I hate to say it, but aside from the total Valspeech, that was pretty typical of how the kids in Hershey talked. They also mixed it with PA Dutch, and you haven't heard awful til you hear people doing both at the same time. Oddly enough, the kids from Harrisburg didn't talk like that, and they would've died before saying some PA Dutch. I wasn't shocked by the way the kids in the story talked, so it didn't interfere for me. In fact, I thought Misty was doing a pretty good diatribe against letting kids run loose like that Oh, and about the temperatures, I finally got in my dorm room email working so I don't have to risk frostbite to check my listmail. I mean, consider the character of Valdemar and the precepts upon which he founded his kingdom. This is the kind of country where you won't need dungeons... come to think of it... do they even have prisons? I mean, the only case I remember was the rapist, and Talia took care of that in such a way that he wouldn't need to go to prison. Hmmm... so what do the townspeople do with their baddies if they catch them before the Heralds arrive? How do they keep them out of the way? Without prejudicing their innocence? Hmm... I'm getting really intrigued by this... I mean, the Heralds act as combination policemen and judges... the Guards can also act as policemen, but are more security type people... I seem to remember something about having judges, and Heralds having to review their papers? Does anyone have AotQ? If so, can you give me textevd, please? Oh, and somebody ('twas Firemist) was mentioning who Kero worshipped... She was Lady Wind-Born... I always got the impression that if Elspeth were ever in a position where she would be worshipping, that she would call upon the Lady Windborn. Also, Firemist also said: >Maybe there are four then Good Goddess/God and Evil Goddess/God, since Misty >has gone out of her way to point out that evil done in Vkandis' name is not >condoned by Vkandis. And anyone doing evil in the Star-eyed's name :giggle: >had better hide lest she take insult and pay the slanderer a visit. Well... have you *ever* heard Misty refer to a "Devil" type character? I just don't think she would have an Evil Goddess/God duo... it isn't her style... and I thinkthinkthink she subscribes to the "deities are neither all good nor all evil, but contain elements of both" theory. Don't ask me how or why... it's just a feel thing. And the only "Evil" creatures we've seen are... constructs and Thalkarsh... a Demon. Any more? Oh, and some people were wondering where Gods and Goddesses come from and go to after they die? Here's the Sandman theory. The Gods and Goddesses start off as dreams, and live in Dream's realm... when they have enough worshippers, etc... they become deities and move out of dreams into their own realms... usually having something to do with the temples and other-such devoted to them. When a deity grows old, they go back into dreams. there was this one really touching scene where I-don't-remember- Her-name, the ancient Egyptian Goddess of cats is wandering in dreams, and gets an prayer from a girl whose cat was hit by a car... She only has the strength to send the child (the *cat* that is) a quick death. Also, I remember her "real-life body thingie m'doodle" is wandering about, and she's hunting for rats and mice on her own, instead of having multitudes of offerings to choose from. It really makes you feel for her. Ah, well. Anyway, that's one theory on the origins and demises of deities... they start off in dreams and wander back there and die there. Yes, I'm working on revamping the NewbieFest... right now it's covering: - sheep - names - how to get the FAQ - birthdays (a shameless plug, I know :) ) - and how not to get flamed Guys, if there's anything else that should be covered, please send me :) Also, does anyone know if there's a way to get Auntie Mel's Guide to Netiquette whatever besides http? Oh, this is what private mail's for... don't worry about it. Oh, to however it was who asked how to braid... we can't help you if we don't know what your e-mail client/server is... if it's Pine... I think it's Cennydd (not sure on this) who has the guide to braiding in Pine... it might also be Mat, mine God, who has it. Just mention it once... and then everyone will get back to you :). Cause then the parents will play with their kids and spend time with them and have fun with them instead of leaving them at home all the time. I've known knife safety since I was two cause my parents couldn't keep me out of the workshop. They got it so ingrained that I would no more think of cutting someone with a knife than most people would think of turning off the TV. My parents act like little kids sometimes, and it can be a lot of fun. They wouldn't have known to teach me knife safety if they hadn't been at home in most of their free time. Deniz said: > Em, I know what you're going through. Here's a virtual >hand to hold. :) Thanks! The truly horrible part is that this is normal . I can't imagine how bad it would be if I was used to Saudi weather. And SAD is no fun in winter. Have you tried getting a nice big, bright, sun tone fluorescent light? OK, now I need an ObMisty. Aha! S P O I L E R S P A C E The cover is a total rehash of all the LHM covers. I'm sure that they're short on funds, but did they have to advertise it so blatantly? Also, those funny looking daggery things look totally useless. How would you hold them? I didn't like the two stories that Misty worked on. They struck me as mmm... sappy. There was no bite to them, and a good short story should have bite. I liked "Babysitter", "Salamander", and "The School Up the Hill" the best. I'd like to see more of Richard Lee Byers' work cause I liked "Salamander" so much. He really fit the story into a good place, and integrated it with the series in the best way out of all the stories. Babysitter was a fun read, and we got to see more about gryphons . Now that I've read "Sword of Ice" I think that Misty should be shot for letting them publish it, and the author should be shot for making all those mistakes. We all know that Starwind is gay, right? Then why didn't he clearly turn Savil down when she was drooling over him? And I could've believed one mistake about Kellan's gender, but there were a few too many to make the typo theory seem plausible. Someone should've checked! And Nightdancer, if you wish to hand out bondbirds on-list, please do so in a group. This is the solution that we have had to adopt for the Naming of Gods and Goddesses. Many people who have to pay for their download time resent it when people start sending a large number of small fluffy off-topic posts to the list. For the Namings, what I try to do is save up a list of people who have requested a Godhead and then hold a mass-naming ceremony in one post. This reduces the number of messages on what is, admittedly, a technically off-topic subject. BTW, one little tiny concern that has also come up is that if you are using "bondbirds" on a Misty list, you are probably technically guilty of infringing on intellectual property. You may want to simply offer your birds as "companion birds" or even just plain "birds" rather than using a term that in this context may be covered by Misty's copyrights. BTW, I am not saying that this is *definitely* copyright infringement. It is definitely a grey area, but it might be a good idea to avoid any unfortunate incidents in the future. Finally, for all those who have been asking about a Naming, I am going to be writing and posting the Naming ceremony today. Anyway, that was what my life was like in Holland where on Midwinter's day the sun is "up" from 9:00 to 15:30. "Up" refers to the fact that it is almost always cloudy the official weather census says it rains 1 out of every 3 days in Holland, and in December the monthly average hours of actual sunlight (as opposed to daylight) was +/- 10 hours for the whole MONTH!!!! AGH!!!!! now if only it wasn't so bloody *warm* here in houston. My thoughts are that this is the way things started and the nodes and ley-lines formed because of "erosion." A mage uses the power near them and so the power further away "erodes" the area a little so that it is now a more natural route, with the space where the mage is a kind of plateau. Now, many mages do this, and as the magic starts to vear around their plateaus they take in the magic from slightly further away letting the plateau take a gentle sloping shape until it meets the plateau of another mage. It is in this "valley" that a ley-line will form, and the more erosion that has happened, the stronger the ley-line. Nodes form at the intersection of three or more plateaus where, of course, three or more ley-lines also meet. What I want to know is if the magic has any flow in it, and, if so, what direction that flow is in. The > teenagers in the book just seemed like stereotypical 'Rich Snobbish > Airheaded Teens' to me. OK, I am not that far off from my high school days considering I graduated in '95 and I think I have to agree to a certain extent about the stereotype. Yes, the "Airhead Teen" was brought forth quite clearly in JH and most schools are not like that. However, there are schools everywhere that fit that to a "t". I am not even refering to the schools thakjt are in the rich an snotty neighborhoods. Every area has a school like that and perhaps this was the type of school that Misty wanted the scene to take place at since it is the type to get on people's nerves the fastest and that is appropriate for the storyline. Personnally, I came from a school located in a "well to do" neighborhood and I wasn't from there. There were some students that had the stereotypical attitude, but then there were others that didn't. Then when I went to a school in my neighborhood for a basketball game and met some of the "normal" students they carried off the stereotype quite well. What I am trying to say is that though high school in JH was the stereotypical "snob school" it seemed to fit for the story and Misty was not saying that all high schoolers talked and acted in that manner. Message-ID: *All is normal in the Great Hall of Misty, as the multitude of list-member discuss their topics and express their views on number of issues. Suddenly, a shimmering series of notes fall from the high vaulted ceiling as a beam of gold light, filled with emerald motes descends to the floor of the Hall and coalesces into a richly robed man of indeterminate years. A crash of cymbals and a fanfare of trumpets announces the entry of the Avatar of Nomenclature. As the List-members look up, the Avatar walks to a the currently vacant dais of the Goddess of Nomenclature. As the Avatar mounts the steps to the dais of the absent Goddess, his features blend and shift, taking on the mantle of the Lady. Turning to the host, and wrapped in the image and power of the Goddess, the Avatar addresses the gathering.* "Greetings and hail (possibly sleet, too, depending on your location). May I have your indulgence and attention. Once more, our ranks have grown within this Hall, and there have been many petitions placed upon the altar of the Lady Thessaly. In response, I come now to Name the newest members to the List Pantheon." Lady Becky, in the name of the Goddess of Nomenclature, I recognize thy title of Goddess of Tofu. I think that this was a title that did not receive a formal naming, although it was recognized and given by the Lady Thessaly. Rachel, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee to the title Goddess of Stupid Questions. As thy demesne, thou art given governance over all the multitude of questions that might be answered with a little thought and preparation (such as reading the archives or the FAQ). In recognition of thy new rank, I present thee with an engraved and ornamented book of hours, with each meditation being composed of a beautifully illuminated Question from the Misty List "Done to Death" topics list. I am sure that thou wilt receive a vast multitude of tithes from the various newbies. Be gentle with them and defend them from the sling and arrows of the list, for they are surely thy people Lady Windshadow, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee to the title of Goddess of Cynicism and Bizarre Metaphors. As thy demesne, thou canst claim rule over all who are drawn to the cynic's viewpoint. As well, thou hast dominion over the truly bizarre metaphors that abound in the realms of the List and Cyberspace. In recognition of thy new rank, I present thee with a gloriously beautiful new books of spells (which will probably not work right, given the way the world is these days, grumble, grumble...). All of the spells are based on the new, powerful REM spellcasting language (Reality Editing Metaphors) which uses magic to pull reality into conformation with metaphoric language. Liseth, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee to the title of Goddess of Running Away and Hiding Under Tables. Thy demesne shall be the hearts and spirits of those gentle souls who are ever and anon buffetted by the awareness of incipient danger. In recognition of thy new rank, I present thee with a new table. It is stoutly made of burled maple, polished to a glassy finish and carved around the edges and on the legs with a host of small timid animals peaking from behind vines and leaves. In the midst of the table top is a panel of ebony, inlaid with gold script that picks out the ancient battle-cry of the Dwarves of Skartaris: "Run Away!!!" This table is imbued with the power of thy Godhead and reinforced with the unalterable power of the Great Wheel. No levin-bolt shall ever pierce this refuge, nor shall any divine wrath mar its surface. Shadowwolf, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee to the title of God of Stupid Chess Moves. As thy demesne, thou hast rule over all the myriad and sundry ways of losing at chess as well as winning out of pure, unreduplicable chance. In recognition of thy new rank, I present thee with a chess set, the playing surface of which is carved from malachite and hawk's eye set in a jeweled frame of golden vines and thorns. Each piece is a careful and detailed sculpture of a noted historical or fictional personage who displayed extraordinary bone-headedness in making strategic or tactical decisions. Summersong, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee yto the title of Goddess of Country Twang and Cowgirl Boots. As thy demesne, thou hast rulership over those who speak with a gently drawled accent and who still value the country way. However, specifically excepted from thy demesne is the art of Country Singing, which properly falls with the demesne of the Lady Sofia, Goddess of Music. In recognition of thy new rank, I present thee with a single brilliant diamond, containing within its multifaceted depths a host of treasured folktales and folkways related in the entire spectrum of Western and Southern dialects. From this gem, the ancient voices of country wisdom whisper their secrets, including the secret lore of the Cowboy Boot. Herewiss, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee to the title of God of the Woodlands. The wooded copses and dells are given into thy keeping, to be held with love and maintained in balance. In recognition of thy new rank, I gift thee with a old and battered chest. Its dark wood sides and iron bindings give it the appearance of timeless age, as if it were as old as the Woods themselves, and the twining knotwork that wraps around its clasp suggests secret knowledge that only the spirits of the Forest will ever understand. Within the chest is a trove of pale, white stones, glowing softly with a lunar radiance. Each stone contains the stored light of the Changer's Moon and will allow its bearer to slip on the form of a Creature of the Woods for the duration of a single night. With these stones, thy servants and chosen followers may more fully experience the magic of thy demesne. Barbara/Lani, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee to the title of Murphy's Monster, The Master of Disaster. Into thy guardianship are given the fates of all those who must deal with the Imp of the Perverse. Defend them from the cruel tyranny of Murphy's Law. In recognition of thy new rank, I present thee with a gift of great power, a Veil of Serendip, which can occlude the eyes of the Imp causing his curse to fall in such a way as to yield a hidden benefit. la Sera, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee to the title of Goddess of the Eventide. As thy demesne, thou hast governance over the twilit world, where the last light of day caresses the first moonbeams of night. In recognition of thy new rank, I present thee with a Cloak of Shadows, which shall conceal all within thy protection from the piercing shafts of sunlight and the brilliant silver blades of the moon, allowing thee and thy chosen to pass, half-seen half-hidden, through the realms of the Evening. Charrach, by the Grace of the Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I hereby name thee to the title of God of Arbitration. Into thy keeping are given all the various tactics and strategies for peaceful negotiation of compromise. In recognition of thy new rank, I present thee with a lifetime membership in the Magical and Mythological Bar Association, with full access to the "Aurora I Memorial Law Library" which has the most extensive collection of references and case-histories on Mystical Law and the Code Magique. With this membership comes a special Ring of Copying, which will be recognized by any of the magical scriptorium servants and will entitle the wearer to an unlimited number of facsimile copies of rare documents and the right to check out any documents contained in the General Collection. *As each new deity steps forward and receives their gift from the Avatar, the Role of the Pantheon is seen to record their names and titles in gilded letters.* Finally, there are a few other details. For those who were interested, there is not yet a God or Goddess of Caffeine. There is however a Goddess of Gardens and Terrified Weeds. She is, Lady Barbara, the mother of the Avatar's mundane self and joins the Lady Thessaly's mother as a Greater Goddess, whose demesne may not be trespassed. (For those of you who were wondering, or forgot, Lady Thessa's mother is the Goddess of Chocolate.) What this means is that no-one can be appointed to either Chocolate or Gardening. If you must absolutely be a something of Gardening, you may apply to be the Avatar of Lady Barbara. PS: to Meg, if thou couldst let me know what Godhead thou art interested in, I can put thee in the next naming. Unfortunately, I could not think of anything that would be appropriate at the moment.
