I guess this means that I should at least be a worshipper of the Diety of Procrastination, if I ever get around to worshipping, but I would like to be a part of the clergy of procrastination. Let's see, what do I have for a worthy tithe? hmm... A couple of lab reports that should be completed already, some studying that I'm way behind in, and many computer tasks (many listserv related), that never seem to get accomplished. I do have one major character flaw for a clergy member to the Diety of Procrastination, that is I'm always helping out others that have gotten themselves by falling to the temptation of the Diety of Procrastination. Hmm... Come to think of it, this could be a strong point. If people find it relatively easy to procrastinate and survive (even with some help in the survival part), they are more inclined to procrastinate in the future, thus assuring the Diety of Procrastination a large group of loyal followers, when they remember to follow, of course. Well, I might as well mention something Misty related in this post, I believe that y'all call it an obMisty around here, right? Has anyone else noticed how many statements/concepts Misty mentions in her works that can be/are applicable in today's world? It's nice to have a fantasy author who has a social consciousness and who, through her works, tries to foster openmindedness in her readers by her works. My mind is short on thinking at them moment, but if I remember right, Morgan LLywelyn does something simmiar at times, right? And I agree with Eric on another point. I do find that a lot of the ideals that Misty puts into her realms useful. A lot of these ideals are very similar to my own. Y'all have read a couple of posts of mine but I've never truly introduced myself. I have been a Misty fan for a number of years and have brought many converts to the fold by the loaning of a single book... I love watching my friends faces as they progress through the first, then the second, then the third book. I even have one friend that is constantly scouring the countryside for new books and short stories. I'm a single parent with a 4 year old daughter. I spend my working time on the phone for one of those "psychic networks". I read tarot cards for a living and wrinkle my nose at the "psychic" labeling. I can't read minds... but have been quite sucessful at reading my cards. If there is a Goddess of Tarot or fortune telling... I guess I would apply for the post of acolyte. *shrug* We've had several threads on the way Misty portrays children's lives. In one of my previous posts, I gave all of you a peek into my own childhood. It is interesting that I see real live situations in her descriptions of these children. And as someone (chocolate sheep to the one who's name I'm forgetting) stated... her books would be rather bland without these descriptions of life. I've been told by more than one "professional" that children who grow up in adversity develop "talents". The stronger the adversity, the stronger the "talent". However, sometimes the adversity/talent combination can break the mind and spirit. I wouldn't recommend going out and putting your kid through adversity just to see what latent talent they might hold! Hmmmmm.... Sorry for the length of this one... Rune! Call me Cindy... Not to be picky or critical or anything, but didn't Van himself admit to being whiny? And then Savil confirmed it. Somewhere in MPromise, I think. *sighs*...someday I'll have my books with me.... Publications (if any) I'm not sure what I'm trying to accomplish by this, I just want to know a little more about who I'm talking to. Not sure why. Someone was talking about perfectly ordinary characters. I have read one novel about a perfectly ordinary character. It was called _A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man_ or some such (can't remember those long titles). It was not a perfectly ordinary novel. In fact, it was one of the most difficult novels I've ever read. My point beint that if the main character were perfectly ordinary, why would anyone read the book or start a discussion list about it? Authors have to make a living somehow. ObMisty: Well, I know there's one somewhere. Here ObMisty, where are you, ObMisty? Maybe, I don't know, I could say something like... no, that's mean, and it's not a real ObMisty anyway. So I'll go back to Van's Bardic Gift. I think he has it. I don't think it ever got trained. You know, I never thought of that, but it would make sense! After all, *we* know that he has the Bardic Gift because, as readers, we are privy to Savil's private thoughts. But there is no indication AFAIK that she ever told Van that he had the Bardic Gift. It is possible that he never realized he had it, particularly if it were as minor as his healing talent. Even if it were not, the inference I made from Savil's sending Van to Bardic for testing (in MPawn) is that a bard may not be able to directly sense his or her own gift (Stefen's inability to ease his own pain with his talent substantiates this). So, if Van was operating on the assumption that he *didn't* have the gift (based on Breda's diagnosis), he might assume that any audience response he got was solely due to his technical skill (which was quite high). Thus, he would tell Medren that he didn't have the gift, because, AFAHK, it would be true. Kewl idea, Liseth. And for a few others on the list (you know who you are! *grin*), this is a classic case in point of the benefits of re-hashing old "done to death" topics with newcomers to the list. You never know when a new idea will crop up. Yey! =) We still need a FAQ, of course, but even a FAQ shouldn't mean that a topic is closed.
