There is also the problem that one thing about a country might be absolutely fabulous, but then there are things that make it a hideous place to be. Every country has something like this, it just depends which something you want more of. Like Saudi may have the lowest crime rate, but there's a lot of abuse deemed as OK. In America, we have a high crime rate, but hey we got that freedom of speech and religion (1st Amendment comes in handy). To each his own. As for that kid in Singapore. My late grandfather advocated castration but included pre-frontal lobotomies. He said that rapists and molester's were sick in the mind, and if deprived pf their own equipment, they would resort to using corn-cobs, sticks, fire-pokers -- you get the idea. He said with a pre-frontal lobotomiy, you could safely put them in chain gangs and make them earn their keep (what with the death penalty being expensive and all) On the other hand, maintaing X people of Umpteen years has to be expensive too. . . regardless, I think our legal system in the US needs a bit of re-doing and setting our priorties straight. After all, I can cite cases where a person who wrote a bad check, spent more time in jail and had higher bail, than a convicted rapist. Still just as good as the first time I saw it. Loved wwhat they did to the town. Thought the Jabba the Hut scene a bit contrived, tho. And I still cry when Obewan Kenobe dies. But, what bloopers did they edit out? I saw one they left in. Well, Ive been reading SoI. Ive been kind of skipping arounnd, reading what looks interesting. Some comments on what I've read: S P O I L E R S P A C E mMy favorite was In the Forest of Sorrows. Good plot , good ccharacters, Van acting just the way he ought to be. Which brings me to Chance, which , like most of you, I was disappointed in. The long intro didn't bother me, I thought it was interesting background. What did bother me was that it didn't seem like the Van i've always imagined. the one that always had to be drug into relationships by the heels. Or at least gently enticed. Sword of Ice was OK, but I was expecting more. Where was the plot? Or did I miss it somehow? We never even learn what happened to Starwind that burned him so. I liked Sunlancer--an iteresting inside view of life in Karse. A Song for no ones Mourning was weird. Lots of detailed description, thought the strange instrument was pretty cool, but left me feeling all weird and unsettled--maybe it was supposed to? I liked Blue Heart---maybe he found the butterfly whan it was almost dead? Its *possible*, anyway. The story never *says* he killed it---tho I guess you have to have it alive to mount it properly. Anyway, it was his Companion who had sent him chasing after it. On hatebonds: I've read in several fictional instances about two people who are bound by their hatred of each other throughout their karmic lives. I'm sure this happens in the mundane world. The fiction that tickled me to comment on this is DC Vertigo's _Witchcraft_ trilogy. It concerns a worshipper of the Fates and her violent death by rape and strangulation. At each turn of the Wheel, they return and meet again. The victim is even reincarnated as a man, Sir Richard Francis Burton once! Very good reading, IMO.
