The sound solidifies into a thunderous roar until suddenly . . . a herd of wild horses gallops from around the corner, kicking up a cloud of impenetrable dust enveloping he who spoke such blasphemy!!! He is definitely likable! (IMHO) Vanyel may not be the easisest person to live with, but then, neither am I. (ask Deniz whether this one is true. (Or maybe it is she who is hard to live with . . . I need to think on this one) Anyway, I've been putting it off for a while and just never got around to doing this earlier, but I would like to formally submit my petition for Lady-Knighthood to the Order of Amber and Marigold to forever uphold and protect the reputation of Vanyel Ashkevron. ------- F I R E R O S E Summerstar wrote: "Ive been wondering---In Fire Rose, why do the green room and red room make Rose feel uncomfortable, and the brown room doesn't? They seem to have a nice symbiotic relationship going on there, and Rose felt quite comfortable with Master Pao too. But, Ulf, if you're going to put *that* many exclamation points behind a statement, cough up your evidence My soon-to-be degree is in European history with a focus on women's issues and family life, and I'm not as convinced as you are that "parents always loved their children." Parents *today* don't always love their children, and we live in a culture with immense social pressure and encouragement to do so. I'm not picking on Ulf or anyone else, really. It's just that history's *greatest* misconception is that anything is "always" true of humans and their relationships. Anyone who tells you that thus-and-such has always been so because it's natural has probably not done their homework, so take those statements with a grain of salt. Heck, one of my current projects is on the one-sex model -- which was the idea, generally accepted in the ancient world, that there were not two sexes of humans (male and female) but one sex, males, and females were a "deviant" or "mutilated" type of male. So even the idea that humans have two sexes was not *always* considered true, and it seems pretty darn obvious by a modern (read, post-18th century) point of view. Earth | Fire---------Water | Air The elements on either side of the element in question would therefore be "friendly" (ie, work together and stuff), and the element directly opposite would be the "enemy" element (ie, the one that cancels the other out) Does that make any sense? Fire and Water can individually help both earth and Air, but they cannot work in tandem with each other. Master Pao and Rose can still be friends even if their magic is opposing, they just can't share magic/ help each other's magic. Does that make any sense? That's the way I understood it... As he idly turns aside the various attacks with insouciant skill and elegantly minimalist expenditures of magic, he wonders what the OAM hopes to accomplish. Perhaps they are under the impression that nuisance attacks on Vanyel's behalf will render his character more likable? =) Yet another question that arises is why the OAM has seen fit to attack the Mage, given that his post made it clear that Cennydd acknowledges Vanyel's many admirable qualities, while nevertheless recognizing that the redoubtable Herald-Mage is far from perfect (a fact that Vanyel himself, as well as those in his life who knew him well, was clearly cognizant of). Firemist wrote: > as soon as they find some . . . Do I sense a moment of doubt? =) > wait! 'talented fingers'!-Cen, didn't you something in the Bower about > talented fingers??? ) I think (although I am not sure) that the talented fingers belonged to Stefen. IIRC, the mention in the LHM was that bards had talented fingers. Then Ulf wrote: > Naw, Cennydd is just jealous that we all like Vanyel with the many > likeable traits. What is there to be jealous of? It is not as if the many friends that I have amoung the ranks of the OAM have decided that they are only capable of liking one person. If people choose to like Vanyel, how does that in any way diminish the amiable relations that may exist between them and me? Actually, I begin to suspect, based on the fact that the many of the Ladies/Champions/Divers Others of the Pink Wand are also members of the OAM, that there may be some correlation between liking Van and liking the Mage of Green Silences? > What is this with talented fingers ??? Please expand !!! As mentioned above, there is a reference in one of the LHM books about bards having "talented fingers" and the benefits thereof. All I can offer, by way of expansion, is that those of my friends and "friends" who have experienced my own version of talented hands (I will give a massage at the least suggestion of an opportunity) say that it is truly an experience that is in its own category. > And I also like 'Lendel. What is insanity anyways? I'm not sure if this last question was supposed to be rhetorical or not, but one definition of "insanity" could be "draining your life-bonded almost to the point of death so that you can gate into a private party and release a pack of wyrsa to massacre the innocent guests." =) Okay, enough of the fluff (although the above was not so fluffy as I feared it might be). On to the ObMisty: People have been discussing the issue of why a newly awakened talent should be able to penetrate the shields of older established talents. Do you think that it has anything to do with the fact that there are no controls on the newly awakened talent? The shields that Savil and others have might be specifically designed to keep out a trained mind, but would be ineffective against an untrained gift that acts in random, unpredictable ways. Think of it like energy waves. The shields are harmonized to disrupt and nullify the frequency of the energy from a trained mind. But any untrained mind may be randomly switching frequencies because the new talent has no control over their gift. This would mean that most of the time, the shield of a trained mind would be ineffective since it would be blocking the wrong frequencies. Anyway, it is a thought.
