Message-ID: <199702122053.UAA07105-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> I do apologise to any of you who received the 400K+ executable which Mistweaver saw fit to send to the list. I think I caught the majority of them before they left here (I did wonder what the hell was going on when Vanyel started grinding ....) Mistweaver has been removed from the list. Anyone who sends 400K+ to rather more than 300 people has exceeded the allowable cock-up threshold by a factor of several hundred (especially since it caused me to have to stay here for an additional half hour clearing up the mess; had I not still been in the office, the additional load would have rendered my machine unusable for a considerable period of time. That is unacceptable, since its main purpose is to serve my business and its clients. I'm pretty sure you didn't, judging to your reaction the time I thought I had a super duper ObMisty. Still... here's my problem with this theory. Vanyel is an amazingly strong Adept with many gifts, right? It was a rhetorical question. Anyway, if he had a gift that he was not aware of, wouldn't it be a *serious* weak point in his shielding? I mean, for one thing, it could go rogue, with his mage energy to be a pool for it, and he would be offcenter, not completely grounded, if he was operating without knowing himself completely. Do you see what I mean? In order to work on any level, he has to know himself, every single little bit, and be sure of where every dreg of power is, should be, and what it's used for, and use this knowledge to know exactly where his limits are. If he's not aware of a gift, working at the levels he's working would be dangerous, and I don't see Savil letting *that* happen. So, that's why I've never been able to accept this theory, despite it's appeal. Mat again [on the book cover's thread): >I think you mean Ian's (who, IIRC, is off-list at the moment) page. I just wanted to clarify this point in case Mat wasn't clear enough. Do NOT place scanned images of the covers of Misty's book (i.e. another artist's copyrighted artwork) before getting permission from the publishers. And don't be bummed if you don't get the permission, they sit on that permission like it was the Alamo. You know, a lot of people have commented on the Tayledras' bias towards those with the Mage gift in oodles and bundles. I just wanted to point some things out. Remember in WFate, where the shaman dudes get to see the history tapestry? Remember how the Star-Eyed gave the mage power to the Hawkbrothers, and to go along with it, the responsibility to heal the land? When I read it, that gave me the impression that She would ensure that any Hawkbrother mages would be Adepts and able to use Heartstone power, and that they would be very more common than anywhere else in Velgarth, so that they would have the manpower to carry out their awesome responsibility. I think it's pretty understandable that they've gotten biased because of this Goddess-touched turn of events. Oh, and Mat? About this departmentalizing of responsibilities among Your Clergy... We need to talk. Sigh. Did I say I'd get FireRose stuff? The people with the bardic gift go through all kinds of training to make their gift "presentable" to the population before they become bards. I might have a talent for singing or drawing, but without the proper training I'd just be a talented amateur. Look at Steph or a lot of others. There IS a Bardic Collegium y'know to train people. Van never got the training. The Queen and King and Savil and the Companions needed him to be a warrior. Van proabably was not really been suited to be a bard anyway; Too much the peacock, too used to the royals lifestyle and a bit uncomfortable, always, with the lower classes. Look at how he hated that little assignment he sent himself on when he was pretending to be an out of work entertainer. "Kind of funny, he thought, stretching carefully over a puddle of stale urine. I did wonder what the h*** was going on when I got a 3-part post full of garbage! Herald Vanyel faced the Singer who had sung them(the Shadows) into life And she sang to him of grief and loss..... .....Herald Vanyel raised his golden voice and sang of life and light.... .....It was than she tried to flee him, but his song and magic spell Struck her down........ Now it is possible, Bards being what they are, that this is all a grand metaphor for a mage battle, but I have read it as mainly a Bardic battle. The Singer has A Bardic gift which she has turned to evil, using it to create Shadows which took away peoples will to fight. As for his likeability...it's hard for me to say anything here because my boyfriend is SO much like him it's scary. So let me just say that he IS impossible to live with, but once you get through that outer barrier, there is so much to love. That's how I saw Vanyel :) love n light Lady Ambyrle ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 15:32:38 GMT From: Ailsa Reid To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: wind lords Message-ID: <199702131532.PAA19834-+AT+-brookes.ac.uk> Just something thats been nagging at me for a while. I think its somewhere in LHM, the Wind Lords are mentioned, and I'm pretty sure it was in connection with Iftel. Yes I know whats really inside there, and it's puzzling me. Thing is, I can't find half my books due to a clear-up round Xmas. Any suggestions as to where this mention is will be gladly accepted :> Ailsa the alien ____________________________________________________________________________ | Ailsa Reid areid-+AT+-brookes.ac.uk | | | | A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 09:47:44 -0600 From: "Cindy Meeks" To: Subject: Re: newbies Message-ID: <199702131547.JAA23693-+AT+-smtp.gte.net> > > On Thu, 13 Feb 1997, miyako hirao wrote: > > > > > Okay, who did I miss while I was gone -- a whole slew of newbies, or is it > > > just one I see right now... An introductory paragraph about yourself is fine, but several screens ... well ... I'd rather you didn't. (If anyone's wondering why they've not had a digest for a few hours longer than usual, by the way, it's 'cause the file which keeps track of when they should go out got reset in yesterday's little ... uhm ... problem. Should get one normally in another hour or two, I think.) Message-ID: <219EBA6304-+AT+-mdep.iupui.edu> Bright greetings, listsibs! I feel like a newbie all over again, it's been so long since I've posted! I went on vacation and never managed to get caught up. I just *couldn't* delete the messages that accumulated , but I didn't have the time to read them, either. (I finally put them in a separate folder, in the hopes that *one of these days*, I'll manage to read them.) Since then, I've just been trying to stay caught up. Hopefully, I'll even manage to post! Since so many new people joined, I'll do a brief intro. My name is Tammy Harris and I live in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the US. I work in a medical research lab. I've been reading Misty for about five years, and I've been on the list for almost a year and a half. (And yeah, I'm the one who started the Ladies and Champions in Green, way back when.) Btw, the server at work changed, so on top of everything, I have a new e-mail address. It's too late to comment on all the threads I missed while I was gone, but it seems like a lot of people had to deal with illnesses and/or death over the holidays. I just want to offer my deepest sympathies to you all. If you need someone to listen, feel free to drop me a line. On topic: Van's Bardic Gift Deniz said that she can't accept the theory that Van didn't know about his Bardic Gift, because in the process of his magery, he needed to know himself and his powers completely. Dana/Fast Fashion responded that he never got bardic training. While that's true, as Deniz said, he should have known he had the Gift, even if untrained. And the Heralds never leave a resource untapped, so although Van couldn't have become a full-time bard, it's an ability that could have benefited him on occasion. When Van posed as the minstrel, I seem to recall him *choosing* to go as a minstrel rather than as a bard. (I could be wrong, though--I have a memory like a rusty sieve!!) I liked Liseth's idea when I read it, but Deniz's objections make a lot of sense to me as well. So I dunno'. May your path be bright this day, Tammy "It's time to ask yourself what you believe" ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1097 **********************************
