Message-ID: <970226095640_509157051-+AT+-emout18.mail.aol.com> Another trekker here.... About lifebonds, and Misty's understanding og them, and the characters' understanding of them... It seems to me that we never really get the author's definition of lifebonding, except as filtered through the characters. So, might a lot of the trouble come from the imperfect understanding that the characters have of them? After all, most of these people haven't been one until they are in one... and feelings are slippery things to define. It may be that sometimes the lifebond is strained and not so clear, that the only thing shared is the bond, ( for example, they don't spring forth fully formed, nor do the bonds between the Companion and Herald for that matter, they have to work on them), for the time, and then at other times, under pressure or when everything is clicking well, the "focus" sharpens and each gets a glimpse into the other's soul/ mimind/heart/etc. .... And naturally enough, anyone who hasn't been in a lifebond would have even morte trouble defining or describing it to anyone else, since they would focus on the sharings they have witnessed or heard of. People do tend to focus on the unusual rather than the everyday.... But just like with ordinary communication, uncertainty and mixed signals can muddy the waters.... (no textevd, just musing........) On getting further into my email, I see that someone else has also addressed this, some of it, but I think I'll let my comments stand. I really think that Stefan's reincarnation was a compensation for all Van had gone through, and would go through to protect Valdemar... And maybe a chance to work out 'Lendel's screwed-up karma. He couldn't come back as a Companion because of what he had pulled, maybe, and yet, he could still do some good. R.A. Salvatore.... Read the Drizzt books, and am reading Sword of Bedwyr... will let you know, if you want, what I thnk. I don't think that evidence= ripping someone to shreds. I was sort of kidding because your arguement was so thorough. Actually, I'm rather glad you responded. I don't mind at all when someone disagrees with me. It makes you think. BTW, I love Misty's stuff (otherwise I wouldn't be on this list.), but the one thing that irritates me most about her writing is the inconsistency of facts. She does that "tell you one thing, show another"bit, there's the deal with Rose giving Jason the wrong medicine in FireRose, Van's gifts ('nuff said), etc. I'm sure there's something I missed. As a scifi/fantasy writer, this really bugs me. Telling the story is easy, but I probably spend twice that time making sure I'm consistent all the way through. Readers are intelligent people who notice things like "one day Van has bardic but no healing, a book later it's reversed." I think Misty forgets this on a regular basis. Sorry, I just can't see it. He's a good actor and he does do shy very well -- he should, he's had so much practice at it! -- but he is also absolutely gorgeous! Dirk is supposed to be ugly. (Well, if not *ugly*, then certainly homely.) Anyway, he's not a good-looking man. Hugh Grant is just too beautiful to play Dirk, IMO. Dirk's physical appearance is important to the character. A great part of his insecurity stems from it -- remember, when he was chosen, he thought his companion had come for one of his sisters instead because he was too ugly to be a herald! And whatshername -- the woman who used Dirk to get to Kris and then ripped Dirk to emotional shreds -- she couldn't have hurt Dirk so much with her insults (which, iirc, started with his appearance, and went from there) if some part of him didn't believe they were true. Anyway, I like Hugh Grant, and I wouldn't mind seeing him in the movie. I just don't think Dirk is the role for him. Maybe . . . hmmm . . . Darren and Selenay were instantly as well. The other didn't know as soon but it is believed that Talia lifebonded to Dirk the first time they met. So that is why the srong bond they had. I also like the Star Wars Movies and the books as well. I have one book by RA Salvatore but I con't remember the name of it. I think it was like the Crimson Cape or something like that. Being in College I don't have much time for pleasure reading but I want to get to it maybe this summer. Joan Fontaine is wonderful for Elspeth!!! She is beautiful yet in a plain and ordinary way. Which is the impression I got of Elspeth from the Mage Winds. That is wonderful casting for the Barrymores!!Though they are relatively small parts, they are very important parts and I find that Lionel and John would be just wonderful. Claude Rains would be perfect for falconsbane as well, and the voices are wonderful. I love Jimmy Stewart!! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 16:53:21 CST From: "CHRISTY GOLDBACH" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Who ya like!! About the silver griffon not being as good, well I guss everyone has their own oppinion on the subject but I liked it. I also thought the cast of "ancient" actors was a good idea. indulge a newbie but what is the *newbie fest*? one more question I promise! Does anyone happen to know if this world has a name that must have missed in my readings and rereadings? I've never found one and if there is one I would love to know what it is. Thanks a bunch Huggles and smoochums -NightFire ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 18:48:40 -0500 From: "John and Kara Pekar" To: Subject: casting/what do I read/lifebonds/ Message-ID: <199702262353.SAA19291-+AT+-nessie.crosslink.net> I wasn't going to get into this casting thread, but there are a few things I have to put in my 2 cents on... Lucy Lawless as Tarma: she does have the dangerous quality, but her other -- uh -- attributes are definitely *not* Tarma-like! Tarma is whipcord-slender. Because she's Kal'enedral, there is also a sexless quality to Tarma. I don't see being able to disguise Ms. Lawless's assets enough to convincingly portray that quality. Oh, and Shadowsong, Kerowyn wasn't Shin'a'in. She had Shin'a'in cousins through her grandmother, Kethry, but no Shin'a'in blood. Hugh Grant is all wrong for Dirk, but he'd be great for Kris -- dark hair, nice, very handsome, and he knows it. Most of the suggestions for Dirk have been too *old*. But how about Kelly McGillis for Kerowyn? She is an excellent and versatile actress, who does thoroughly competent, don't-mess-with-me very well. I am now o-u-t of the casting business; I think we've just about done it to death. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Laura, for additional reading (other than Lackey), try the following, unless you've already read them: Robin McKinley: _Beauty_ Raymond Feist's books, beginning with _Silverthorn_ (yes, everybody, I know it's the second/third in the trilogy, but I liked it better than _Magician_, which comes first.) MZBradley's Darkover novels; also _The Mists of Avalon_ Anne McCaffrey, esp. the Pern novels; my personal favorites are _Dragonsong_ and _Dragonsinger_ Diane Wynne Jones (I think that's her name): _Fire and Hemlock_, a really good, really neat modern retelling of the Tam Lin legend, unfortunately slightly marred by a confusing ending Diana Paxon (sp?): White Raven Patricia Kenneally-Morrison's books, beginning with _The Copper Crown_ (if you can swallow the initial, *highly* unlikely premise, the worlds are fascinating) Guy Gavriel Kaye's Fionnavar Tapestry (a trilogy drawing on mythology from literally all over the world, written in prose that rings like poetry) And, for really *fine* culture-crafting, Diane Duane's _My Enemy, My Ally_, _The Romulan Way_, and _Spock's World_ . _The Wounded Sky_ is fun, but don't bother with _Doctor's Orders_. And of course Tolkein, on the slim chance you haven't read him yet. Give me a few weeks, I'll probably think of some more. Oh, yes, I also like Eddings, though some people don't care for him. He has a dry humor I find appealing. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Heather (Hth): *Thank you*!! and a big plateful of brownies for giving the best explaination/description of a lifebond (and what it does & doesn't mean) that I have seen yet on this or any other forum. (For those of you who missed it, it was dated Feb. 24, 1997, and I'm not going to quote it due to length. It should end up in the archives.) I see on further reading that it sparked yet more debate, but my thanks stands: I think it was excellent. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I now add my plea to all the (other) newbies out there. **Please** read all your mail, write one single message, braid, and only quote the sentence or phrase you want to reply to. I use my email for business as well as fun, and I don't have time to wade through eight messages from the same person... Also, think hard about whether what you want to tell someone needs to go out to the whole list, or whether you could reply to one person only. There've been a lot of posts that just say, "Me, too!" or express the same opinion over and over. (Hint -- if you only want to reply to one person, don't use "Reply", which will send to the whole list. Type out the person's address instead.) Sorry to sound grouchy about this, but I gather I'm not the only one. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ObMisty: Which untold Velgarth story (or part of a story) would you most like to see ML write? Someone mentioned when Solaris meets Talia; I'd actually like to see a whole book on Solaris' life and "annointing" as the Son of the Sun, and her difficulties in ramming fairly radical changes (like an alliance with Valdemar) down Karsite throats. She fascinates me. I'd like to see how it *really* was when Baron Valdemar fled the Empire, established Haven, became King, conjured/prayed for the Companions, and so on. (We have the brief version, presumably based on the Heralds' Chronicles, at the beginning of several of the books, as well as Griffon's retelling in AotQ. But that's not the same as being there.) And I think Alberich's Choosing and flight into Valdemar warrants at least a short story. Wind to thy wings, Kara ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 20:05:09 -0500 From: mishi To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Helpful hints for Newbies Part 1 - oneliners/braiding/quoted text Message-ID: <3314DDC5.5C34-+AT+-mail.ptdprolog.net> This is going to be in TWO PARTS. I'm sending this to the list so that maybe things can be straighten out a little. This is important for all newbies to read. Warning you ahead of time here, if you don't at least try to follow these guidelines, you WILL get flamed. Just a friendly warning. I'm going to do the major thing first, so ya don't get bored and decide not to read the whole thing. 1) ONE LINE POSTS Lately we have been having a great deal of unncessary one-line posts. Actually, I'll say about 95% of all one line posts are unnecessary. If you only have one or two lines of reply to a post, try combining a couple of answers to a couple of posts together into one post. This is what we call braiding. It is not that hard to do with most mail systems. An example of this would be I recieved three posts in a row from the same person. In those three posts, two of which were on the same basic topic, there were a total of 54 QUOTED lines and 16 WORDS including the person's name typed as a reply. I recieved these three posts within 6 minutes of one another. There is no reason whatsoever to do this. These three things could have been braided together to form one post and some of the quoted lines cut out. When you are repling to a message you do not need to leave the person's sig in the quote, all you need to do is attribute what you quoted to them. I will explain attributes later in this post. That alone would have removed eight lines of QUOTED text. Since two of the posts were on the same basic subject alot of other text could have been removed. In all reality, these three posts could have been combined to form one post with at most EIGHT lines of QUOTED text and three lines of reply. In other words one post that takes up less space then one of the three orginal posts. Also if you wish to say a few things along the same subject you really should put that into one post. For example, I recieved I'll say six, even tho I'm sure it was more, posts in one day on the same topic which was who should be cast as characters if a Misty related movie was ever made. This definitely should have been put in one post. The topic was related and a lot of excess quoted material could have been removed. Braiding is not that hard. I use Netscape and Eudora Light. All I do to braid a message is use the cut, copy, and paste features of my browser. I highlight the text I wish to quote and either use the cut or copy feature to get that text. Then I place that quoted text where I wish it to by using the paste feature. If you don't understand this or have a different browser or system I will give you an e-amil address at the end of the SECOND PART that you will be able to get more information from. Also I one line post simply saying I agree or me too really isn't necessary. If you want to post that maybe say why you agree. The main reason why we ask everyone to do this is that there are many people on this list, that have to pay for every minute they are online. In other words, they do not have unlimited access. Getting 3 or 4 one line messages form one person in a row is very annoying to them. To be perfectly honest it is annoying to alot of people. 2)QUOTING TEXT The rule of thumb when you are quoting text is you should not quote more text then your reply would be. At times you will have more quoted text then reply but that might be necessary at times. I'm going to put an example or two here. This would be an example of too much quoted text - quoted part -My 2c to the lifebond thread I believe that life bonds do exist IRL, but not the same type as are in Velgarth. In Velgarth, Lifebonds seem to be part and parcel of magic and mind magic. They are a real thread, visible to mage-sight(Iwould think Tylendel would have to be able to see the link to force it open, anyway), and carries not only emotions but energy as well. Other bonds of this sort are, of course, Companion-Herald, and also twin bonds. And remember the "mothering channel" mentioned briefly in MPromise in regards to treesa and Yfandes? It was similar to foresight but warned only of danger to a mothers child. IRL, lifebonds are more on a spiritual level. They are two people who are not complete without the other, wwho complement each other, whose whole is more than the some of its parts. THey are linked, but it is a spiritul tie. I have two good friends who have this kind of relationship, and they swear they can read each other's minds. reply part (this is made up) -I agree that lifebonds do exist in the real world. I thikn that two people could have such a bond that would go that deep Now that same text but only showing the necessary text - I believe that life bonds do exist IRL, but not the same type as are in Velgarth.
