I finished that story, thought about it for about 10 seconds, and wondered 
what the hell the point was! It started OK - Selenay, mysterious Herald, 
and then degenerates into "I wanna tell you a stooory". It then peters out 
to a "so what?" ending.

Read an undemanding little book last night - Sing the Light by Louise
Marley - The House of Speculative Fiction list the sequel to this (Sing
the Warmth - which I will bother to buy) as "set on a frozen planet where 
only the Cantrixes have the power to sing light and healing. Sequel to
Sing The Light and recommended for fans of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar 
series." It kept me from my planned early night, and I finished it because
I wanted to, not because I was fed up with it continuing.

Now I'm not sure why they think it'll appeal to ML fans - but hey, it 
appealed to me (in a lazy sort of way), and I'm an ML fan - so who knows?!

SoI annoyed me - it should have been so much better, and I was expecting
something more - can't quite put my finger on what it is I was wanting - 
I shall ponder .....

Oh, and thanks to everyone who's wishing me well with S.A.D. (Seasonal 
Affective Disorder)  It's a real pain, but it's nice having the list to talk 
to.  Oh, and I am getting a happy light soon, I hope. :)

I have a pine braiding guide I wrote last year so contact me if it's 
needed.

If Tolkien doesn't write emotions well why do I cry whenever I read about
Theoden king dying? Or when Gimli sings of the old days of Khazad-dum? Or
when Gondolin falls? Or the death of Arevdui, last king of Arthedain?(in 
the appendix fer crissake!) OR ...

Punk Rock - the stuff I recall from High School (1975-79) had the basic 
message "life stinks and it's only going to get worse no matter what you do
so why not kill yourself?" (Actually it was more negative than that but I
just can't bring myself to say that sort of thing) so I think whoever said it
was a positive thing in their country must be talking about some newer form
using an old name?

I still like the Empire sections of Storms and hope Misty explores 
this more, whetted me appetite she has.
btw, to all the "Misty is going down the tubes" faction: I disagree entirely
wtih your position. IMNSHO, Storms is as good as anything she has ever 
written (baring LHM, of course, but that is a masterpiece) I found it 
riveting, waiting for the next book was torture both times and i want 
more!!!!!<-count 'em 
Although I would like to see the books she is never going to write also.

Rogue Phoenix--You can call yourself anything you want, titles included,
but there are a few kinds of titles that have Rules:

1)MageWars--this is a sort of roleplaying list that grew out of the Misty
list.  Different groups in the Mage Wars are the Ladies and Champions in
Green, the Sunbolts, the Ones In Black, the Cat People, and...no, I think
that's it.  Well, there's also the Men In White ;> (not to be confused
with Heralds), but they haven't attacked the Mistylist since I've been
here.  If you want to join the MageWars, er, ask for help from somebody
who has one of those affiliations in their sig.  You can read about their
adventures at the MageWar archives at

2)Ladies of the Pink Wand--another of the Mistylist's offspring.  The LoPW
adore gay men in fiction (or their personas on the list) and they get
together in the Lilac Fairy's Bower.  Also in the Bower you'll find
Champions of the Pink Wand (straight males), Objects of Unrequited
Love/Lust (gay males), and one Wand-Sworn Champion of the Pink Wand (Hth).

3)The Order of Amber and Marigold--sworn to uphold Van's honor in the face
of accusations of whininess and threats to hit him in the back of the head
with a board.  To join, petition the Grand Dame of the Order, Hth

your sig (you don't have to pick "Knight" or "Dame" according to your sex;
take whichever title you prefer).  No tithes, thank you, the OAM is a
nonprofit organization.

4)Deification and clergy--Lady Thessa, currently absent from the list, is
Goddess of Nomeclature, and naming deities is her prerogative.  In her
absence, Cennydd has been acting as her Avatar.  Petition him via *private
mail* (kenny-+AT+-UDel.edu) for some domain that isn't already claimed (as far
as you can tell), with a suitable bri--uh, tithe, maybe explain why you
want that domain, and wait for a Naming ceremony.  (Be aware that you may
pick something that's already been taken and will have to think of
something else.)  Before the Naming ceremony you can sig "Hopeful
God(dess)-to-be of X", and after it you can sig "God(dess) of X."  As a
deity you have the right to accept tithes and to appoint clergy to accept
tithes for you.  If you sig yourself a God(dess) or appoint clergy before
you get Named, Cennydd will be offended on Thessa's behalf, and might
decide not to Name you at all.
	To become clergy, look around for a deity you like and petition
him/her privately to be an Acolyte or Priest.

5)You can also choose to go by a name from a book (our Terminally Cute
Elven Warrior, Korendil, for example), if you want to risk A) the
confusion when we start talking about that character, and B) the faint
annoyance of a few people who don't like it but probably won't protest it.

Well, it's a matter of differing tastes, isn't it?  I enjoy LotR, but it
leaves me fairly unmoved.  The characters aren't quite real to me.  Oh
well.

Quotes from Heather:

Sounds like a slipup to me--in MPromise, Van mentions that Starwind can't
function with a female.

It would have been nice if the main character had *learned* something from
it all.  Up to the end, where I said, "That's it?  What was the point?" I
had thought it was going to be a good story...it fell just shy of
satisfying.

Yeah again--it seemed to indirectly contradict something Van said in
MPromise about how out of control an out-of-control Gift can get in a
Chosen.
	What I'd like to see is a few rewrites--I'd hoped that if Misty
was going to break her rule about No Fanfic, she would at least demand
extremely high quality from the people she allowed to play in her sandbox.

Well, I only read the Fire Rose twice and I don't remember it well. I 
was waiting for it to come out in pbk, and then I got to college and 
became totally broke. I am rather clueless about the pouch you're 
talking about too. Could you post a quote?

One would hope. Given the way some of my relatives have turned out,

A-ha! Now I know why that part bugged me! And  in that case, why

Y'know what the problem is with SoI? A fair number of us have read 
anthologies edited by MZB, who is a darn good editor. She has a real 
knack for picking stories that illuninate something different about 
fantasy (or Darkover). If any of you have read Sword of Chaos (2nd 
Darkover antho), you prolly will have noticed that the stories are 
_interesting_ and they match up pretty well with what is cannonical 
in Darkover. SoI does not match up with cannon in several stories, 
and some of them are just plain silly (considering that I usually 
like roughly 50-80% of an anthology...). 
I've also read a number of Martin Greenberg anthologies, and most of 
them are fairly interesting. They usually have at least one brilliant 
story, 3-4 good ones, and only one or two stinkers. And since I love 
short stories I don't mind reading average ones. But SoI was missing 
the brill story, and has <imo> more than two stinkers. And I don't 
think that a mere 3 good stories makes up for all that.

Geez that is depressing! If you are thinking about SoI don't let my 
complaining get to you (unless you hate short stories). But test 
drive one or two of the stories b4 you buy the whole thing.

Firemist -- yes, I've a *very* good idea of how hot 47C is, and at the time
I wrote my last post, I didn't much care. Our heating system sort of went
kaput, it was still working, but not in my room. I was freezing in there.
So I'd rather have had 47C than -30F wind chill outside, and 12F inside my
room at night. I wore probably three layers of sleeping garment *plus* I
was under 2 blankets and a comforter to shut out the cold. And I was
wearing socks -- though only one layer of them.

That's all for small-talk <grin>. Now, for real semi-Misty content....
On the JH Rich Snobby Airhead Teen talk -- I do know a *bunch* of people
who talk like that at my school, and this is Hicktown, USA! And they sound
*so* fake. I like someone who isn't afraid to be himself/herself, and I
don't like the thick wall of makeup/muscle and the blaring airhead talk. It
is arrogant of me to say that, and I have to admit that after my ex-best
friend turned into one (and turned me into gossip fodder), I didn't really
take the time to get to know those people. But I've seen the backstabbing,
etc., and I inadvertently associate the "speak" with "attitude". I can't
say I'm not guilty of using empty words, such as "yeah", "y'know", "well",
and "uh", and variuos other phrases, like "I guess" and "okay, sure". I'm
being *very* judgemental, I realize that, and (dear gods, I hope I'm not
offending anyone here) I'm that way towards people who have adopted the
Clueless-talk, also. Though I really can't imagine that Val-speak with the
sweet Okie drawl (and I do know an Okie, with a faint drawl, and mine's
worse!).

Something totally bizarre happened just now -- and it's completely the
product of my stupid head. About two years ago, I made a tape of all my
favorite songs (I've no idea what I was thinking -- I have Billy Ray Cyrus
in there), and just now, after Billy Joel's "You May Be Right", Pink
Floyd's "Run Like Hell" came up. I think that is so bizarre.... And other
combos are: "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith, then "Main Event/Fight" by Barbra
Streisand; "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel before "You Lie" by
Reba McEntire. So there it is: Proof that I'm almost to insanity.

Heraldic gift, does (s)he automatically get chosen? What if (s)he's a Bad

block the gift, but what about the warped abuse of the Gift?

David Tiffany--I <loved> those too!  Tremaine is the best character Lackey
has come up with in years--complex, mature, and subtle.  And to top it all
off, he's even a decent human being.  :)  I'd like to see her write an
entire book about him and his intrigues.  Maybe even two or three books.  I
would not find them painful to read in the slightest.
     One thing that has struck me about Lackey's recent Valdemar books is
that she is exploring her characters' minds deeply, rather than moving the
story along at a smooth pace.  So we get these long, rich chapters about
Tremaine, in which exciting stuff happens, long, interesting chapters about
Karal, and long 'I wanna slap the boy' chapters about Firesong.  Not a
whole lot of stuff happens in the Firesong and Karal chapters except for
court intrigue and the ending--that's the way it seems to me; others'
opinions will surely differ.  :)  Anyway, I like the new meditative tone to
her books, but sometimes I wish she'd get the plot moving a little faster,
and maintain the pace.

BTW, is Lackey ever going to write a book about what happened when Talia
went to Karse?  I think she vaguely explained some of it in one of her
recent books, but we were never really <there>.  That's one story in
particular that I'd prefer to experience <with> Talia, rather than be told
it the way I'd hear it from a bard.

 Hold off on the applications for the guild for a couple days, I need some
time to get myself organized, finish finals (crazy high school, thinks finals
for fall semester should be in January), etc.  If you've already sent one in,
I'll hold it until I have time.  Probably won't be until at least Saturday
(for anyone east of CA, that should read "Sunday").

I wouldn't feel too lucky.  Here I am, in Southern California, along the
coast, where I never see any snow.  It's been an unusually wet year this year
(we've had 10 inches of rain rather than the usual 3), but I can't complain.
 The temperature never drops below freezing, nor rises above 90 (that's F).
So we get a little fog in the summer, and a little rain in the winter.  For
anyone in college complaining about the weather, we've even got good local
colleges (the one in my town being known as "UCSB" and you can actually see
the ocean from campus).

I'm not terribly sure it was a joke.  I *think* what she meant was that it
didn't take him terribly (this is getting repetitive) long to pack.  If it
took him a long time, he wouldn't like it if someone decided they weren't
going to leave at the sceduled time.  It would ruin his whole day to have to
UNPACK something to wear just to REPACK it again the next day.
Of course, my interpretation could be completely wrong.

Another thing that's been bugging me (all day) about LHM is the back of
MPawn.  At least on my copy (pbk), the bag has this completely fictitious
accounting of what takes place in the book.  Truthfully, I think someone who
quickly skimmed it wrote the spiel, then two editors who hadn't read it
changed it and didn't check back with the original spiel-writer.  And then
I'm still not sure how they managed to get something so entirely wrong.  The
only thing right about it is the names of the characters.

 I am once again new to this list (as in, was on for a time but got tired
of all the fighting going on, so unsubbed for a bit), and thought I'd
say, well, hello again. I didn't do too well of an introduction the
*first* time around, so here goes:

  Hi, I am Erika, mostly known as Ahri, and a great fan of Mercedes
Lackey's writing. I was introduced to her works by a  friend who is soon
to be on this list(we're hoping!). She lent me the Last Herald Mage
trilogy, which I soon went out and bought. So far I've read everything
but Oathbreakers and the Gryphon series. I live right now in South Bend
Indiana, will soon resume my schooling, have two dogs, many books, and a
semblance of a life. :) I hope things have toned down a bit on here, and
that I can finally add something worthwhile to conversations(now that
I've read more Misty books). That's about all for now. Bye!
