Something else was said about Talia and her being poked by 'fandes. Well again IIRC at that time the Heralds and Talia didn't know that Van, Stef, and 'fandes were hanging around Sorrows. And correct me if I'm wrong but they thought or didn't know about Vrondi so she and Kris thought that the pokes were ghosts or something. All right another thing with Talia(what's with Talia) About her gifts and Ancar. The first time was the Goatsfoot which blocked her gifts and IIRC did not disable her shields. The second time in Arrows Fall it was Hudla or another mage shielding the room she was in bet neither her gifts or shields were disabled. Well, if he > picks on the Princess of Valdemar, we'll form a committe, write a > mission statement, see what we can do." Yeup. What She Said. But then, I'm cynical too. Let me paint the situation in the light I see it. We have some quite powerful beings, at least two, who though quite powerful are neither omnipotent nor omnisescient. (And neither am I obviously, you've only to look at my spelling). And yet, these beings divvy up the geography into countries, and institute differing government systems, with varying religious institutions and various degrees of interference from the beings. And they keep them from cross pollinating to a very large degree. Can we spell Political Science Experiment? You can see the mission statement can't you: Valdemar: - Degree of Religious intervention in Government. Low. - Style of Government. Hereditary Monarchy. Highly ritualized/organized. - Degree of Deity interference. High. - Visibility of Deities. Low. Tayledras: - Degree of Religious intervention in Govt. Minimal. - Style of Govt. Anarchistic. Authority through personal power. - Degree of Deity interf. Med. - Visibility of Deities. Med. Shin'a'in: - Degree of Religious intervention. Med-High. - Style. - Degree of Deity interf. Med-High. - Visibility of Deities. Med-High. I mean, you can go on for each culture that we suspect Vkandis and Kalanel have under their wing. You might even point out that Evil Mage Guy Reincarnation (tm) have been thrown, once, at each culture. You might suggest that it's in the nature of a test. And then you might go looking to figure out which cultures are the control groups, and exactly -what- the Deities are trying to figure out. (Object: "To determine the optimal social organizational model for this species, with respect to the parameters of government, religion and deity interference; and it's responsiveness to various internal and external threats, both natural and artificial.") And you might notice that the major times the Deities interfere, is where the cultures threaten to overwhelm each other, or interact in a way that seems inappropriate. Do Deities do PhD or Honours theses? Chilling? Not if you assume I'm kidding. Wish I was. (And of course the Deities get attached to their cultures. Scientists think monkeys are cute too). I have a couple of comments. *****Princess Bride***** There is no "unabridged version" of The Princess Bride; William Goldman made that up. Back when the movie came out, I read a newspaper article about it. I believe it said, iirc, his two daughters each wanted him to write a book for her; one wanted a book about a princess, and one wanted a book about a bride. In the spirit of familial harmony, he wrote The Princess Bride. The framing story about the "good-parts version" is just that -- part of the fictional story. In the book, he kept talking about editing the good-parts version for his son (I think his name was Jason) to read. But, in real life, I don't think he has a son, just the two daughters. Anyway, I read that article a LONG time ago, so I might very well be getting some of the details wrong, but not the one most relevant to this discussion -- Princess Bride is by William Goldman, not S. Morganstern. *****Mindhealing***** Yes, Talia is a mindhealer. I have textevd! AotQ, paperback, pg. 292: "If I haven't said so before, I appreciate your efforts. We don't have enough mind-Healers to care for the minor traumas; the two we've got have to be saved for the dangerously unbalanced. Now don't look innocent, I know _exactly_ what you've been doing! As far as I'm concerned, you can go right on doing it." --Devan to Talia, on her healing of Vostel, the burn victim. This passage definately implies that Talia is a mind-healer. And I'd like to know exactly what she's doing when she cures people of their phobias (like Skif in AFlight) and helps to heal survivor guilt and grief, if not mind- Healing? :) ********** Well, that's all I have to say for now. I'm probably going to go back into lurker mode after this; my schedule has really filled up recently. Busy, busy, busy... I'm a newbie and have finally decided to take my first plunge into this wonderful list. (It was getting awful lonely under my rock.) I am currently in the process of re-reading all of the Valdemar tales (something I do about every year and a half) and have come up with an interesting question (at least to me). Has anyone thought that Karal is going to end up being the next Son of the Sun? Here a few reasons why I ask this question. First, in Storm Warning, when Karal has been introduced to An'desha and is trying to help him overcome some of his fears, An'desha makes this observation: "After his own brush with the Avatars, he had become far more sensitive to those the shaman called 'god-touched'. There was something about this Karal- a color, or a sense of Light about him-that was a great deal like the feeling he had when the Avatars were near." Second, also in SW, when Karal is doing his part in setting up the breakwaters and crosses the barrier around Iftel: "Something seized and held him. ***what*** Priest?***ah***. Third, he's a channel. And wouldn't a God channel himself through one of his own? Can anyone see where I'm coming from? Karal has played very important roles in the Storm series. There is something special about this guy. He has a fire cat, an unchosen Companion has befriended him. This is driving me nuts!! I also have another idea numbing my brain. Everyone has been talking about Gods lately and I believe that they are all one. Remember how Karal found mention of the order of the priests of the Goddess Kalanel-the consort of Vkandis- in an old text and how her statue just "disappeared" from its place beside Vkandis' in the Temples? Anyone care to take these on? IMHO... I really don't think he'll be the next chosen Sun... without doing the research, I seem to remember someone telling Karal that he is a priest of the soul... something to that effect anyways... I do agree with you that he is important, but his appeal to me is that he is ordinary, simple... well, as ordinary as one can be with a Firecat as your friend. :) Firesong (or was it An'desha?? *sigh*) made the comment that others look at Karal, and see how he deals with everything that comes his way, and they take comfort from it. So, wouldn't his greatest gift be that of staying ordinary... being a priest to those in need, a friend, a partner... oh dear, I'm babbling now, aren't I? Did *any* of this make sense??? :) Oh well, that's what I get for thinking at 2:40 in the am... Crys ---------Christopher J. Kocher-------Crystal D. We've been through great times (my getting my first story published in a Star Wars Fanzine, him getting promoted to E-6 in the Air Force) and bad times (our second child being born with Cerebral Palsy and our firstborn getting mauled by a wolf-hybrid when she was three) and through it all he's ALWAYS been there. Even the times when I have to go out of the country to perform Naval Reserve Active Duty Training, he's always there in my mind, and he tells me its the same for him. After all this time, it seems like our bond is tighter and greater than we ever dreamed it could be when we had our wedding ceremony. I'm not saying that we read each other's mind or anything like that, but we seem to be on the same wavelength more often than not, and he always seems to know when I need to hear his voice when I have a bad day at the office. And, somehow I always seem to call him when he needs a lift too. A leader in my Church once said that when you truly love someone, when they cry, you taste the salt of their tears. I know that Steve and I have that kind of closeness and love... and if that isn't a lifebond -- an emotional commitment that spans beyond our time on this mortal frame, then I don't know what more a lifebond could be. I think it was just a case of bead timing and bad schedules. Talia had to be trained as the MO, and that meant extra drills to make sure she could survive another drowining attempt, plus the usual academic and combative lessons. Things didn't necessarily calm down once they decided to be just friends--we just didn't hear any more about their respective relationships until another book. Plus, I don't think the Valdemaren deities would meedle in such a trivial matter. They seem to go with the "freedom of choice" course of (in)action in the personal matters of the people and Heralds. So, in her situation, it didn't take a blast to > open it. I'd say that Sherril's Mindspeech wasn't blocked (despite what Ylsa thought), just unopened. For whatever reason, it hadn't opened during childhood, but required a stronger emotional stress. Also, I think that she may have been (unconsciously) preventing it from opening. Sherril came from a very close family, living in crowded conditions on a boat most of the time. I think she would need her privacy, especially for her thoughts. So she blocked her mindspeech in the same way that some people block out memories they don't want to deal with. It's blocked, but not in the same way that Jisa's Mage-Gift was. Oh, and ummm, Melissa, it was Keren who was lifebonded to Ylsa and knew what happened to her. (Talia sent for Sherril.) And it was Keren who was caught up in a maelstrom of pain from Ylsa's death. Her twin, Teren, was unable to bring her out of it--Sherril, with here newly awakened Mindspeech, finally succeeded. ================ Re: Fire Rose, Richard wrote: > " What one saw, all > saw; speak to one and you spoke to all of them, for such was their > nature." > > I think that Misty "forgot" this description of the salamanders > later. No real evidence, except maybe the passage you quoted about what An'desha sensed from Karal. And as Moonsight said, Karal would have a difficult time doing many of the things the Son needs to do. Well, there was a morality element - they weren't exactly panting for each other, it seemed to me it was a case of well, we might as well, I suppose. Maybe ML feels that sexual partners should have a little hunger, some desperate desire. There certainly wasn't much plot reason for it. Okay, what we got up there ......., yep, that'll do me dooie, Esmeralda AWR ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Feb 1997 10:53:10 -0500 (EST) From: Narilka1-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Karal Message-ID: <970220105310_-1072713412-+AT+-emout10.mail.aol.com> I agree, there 's a good possibility that Karal is preped as the next son of the sun...After all as far as we know from their history, only the Son of the Sun would have a Fire cat(I believe they mentioned it was because there where so few of them...) Also, only a Son of the Sun can become a Fire Cat, but I get the distinct feeling that when Karal passes on he will become a Fire cat as well...After all he is God touched... as Andesha pointed out... Also look at the similarities of Vkandis' female counter part..Her name is *Kalanel* doesn't it strike you that one of the Shin' a' in Goddess' aspcts is know as *Kalenel* (we know her better as the Stareyed), and her Goddes chosen, as the Kalenedral?...think about it for a minute... My theory as to the combination of Vans gifts when he died comes from the fact that he is able to tell friend from foe, he knows whats in their hearts and minds(where as reading minds and feelings could be unethical for a Herald, it may not be for a spirit of one, anyway, Vanyel was never one to be called *ethical*) And remember, the Vondri are always there, In WoFate, Need remarks about the unusual number of Vondri in Valdemar, because of the deal that Van made with them they are ever so vigilent....(remember they are not too smart..) Vaniel set them out ot look for Active Mage energy, that was not from a Herald(MPrice) and to seek out Herald Mages if they did finnd them...With no Herald mages left the Vondri only watched...(Mages in side the borders) and otherwise did not interfere unless they where called on for the Truth spell....
