Hey all:

  All right, I have a few cents to add to the much discussed topic of
casting.

  Has anyone considered having an animated movie?  All right, I know it
sounds like kids stuff but the magic and the characters would be a lot more
like the book. Mage-Sight would be esier to show and the animals would be
alot more realistic.  Another thing is that you'd only have to cast for
voices. Just a thought.

Also, does anyone know whether gryphons have a cat tail or a bird tail?  Its
very confusing because I know somewhere it said that Aubri got his tail
feathers burned and all the pictures inside the book have the gryphons with
tail feathers, but on page 183 of  BGit says"Skan remained absolutely
motionless, except for the very end of his tail, which flopped like a dry
fish on land.  Like a cat, the end of his tail betrayed his mental state."
 This argues for a cat-like tail and so does the fact that when the book
describes Kechara it says that her wingtips drag on the ground but it doesn't
mention tail feathers in any way and they would drag on the ground too.  I'm
just thoroughly confused.

  On the gryphon topic--was anyone else reminded of a gryphon when they saw
Draco (Dragonheart) ? I don know why, but give him feathers n' fur, shorten
his wings and body just the teeniest bit and Ta-Da a gryphon. Oh well...
guess this confirms it...I'm certifiably nuts (and if you didn't think so
before you will now.  Guess what... <<whispers>> I didn't like Vanyel

6. PRIVATELY REPLY TO SOMEONE

     If you wish to reply to someone in private, you have to type in the 
ADDY you want to mail it to by hand. If you hit the reply button, the 
post will be sent to the misty list not the person you want to answer 
privately.

7. NEWBIE FEST 

     This is a helpful guide for newbies that will give you more 
information on certain things. Included in this are people you can 
contact to get help with braiding. I recomend that all newbies ask this 
to be sent to them. Again the addy will be at the end of this post.

8. VARIOUS

     A couple of other things you might want to consider are make sure 
people realize what you are talking about and also realize that this 
list is full of members from all over the world. If you talk about 
something that is currently in your country like everyone knows what you 
are talking about, you might get people confused. Just think before you 
send a post out.

9. PEOPLE TO CONTACT FOR HELP
     Newbie fest - contact Deniz by private e-amil at

include your e-mail so she can send it to you.

First question... what exactly does OBMisty stand for?? I'll read the 
newbiefest again, but just in case.... :)

As for what story I would like to see... more stories in the general 
timeline of Selenay's youth perhaps, or how Alberich defected to 
Valdemar and the story of his Choosing and perhaps his trainee-days; I 
have to admit that as much as I love all the Valdemar series, the 
Talia-trilogy holds a special place in my heart, and I think they always 
will. I think that my favorite characters would have to be from this 
series... and I've noticed that my feelings towards the characters have 
changed from one series to the next... I liked Elspeth when she was 
young, but in the MW series and beyond, I just found her so annoying. :) 
*shrug* I'm off on a tangent though, so I'll just shut my yap now. 

And, on the subject of one-liners... every morning the fiancee and I 
wake up to 25+ messages, with only 3 or four for him, and I get mournful 
looks and feel guilty and then I read these messages and maybe four, at 
most, are worthwhile. So, I'm adding my plea... either learn to send 
private email, or braid, or just save all your comments until you have 
alot to say. :) Or learn to babble like me, and then you can "pad" your 
comments with all sorts of useless stuff... (a skill I learned in 
college... and dammit! it still works!!)

Hmmm... interesting comment... but I think Misty's characters are just 
too "mature" to be properly depicted via animation. Even with 
Japanimation, which has some extremly adult themes, it's kinda hard to 
take seriously. I can't imagine the attempted murder of Talia coming 
through well with animation, or her trysts with Kris... also, IMHO, the 
Companions would look too "cute" and they should be majestic (like the 
unicorns in the movie "legend")...

I've always thought they had a mixture.... the actual tail would be ... 
muscular like a feline, but tufted with feathers at the end. And, in one 
of the illustrations in the MW books (I think) there are two silhouetted 
<SP?> gryphons which might give you a clearer idea... I'll see if I can 
find the exact reference and email it to you.

No, not really, but I thought Draco was great practice for the Pern 
dragons... now if they can only get the movie script righ for that

I always assumed they had a bird tail, mostly because of the references to
tail feathers, and Larry Dixon's pictures which I'd think Misty would have a
say in. I think the above comment was referring to the fact that its motion
betrayed his mental state. The only catlike thing about it was that it
moved, there is no mention that it is catlike in any other way.

Not necessarily. Remember that Kechara was a mutant of sorts. Parts of her
could be more out of proportion than others.

also, I tend to think the DragonHeart thing was closer to the Pernese
Dragons.... I actually got an email from Anne McCaffrey saying that they
just have to choose a script and the movie making will be in progress...

I disagree; I read comic, er, illustrated novels (yeah, whatever) such as
Gaiman's Sandman (dark and brooding, scary, suspensful, and definitely
"mature") and Moore's Strangers in Paradise (full of intense, tough,
beautiful people)
    ...and if that doesn't convince you that cartoons *can* be taken
seriously / can *force* you to take them seriously, there's Spiegelman's
_Maus_ and _Maus II_ (I'm reading the second one now, just started it this
evening), the story of a man trying to come to terms with his difficult
father, and the parallel story of his parents' lives as Polish Jews during
the Nazi occupation and prisoners at Auschwitz...  Spiegelman got a
Guggenheim fellowship and a nomination for the National Book Critics
Circle award.  If somebody can pull off a Holocaust story with all the
characters drawn as animals (mice for Jewish people), I think even Misty's
rape scenes can be done.

ObMisty...That's "obligatory Misty content"--used when one has written a
fluffy post and must have Misty content to justify posting it to the list
instead of privately.  Having several different orientation documents
(Auntie Mel's Rules of Thumb, the 5-Part FAQ, the Newbiefest, and the List
of Abbreviations are the ones that I can name) is a bit inefficient;
redundancy *and* things left out...  There is a FAQ-revision process in
the works; can somebody tell me, is it gonna have the information that's
currently in the Newbiefest, etc, so that all orientation material will be
consolidated?

There *is* an Alberich Choosing story, er, in _Horse Fantastic_?

I think Darkwind has great reason to brood, we just don't see it.  Sure,
we get told about it--"My doting father no longer cares and he's acting
like a tyrant!!"--but we don't get the kind of details that would make us
feel it.  Y'know how in WChange there's a mention that Starblade used to
wear clothes his son had designed for him, but after Moeslirpe
Flakesbreath ;) diddles his head, he throws 'em out in the pile of
scraps to be made into scouts' outfits?  *That* should have been mentioned
in WFury.  It, or some other anecdote like it, should have been in WFate
*before* we had to watch Darkwind brooding.

(Oh, and somebody said they didn't really like Van--I <donning Knight of
the OAM cap> say that's fine with me, as long as you respect him!)

I can't tell!!! On the cover, Skan has a cat tail, but in the Larry Dixon's
drawings show him with a bird tail. Personally, I like the bird tail better.
Otherwise, I think that it would be VERY hard for them to fly! In fact, they
might not be able to fly at all without a feathered tail. I could be wrong...

I'm sure that Storm Break is already out.  In fact there was a lot
(emphasis) of debates on it.  Most people seeme to agree that the ending
was week and a lot was left unsaid or open ended.  My recommendation:
don't buy the book but borrow it from the library or get it from a second
hand book store.  And thanx for the e-mail on Lammas night.  I was
beginning to think I was the only one who had enjoyed those short stories.
Whew!!  The stories were repetitive, but some of the others were really
original and enjoyable.  It was interesting to see what approach they
used.

1)We all love Trek (at least most of us) and B5 almost as much.  With
almost all the bad guys gone (aka Lord of the Rings and the Shire where
the Hobbits had to take the place back from the last of the bad guys)
won't B5 get boring?  Can B5 survive the exodus of the Shadows? Has Gol
Dukat bitten off more than he can chew with the Dominion in DS9?
2)Manga and the Vanyel saga:  I can't believe Japanamation, as much as I
love it, could do justice to this story.  A (grin) possibility:  Clones
of famous older actors with cyber implants where their brains should be
could be used to fill in for less talented younger modern actors.  If
cloning is real can other things be far behind?  Refs: The
Terminator/Cyteen by CJ Cherryh/Friday by Robert Heinlein 
3)Casting - I'm over it.
4)Fluff: Too much - too much mail!!!!!  sheesh! Warning Will Robinson,
danger, danger, email approaching!
5)Misty /Van: I haven't liked most of Misty's books as well as MP
series, but then I like boys too, and a gay hero is hard to find at
times.  I could love Van, because I love a challenge.  Going to pick up
the new books as soon as I find a job.  (see my resume on my home page) 
I love The Mage of Silence.  Urtho is great - more stories about him
please Misty!!!

   The books are "Sheepfarmer's Daughter", "Divided Allegence" and "Oath of Gold"
In Sheepfarmer's daugher Paksenarrion (Paks for short)  runs away from home
to join a mercenary company. If you liked The first part of Oathbreaker's you'll
like her time in the company. In the second book she leaves the company and 
travels around. Some really awful things and wonderful things happen to her.
   I don't cry often when I read, but there are a few scenes, like when Kethry
almost dies and Tarma calls on the goddess to bring her back, and the flowers
appearing in Talia's wedding ring that make me break down every time.
Divided Allegence has a couple of scenes like that.
 In "Oath of Gold" Paks becomes a Paladin. Like a Herald-Mage except 
that there are far fewer of them. She helps to put a lost king on his throne and
confound some evil gods.
I like the way Moon uses common things to give you the sense of a place. On Paks
first long march the company travels several hundred miles. One of the
things Paks notices is the changes in the build of the cattle and the way the women wear
their kerchiefs.
Paks is a throughly nice person, even if I did want to knock her head against the wall
a couple of times :) and I always enjoy visiting her again. I just wish there were more
books about her.

I have read Lammas Night and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Very interesting 
variations on the one theme.  Great book.  In fact, I have read my copy 
several times. I would definitely recommend reading this.

Funny, that's exactly what my roommate and I were talking about.  He's a

Dirk, iirc, is not the most physically beautiful man, but very cool anyway,
just like Mr. Williams.
Jonathon Frakes is another incredibly versatile and talented actor that
could do any part you put in front of him.  The ST:TNG one where random
parts of the ship start turning into a pyramid/temple thingy where he does
all those voices/characters sticks in my mind just now.  He also play his
brother and his father and ... did you see First Contact... need I say more ;>

Life bonds...
Um,  someone (don't have this post, I wish I could get rid of this itchy
delete finger) was talking about lifebonds being an almost physical thing in
Valdemar... I agree. I see them as an energy link as well.  The concept of
energy seems much more a physical one in Velgarth.  It is constantly used by
mages and etc for all sorts of things from fetching to farsight, and
lifebonds are, to me a part of that  (Very magical).  As far as them
existing in our world, I am of 2 minds. first, that I believe people can be
psychically connected and the idea of lifebonding makes sense, but (the
other side of me says) we don't seem to have enough magic here, today to
support that (not to say that there aren't a lot of magical people and
things, read _Beauty_ by Sheri S Tepper). BTW, this is my -opinion-.  There
Is No One True Way.

I agree.  It seems that disagreeing with people equates somehow with not
liking them, not so says I.  That is what we, collectively, are here for.
to discuss Misty's work and part of that is disagreement and discussion.

Can somebody please tell me what women see in Hugh Grant? I don't 
think he is gorgeous, granted he is not an uggo but gorgeous, can't 
see it myself.
As to his acting ability, have you noticed that most of his 
characters are the same person but under a different name and in 
different locations.[ middle/upper class Englishman, all stiff upper 
lip and phoney accent.]

You're KIDDING!!!  Tarma a redhead???  I'm a redhead, and as much as I
would LOVE to play Tarma, I just don't think it fits.  I know, Maureen's
hair was more chesnut and the technicolor made it bronze more.  But
still, I picture Tarma as a panther of a women-Dark hair, piercing eyes,
shin that brown like a nut in the sun, and she has the carriage of a
warrior. (This is why Xena would suck.  Tarma needs to have the body
appearance of "I could spring like a cat on youand pin you and kill you
before you knew it.  Xena has that, "I'm on camera, I have to look cool
and warriorlike" attitude.)

This is also why I don't like Michelle Pfieffer (sp) as Kreo.  She can
look fierce, granted.  But there is a difference between fierce and
"warrior".

<sheepish Gryn>  Ya know, looking at this, I must admit that I have been
so busy plowing through 70-some messages a day that I kinda stopped
looking at the names at the bottom.  And I FINALLY remembered to turn of
the "Save Sender's address automatically" thing.  Of course, now I have
120 addresses in my book.  Sheesh....

Ok....sumpin' actually about Misty.....How about Kyle McGlaughlin (I
can't spell at 4 am) as Vanyel??  He does arrogant great.....and
loving....and vulnerable....<Am I thinking of the right person??  The
lead from "Dune">  Also, Sting would be interesting as Falconsbane. 
Hmmmm....

ObMisty.....(Very nervous Lady twiddles her fingers for daring to make
her first ObMisty).....Misty writes very few series with a male main
character....The only one I've read is Vanyel.  They're may be other's, I
won't quibble.  But it SEEMS that Misty prefers her heroines to her
heros.  Do you think it's because she has a better struggl making her
"Heroines" overcome their weaknesses???  (God, this feel like an essay
question....it's not....it's 4 am and I can't quite get  where I
want....nevermind...)

The Drizzt stories are excellent and I haven't read the Cleric Quintet so 
I don't know. The Sword of Bedwyr books aren't as good as the books about 
Drizzt IMHO but still interesting.

Yes, don't do it!  Borrow it from a friend or library.  The book was
