald-Mage invented it, and Savil or Van brought it to the Tayledras. ****** Scarlett asked, "Did Tarma and Kethry spend any time in a Vale?? At any rate, there could be similarity because Tayledras & Shin'a'in have the same cultural roots, and Tarma's Shin'a'in, or because Warrl, kyree and therefore ally of Tayls, could have seen & described to T & K the pools in the Vales. well, that's enough for now. wttw-- the Eternally Nourished Lee -97jsalaz-+AT+-uor.edu-Knight of the OAM- www.geocities.com/Athens/4709/-Spreader of Humor-Self Appointed User of 5-point Vocabulary Words Such As "Panegyric"-"I collected my thoughts. How does a description of the bathing room make any difference in whether or not they've been to a Vale, even if it was copied from the Tayledras? Anyway, it wasn't that close. The bathing pools that the Tayledras have don't have drains. -----------------************** ObMisty: Are any of the short stories in SoI about those things that Van did to get him names like "Demonsbane" and "Shadowstalker"? Can you provide textevd for this? I don't remember Van ever saying that there was "Goddess of Valdemar," just that he served "a goddess." Since there are a number of deities who are worshipped in Valdemar, and since Van was also heavily influenced by the Tayledras, I assumed that he was talking about either Astera or the Shin'a'in and Tayledras Goddess. (sorry about the format, copying and pasting always seems to do that.) I would gladly go searching through my books and give you evidence but, to quote someone onlist whose name I can't recall - what do you know my books are all at home. I can't get my hands on any copies on short order - I believe it was in the Winds when Van redirects Firesong's gate destination to the Forest of Sorrows. Howver, it's been a while and I'm starting to doubt myself. Maybe I've been at school too long and I'm hallucinating. I'll post if I find it, but it might take a while. Now that I think about it (something I haven't done in a while) it really wouldn't make sense for Valdemar to have a Goddess because of the multitude of religions. I guess maybe I was making up stuff. I'll just have to find the time and check it out. However, (although my memory might be faulty on this) other than the complete failing of magic at the end, and the death of the old Emperor, the empire still stood. Granted they're going to be so immeresed in getting their neck out of the noose with riots and civil disorder and complete chaos that they won't bother anyone for a while, but it still exists. What my point, or rather question, is did anyone else feel that Misty kind of left that part of the story hanging. There was no direct confrontation between Valdemar and the Empire, so nothing really got resolved. I don't know if there are sequels planned or not. Does anyone think that this will be picked up in later books? Also, I remember Elspeth or Darwind saying after they figured out how to shield nodes in Hardorn so they don't erode away that they need to inform the leaders of all the lands how to set up the shields for the final storm. I don't think anyone informed the Empire, so what happened in their land?
