Message-ID: <4840BE820C5-+AT+-cottey.edu> Raidah, Hello!! I am relatively new too!! I also loved the "Last Herald Mage" Series!! That was the series that got me so hooked on Misty. I have not read all of her books and there are a lot of her first ones I haven't read, such as Arrows of the Queen and the rest of that series but I a slowly working on it. I find it hard to find time for leisure reading because I am in college and I have class books to read. But I have a break right now and i am reading " Storm Rising". ======================================================== EVERYONE, Has anyone seen the movie Farinelli?? I find that Farinelli reminds me alot of Vanyel. Am I the only one who has seen that movie that thinks so?? As my red-headed and very hot tempered mother would say, "They're all so dammed controlled". She used to get incandescent with my Dad, who was one of the most even tempered, easy going people on this earth, often because he wouldn't give her a real row! They can then swat with impunity! Oh, and wouldn't you think, given that we now all know that companions are reincarnated humans, that once dead and hanging around in spirit form, they'd ditch the horsey shape and revert to the original? Don't we get hints of Kris's, or maybe Ylsa's Companion lurking white, ghostly and hoss shaped after death? I think he wrote the original story... parody on fantasy > books, etc. > nope. there REALLY IS the book by S. Morgenstern :) In the version of The Princess Bride that William Golding wrote, he talks about how his father read it to him when he was young and only read the good parts (what the movie is based on). He also has chapters that are purely commentary on the stuff he is leaving out. At the end of the book, he describes the ending S. Morgenstern had created, and how it completely disillusioned him (William Golding). Also, in the chapter where Buttercup and Westley are re-united, Golding states that his wife thought he should leave it out since it was a "private moment" but he invites the reader to write him for a copy of the scene...which I did :) Apparently he got into trouble with the Estate of S. Morgenstern for that. There's four pages of his absolutely hilarious retelling of the legal crap he had to go through, and all this stuff (wish I could remember more). Anyway, it's definitely out there :) I think I actually looked it up at one point, and considered reading it, but it was checked out or something...can't really rememebr :) ObMisty: Does anyone know whether or not Stefen was indeed a reincarnation of Tylendel? As a matter of fact, in WoF, Stef refers to the time at the Waystation where Kris & Talia are digging out. He says something about Yfandes nearly swatting Talia when she nearly lost control outside the Waystation. I don't think the vrondi had anything to do with Talia's problem with her shields. She and Kris felt that the Forest itself was watching them, and was very upset that Talia, a Herald, was a danger to Kris, another Herald. > Empathy yes, but mind Healing? IIRC, Talia was never a mind Healer. > True, she worked with Healers for a while at their Collegium, but she > never had the Healing gift. Talia was the only MindHealer who happened to be a Herald. As a matter of fact, the fact of her being a MindHealer is mentioned at the beginning of Arrow's Flight. She is talking to someone about how the only other MindHealer is strictly a Healer and won't be able to help any Heralds with problems as much as Talia could. > The catalysts were the mushrooms and the rumors. I was thinking that maybe there's a difference between a blocked channel and one that simply hasn't opened yet. While time and ordinary stresses of childhood and adolescence can cause a channel to open, it takes a blast of energy to remove a block. So Van would have figured that Jisa wouldn't develop the Mage Gift unless something blasted her Mage channel open. Make any sense? *********** The lovely Esmerelda wrote: > > It was one of the few displays of raw emotion (apart from the > > great displays of weeping ML is so fond of) in the books. I agree with you, Esme, her characters are way too controlled. I knew there were a few good outbursts somewhere, but it's taken me a while to come up with them. In AFall, there's the fight between Talia and Elspeth. They say mean and nasty things to each other after T interrupts E's little tryst. Then, of course, we get the guilt scenes to go along with it. And we have the fight between Dirk and Kris. In MPromise, there's a scene in which Van confronts his father, and says why won't you believe I'm not a pervert, I don't molest little boys, etc. And ends with, why can't you accept me, I just want you to love me (very badly paraphrased, I know). I was rereading that scene the other day (looking for something on Van's bardic gift), and it rang really true, at least to me. The stuff between Elspeth and Skif in Winds comes to mind, too. I know a lot of you really don't like the way she treated him on their journey, but I'm not so sure I agree. He kept after her, following her around like a lovesick puppy , and wouldn't take 'no' for an answer. I thought her anger/irritation was valid. (Frankly, it was his infatuation that I didn't like--it didn't make any sense to me! He was an experienced man with at least several women in his past. I just couldn't see it happening.) Anyway, she got pretty irate when she told him to stop coddling her, as I recall. Our beloved EE also wrote: ah, the whatsit > from Storm 1, the one who flips at Andy-doodah - oh grief, why do I > bother? The one who accuses our young hero of being a Karse spy, or > something. I hate to contradict you Jag, but Whasis-face / Andy-doodah is the Shin'a'in embassador, whose name is something like Jaichim. *********** Still Ezzie: Tcha, silliness! Some of us are even quite nice ........ > adults with > responsibilities, (AWR, pat. pending) - shock horror! Woo-Woo! What she said! ********** Talia's gifts I think people are starting to confuse two separate incidents. In AFlight, Talia is on her internship circuit with Kris. Her shields are built by intuition and have no foundation. Her worries over the rumors as well as Kris's doubts send her emotions spiraling, and eventually, when they're snowed in at the waystation, her shields disintegrate completely. In AFall, on the mission into Hardorn, Talia inadvertantly eats some goatsfoot mushroom, and it causes her gift to fluctuate--one minute it doesn't work, then it suddenly comes back, stronger than normal. She ends up not using it at all, shielding as tightly as possible. I hope this is helpful. ***************** Cenny wrote: > Anyway, I hope that I haven't intimidated anyone (I prefer to save that > for later *evil mad-scientist laugh*). ^^^^^^^^^ And just *what* are you trying to imply??? Message-ID: <199702191638.LAA06116-+AT+-sasquatch.crosslink.net> Don't read this message if you haven't figured out the "true nature" of Companions yet! Esmeralda, on Feb you wrote, >So, the companions don't interfere when they're alive, but dead? They can then >swat with impunity! Well...I think 'Fandes was a special case. At the end of MPrice, Vanyel says to Stefan, ":I had a choice. Most Heralds have a couple of choices; they can go on to the Havens, or come back, like the Tayledras say people come back -- I was given another option.... ...The problem is that I was the *last* Herald-Mage. Valdemar needs a gurdian on this Border, a magical one... So -- that was my choice, to stay and guard. Yfandes and I are part of the Forest now..." The two (later three) of them were unique. IMO, 'Fandes wasn't really a Companion anymore. >Oh, and wouldn't you think, given that we now all know that companions are >reincarnated humans, that once dead and hanging around in spirit form, they'd >ditch the horsey shape and revert to the original? Don't we get hints of >Kris's, or maybe Ylsa's Companion lurking white, ghostly and hoss shaped after >death? I think I'd be back to two legs and hands asap. I think it was Ylsa's Companion, when Ylsa's spirit comes to bid Talia goodbye and ease her memory of Ylsa's death. It would make sense for Ylsa's Companion to hold that "horse" shape, though, since at that point the Companions are doing everything possible (including mental manipulation) to keep the Heralds from guessing the Companions' true nature. ***Storm Breaking spoiler**** However, there are also hints that the Companions do revert to "human" form as spirits, at least if those who are seeing them are not Heralds or people of Valdemar. At the end of SBreaking, Karal and An'desha walk the Moonpaths (in Karal's sleep) after the group at Urtho's Tower trigger the "weapon" that counters the final Wave. They see Florian as the young man he must once have been. I also seem to recall that somewhere (in either the Mage Storm or the Winds trilogy) someone saw Yfandes' spirit "curiously" doubled, as both a dark-haired, graceful woman and a Companion spirit. Unfortunately, I don't have time to track down the reference (I've got a hungry toddler to feed.) Anyone remember where it is? It's going to drive me nuts until I track it down. *****end of spoiler**** BTW, Esmeralda, how do you like the Fionnavar Tapestry so far? I loved it and hated it both...you'll probably see why when you finish it. Let me know (privately) what you think when you've finished it. Oh -- and I guess as a newbie, I should introduce myself. I'm another of those mid-thirties "Adults with Responsibilities". I was a teacher until the school closed (lack of funds); now I'm embarking on a freelance career as an indexer. And I'm curious -- how many of you fellow AwRs have children? (Feel free to respond to me privately, as I'm aware that's not really a Misty question.) One more question! (I know this is rather disjointed, but I'm writing it in intervals snatched from playing with my daughter...) Are there any protocols, etc., in creating a persona/using a "fake name" for the list? I'm aware that there are certain protocols regarding deification and membership in certain orders, such as the OAM, but what about calling oneself a Bard, Mage, Herald, etc.? I'd appreciate any pointers; I don't want to make any bloomers. There are a lot of other newbies on the list right now who might like to have the same information. Thanks!
