Later on we found out that Heralds often *chose* to come back as Companions (like Sayvil Kero's companiom) after they died, some even choose to come back a third time as Heralds being reborn and chosen again (such as Florian). To: Subject: OAM/Princess Bride/gods Message-ID: <19FEB97.15688858.0028.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> Sorry, sorry those of you awaiting confirmation into the OAM. You're in, you're all in, anyone who fits the bill, just declare yourself a Knight/Dame and go for it. The only caveat: did I see someone wanting to be a Duchess of the OAM? I don't think that's kosher; that's landed nobility, and it sort of puts you up on a different level from the rest of the Order. Knights and Dames only, please. Take your pick. Jaguar, you give up so easily! You were right; there is *no* book called *Princess Bride* by S. Morgenstern, and I don't think there's an author named S. Morgenstern (if there is, he/she is unrelated). *The Princess Bride* is by William Golding (best known as a screenwriter -- for example, he wrote *Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid*), and he made it all up, including the fictitous Morgenstern and his text. I'm not quite sure how to prove this (how do you prove that something doesn't exist?), but I solemnly swear it's true. I don't know what the other person (Kara?) found, but it wasn't what she thought it was. Here's an alternate viewpoint on the relative weakness of Valdemar's gods. I think they're "stronger" and more active than any other gods on Velgarth (except possibly Vkandis in Iftel). They run the government, after all, and that's pretty hands-on. First of all, they choose the Companions and the Heralds. Since Companions are just folks, how would they know whom to Choose unless they were being guided/directed by a being(s) with a greater overall knowledge? More kids are Chosen a few years before big disasters, etc, implying that there's a greater scheme of things and someone knows the score. We can assume, I think, that the gods are the beings in question. So they directly and specifically pick out the people who will be judges and police (crucial to a society), not to mention the people who will or won't become Monarchs. But what if the people that Valdemar's gods choose don't end up doing quite what Valdemar's gods wanted? No problem! We have a solution for that, too. The Companions are the gods' mouthpiece, the means by which Heralds get their otherworldly guidance; that's why Heralds trust their Companions' judgement much more than they trust their own. And if the humans are preparing to hare off and do something they shouldn't? Well, their Companions pull rank and insist, and how are the Heralds really going to resist that? Remember, for example, the brouhaha surrounding Jisa's wedding in MPrice. The Heralds are always saying that if the Companions think it's a good idea, then it must be. And if the Companions get their special knowledge from the gods, then it's the gods who are making damn sure that things get done their way in Valdemar. I think it's safe to say that nothing has *ever* happened in the hallowed halls of Valdemaran government that the gods didn't approve. Even the one time a Herald ignored her Companion (Elspeth & Gwena), I think the gods let her do it because it was a decent idea. They just didn't tell Gwena, so that Elspeth could feel good about being all grown up and self-motivated. If it had *really* been a dangerous thing for Elspeth to do, I think she would've found her memory neatly swiped of the idea and been trotted docilely off to the Shin'a'in, or wherever she was going. Hell, Rolan wiped Talia's memory at Gwena's birth for much less cause than one of major national security. As far as I can tell, he/the Companions/the gods just didn't want a bunch of awkward questions being asked about Elspeth's destiny. Frankly, the Valdemaran gods seem chillingly powerful to me, perhaps even more so because they don't appear in person and offer explanations the way Kal'enel does. (BTW, not only does Astera sound like the Latin word for star, she was called "Astera of the Stars": another link or similarity to the Star-Eyed.) They're sure a lot more powerful/involved than the gods that poor Hardorn and Rethwellan got stuck with; those countries are always getting screwed over by their government, and no one seems to worry much about it. Odd how much those borders on the map seem to mean to the gods. "Tyrant in Valdemar? Never fear, he won't be Chosen so he'll never rule. Tyrant in Hardorn? Pity. Well, if he picks on the Princess of Valdemar, we'll form a committe, write a mission statement, see what we can do." I just reread Fire Rose and I noticed a thing that bothers me. It is about a major plot element that I think got confused. One of the major plot-lines is the fact that Beltaire does not know exactly what Jason's research is showing him. Even Paul du Mond does not know this but there is a way that Beltaire should know: The salamanders should be able to tell him. I have this textevd. from the Prologue: "At time a manikin of light, at times in the shape of the mundane salamander that bore the same name, this was the eyes and ears of the mage who had conjured it. He was a Firemaster, and all creatures of the element of flame answered to him. What one saw, all saw; speak to one and you spoke to all of them, for such was their nature." I think that Misty "forgot" this description of the salamanders later. What do You think? (I do hope that this hasn't been done to death while I wasn't looking. Do you think that lifebonds are possible?? I mean, real life two people being bound together far beyond love...? I know that many people who are familiar with the concept of lifebond like to think that their relationship is actually a lifebond... but, is it? I'm involved in the most perfect relationship of my life, with the person I truly think I was meant to be with; I really and truly feel that we are soulmates, best friends, lovers... but, lifebonded?? I just don't know... so, I ask this circle because I've read some incredibly intuitive messages on various subjects, and thought that someone out there may have a bit more insight on this. And, does anyone know where Misty really described what a lifebond is.. I think I know, but would like other opinions, just in case I've missed a reference... looking forward to any replies... I would like to think that they can and that I have one...I may be young and people tell me to not get attachted, but I already know I don't have to look any further and the best part is I didn't have to look for him in the first place-we sort of fell together; no to use any cliches, but in truth it was like a Talia-Dirk thing...anyway; we seem to know what the other needs and stuff like that and it's not just because we know each other...ie. I am in College and am 2 hrs away from him, but every time I get extremly stressed my phone is ringing and he wants to know if I'm ok...coincidence, I'd like to think not. I get so tired of reading about PERFECT heroes and heroines. You know the type, perfect body, really smart, gorgeous, always does the right thing at just the right time.... In CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT, I kept wanting to whack Dave upside the head for all kinds of things, using drugs, taking those strange unknown drugs at the party, wimping out when he should have stood up to his fellow band members, yet I also loved it, because he really grew and changed, and he had false starts and overestimated himself a lot. Just like most of the people I know, although as far as I know, none of them are psychic vampires. And Diana Tregarde also had her problems. Having suffered a major anxiety attack last year from unknown causes (it took me two weeks to physically recover from the debillitation that caused), I could really empathize with her reaction to bad psychic things happening. And she made mistakes, and learned from them too. Of course the good guys won in the end, but I like the fact that in Misty's books, all happy endings come with a price. Kind of like life, when you think about it. My husband borrowed FIREROSE again and I wanted to read it tonight... darn! I'm hoping to get to the library again tomorrow night to borrow Arrows of the Queen and the Mage books. I've only read CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT, and FIREROSE so far of her books, as well as THE SHIP WHO SEARCHED with Anne McCaffrey. So I'm really enjoying the commentary about the books I haven't read yet. You've all managed to whet my appetite without ruining the stories I haven't read yet. I just hope the library has the books. I live in a small town of about 6000 people (if you count the township too!) and the library is one of the original CARNEGIE libraries that were built in the middle of this century. Cheers to all! Kerellsen P.S. Is there a diety in charge of late library books? Or would that be an extension of the Goddess of Procrastination? Either way, I'd like to be an acolyte of the appropriate diety. It never fails that when I go to return books to the library, at least one is missing from the shelf I keep them on, and it takes months to find it sometimes... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Feb 1997 16:09:03 -1000 (HST) From: Asphodel To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: lifebonds... a query Message-ID: On Thu, 20 Feb 1997 cjkocher-+AT+-spectra.net wrote: > Hi all.. here's a though for everyone that has been running around in my > head for a while.. it's on the subject of lifebonds... > > Do you think that lifebonds are possible?? It's sorta like empathy (remember Van telling Stefen that he should be able to feel it because Bardic Gift was close to Empathy). According to Stefen, the lifebond is formed between two people on opposite extremes, i.e. one who tends to lose him/herself and needs someone to anchor him/her to the world. Stefen also said (in WoF) that the lifebond is usually, but not always, cemented by love. So the lifebond does not equal love. It's just a link between two people, and they share the same thoughts and emotions so that if one of the lifebond is miserable, the other will be too. I wish the lifebond existed in this world, but I don't think it does (not in the form that Misty describes it anyways). We have to work really hard to communicate to each other, even if we loved each other very much. We don't have the convenience that the lifebond provides in terms of communication. Also, as I understand it, the lifebond is life-long, but we in this world must work hard to keep our love alive and keep it from getting stagnant.
