The only other male main character that comes to mind is Karal. Darkwind also basically shared time with Elspeth in MageWinds. I think that this is another example of misty trying to focus on a particular audience- mainly adolescent women. This is not to say that her books are not enjoyable for lots of different people, it's just that she figures that most people start reading her books at a younger age, and most of them are female. This is why there are so many young heroines. I know I read the Talia books when I was 13 or so- coincidentally the age that Talia is when those books start. This isn't true for everybody- I know my mom started reading them at the same time I did, but that is the audience she is looking for. I thought Karal had a lot of time stolen from him in that last trilogy. For the main character, he certainly didn't get center stage nearly enough. I'd also like to see a book about Solaris. And I really, really want to learn more about the mysterious land of Iftel. Question--Can anyone start an Order, or must you be a named deity to do it? I'd like to start one. Casting...Kate Mulgrew is an choice for the voice of Need. I'd prefer her as that than as Solaris, for some reason. Probably the cover art on SB. Solaris on the cover looks younger than Mulgrew. And for Need in a flashback before she became the sword--Katherine Hepburn. Hm...Paul Wingfield (Methos) as Karal...I could get to like that. He's a bit old, but I could go for it. Had a weird thought for Ancar--Scott Bakula. It would be somewhat of a waste of his talents as Ancar isn't a major speaking role, but if Ancar ever did have a lot of lines, I bet Bakula could play the part frighteningly well. That man can ACT. Or else Alec Baldwin. The audience, I think, would feel more comfortable with Baldwin in a 'heavy' role than Bakula. I know I would. And, frankly, I'd prefer to see Bakula play a more complex villain than Ancar appeared to have been. How about Anthony Edwards as Dirk? Another thought--Kenneth Branagh as Firesong? I think he's flamboyant and restless enough to carry it off. He does arrogance so well. (g) Has anyone noticed that Lackey doesn't seem to do female villains? Yes, she had Hulda, but aside from her the villains have been male--mainly different incarnations of Ma'ar. Lady Guenevere--(interested look) Are those cloned chocolate sheep??? Many thanks to the several of you who told me where to find the Alberich story; I'll order it right away! Can anyone tell me for certain which Sword and Sorceress anthologies do (or do not) contain Misty stories? I have a bunch of the early ones, but I've gotten careless about getting them in the last five or six years. I'd like to track down the ones I'm missing that do have Misty stories in them. Thanks. Several of you posted messages about the (possible) new McCaffrey movie. I would love to know more. Unfortunately, I deleted a whole batch of messages without meaning to, so I can't ask you privately. If you have info, could you mail it to me privately at: jkpekar-+AT+-crosslink.net ? I'd really appreciate it :-) Am I right in assuming that _chava_, mentioned in the Winds trilogy, is like chocolate? I draw this assumption from the fact that it is used as both a hot drink and a thick cookie, that Elspeth is an instant convert (hence it must be good), and that people are known to do almost anything for it. (See the seduction scene, for lack of a better term, between Darkwind and Elspeth for textevd. Sorry, no time to look up the page reference.) Another question: has anyone ever put together a compilation of "Velgarthan" recipes? It might be a fun project for the list at large. Maybe with everyone contributing one? Just a thought. Re: mothers and adventure: I agree that it is harder to go adventuring when you have littles to take care of. (Mine is 2 1/2, so I'm well aware of the curtailment of my activities.) But we are talking about the Queen and the Queen's Own here! Mothers or not, there is no logical reason to relegate them to the "back burner", as it were. First of all, they are both heavily involved in all the politics and decision-making that goes on in Valdemar -- and there was plenty of that during both the Winds and Mage Storm trilogies. Secondly, it is not always necessary to *go* anywhere to be involved in adventure. Talia got into plenty of adventures within the Palace grounds in AotQ. Third, Talia and Selenay are both Heralds. I understand that most of the time Selenay would remain in Haven; staying in one place and delegating is the price of command. (Though that is not without interest in and of itself.) But other Heralds are like military personnel, in a sense. Children or no children, they go where they are sent. Talia is the obvious choice for ambassadorial missions (witness her trip to open relations with Karse.) And finally, ML had no problem involving Hydona -- and the little ones -- in adventure and danger during the Winds trilogy. In fact, Hydona and Treyvan are adventurers as well as advance scouts and ambassadors. So I still fail to see why Selenay and Talia have been relegated almost to oblivion (especially Talia) during the last few books. On second thought, let me amend that. I do understand why neither shows up much in the Winds trilogy. The focus was definitely elsewhere, on Elspeth and Darkwind, and most of the action happened outside of Haven, so it was appropriate that neither Talia nor Selenay was featured much in that book. Talia got really short shrift in the Mage Storm trilogy, however, when she could have been so much more involved. Most of her very limited involvement, IIRC, was based on her empathic abilities, and very little was in her official capacity as Q'sO. Even Selenay didn't get a whole lot of press in SW, SR, and SB. Yet this trilogy divided its attention among a number of "main" or at least major characters, and a fair amount of the action occurred in or near Haven. Could it be that ML has gotten *bored* with Talia? I think we could make a pretty good case for it. In fact, I'm beginning to think that ML isn't entirely happy with some of the things she did in that first trilogy. She's been (well, ok, some of the characters have been) running down lifebonds recently (and none the lifebonded characters have had much chance to support them, except Stefan, who didn't exactly.) She's been giving short shrift to some well-known and well-loved characters from that first trilogy -- not just Talia but Dirk, Keren, etc. She has moderately or radically modified the personality of other characters from the Arrows trilogy, notably Elspeth and Skif. (I know, in both cases we were to assume the changes were due to maturing and to past experiences, but some things didn't ring true. Although I liked Elspeth in the Winds books, she demonstrated a fair amount of Bratly behavior in the first book-and-a-half; I thought that the Brat was clearly gone by the time Talia was married. What happened to bring that arrogance back? We're never told, and Elspeth's own explanation didn't work for me. She tells Darkwind that back home, she is expected to behave in a certain way because she is a princess. But while the Court may expect that behavior, the Circle certainly doesn't. So why isn't she adept at turning that attitude on and off, and why does it take her so long to figure out that it isn't necessary in the Vale?) It looks to me as if Lackey is distancing herself from what she perceives as immaturity in the first three books. If that's true, it's a pity. I enjoyed the Arrows books for their characterization, their plot lines, and the way that she involved the reader in what was happening by showing (not telling) and by a skilled use of detail. These skills are even more evident in LHM & V&H. Unfortunately, though I've enjoyed most of the Velgarth books written since, I see a lot less consistency in all those skills. Characterization hasn't been as consistent, there is a fair amount of telling mixed in, and it often seems as though whole sections have been rushed through, or minor stories expanded, so that the smooth flow of the narrative is interrupted. I'd love to see her return to the fine craftsmanship evident in LHM and V&H (and the first parts of BTS and L&W), and I hope we will. Oops, I really didn't mean to go on so long. (That's what happens when you write in 10 minute chunks.) I will now go hide under the desk to duck all the outrage from those who think the more recent work is the best! Seriously, if you disagree with me, say so. I love a good argument (as long as it stays polite!) Actually, a few people discussed the topic. Anyway... Misty herself has said she is not Wiccan. I don't remember if she did say what religion she does subscribe to, sorry. But yes, there are some pretty obvious references... like Di Tregarde telling Monica she is a Witch (JH) and Misty's description of some of Di's ceremonial stuff (CotN?) where she has her athame and all. She probably has a few friends who are Wiccan... she probably has experimented with the idea of converting. She definitely has a comfortable enough handle on it that she can write about it without having us all bash her for a misrepresentation of the religion. I think she has a good enough handle on it that a non-Pagan with an open mind could very easily be persuaded to let go of certain stereotypes, and look into these polytheistic religions more. Actually, just as Misty introduced me to queer society (I had been "sheltered" from the concept of non-heterosexuality)... she also introduced me to non-monotheistic religion. So, I have her to thank for my realizations that I am bi and that I am definitely not completely Muslim. I'm only saying TINAF because I don't have a target, but I noticed somebody contributing to this discussion (maybe it's a good thing I have a trigger-happy delete finger - no naming of names) who made it seem as if they were one of a few handful of people who knew about Wicca, and they would be surprised if anybody else had caught the references in Misty's works. Cennydd: on this thy bday I would like to gift thee with a book and a bouquet of virtual jasmins. The bouquet will never wilt and become whatever flower thou wishest(?) it to be, with just a thought. (All right, I *know* being a Mage thou couldst do so anyway, but well, no need to exert thy powers when it is all included, right? It is a nice feature, isn't it?). Now, the book *looks* like a copy of La Casa de los Espiritus by Isabel Allende, (since Ele still thinks thou wouldst enjoy it) but on opening it thou noticest(?) that it is actually any book of thy choice, in whatever language it was originally published, which thou wilst(?) be able to read and understand, of course. BTW, here is a tray of the inevitable chocolate eclairs for RL Ken The Linguist, who prolly had to endure more than one jarring mistake . ObMisty: Hmmm...... Is there any indication of anything like Karma in Valdemar? We know that Heralds reincarnate as Companions, but that does not seem to be in a karmic sense, just in order to continue with their job of protecting Valdemar, but what happens to the bad guys? Do they come back with a karmic burden? Apologies iif this has been discussed, but I have been lurking. [A most excellent purchase.] It's also current - I had it in my hand to buy last Saturday (in London), but then decided to get the first Gatti book instead (which was also a most excellent purchase). ====================================================== The Lady Godiva wrote: > But it SEEMS that Misty prefers her heroines to her > heros. Do you think it's because she has a better struggl making her > "Heroines" overcome their weaknesses??? Well, it seems to me that we have a more ladies than gennlemen on this list, most of my many-times-read-over authors are female, generally about female leads, I like reading about women, I'm currently writing about three women. Are there any statistics about who buys fantasy (as opposed to Sci-Fi)? I've always considered it more female-biased than male - then again, it could just be that those are the sort that appeal to me - after all, I can browse for hours sometimes, and come away with nothing or just the one. ========================================================= ON the discussions about Talia disappearing in the Storm books - I came across a hb copy of the first Storm book, before I'd even realised that there was another series coming (it was before I joined the enlightened), let it drop open randomly, and it was the passage where (I think) An'desha meets Talia and thinks something along the lines of "Ah the empath" and lets her concern wash over him. "Brill", thinks me, "more Talia". Little did I know! ========================================================= Thanks to Moonsight for the McCaffrey note - nice to hear long-time rumours confirmed from the horse's mouth (as it were). Don't all email her at once - she probably didn't mean for her address to go out to an entire list. Message-ID: Hello! I just joined this list and happened to get this message- the Alanna books by Tamora Pierce. I love these books, but heard they are out of print. Does anyone know where i could buy copies? Thanks! I really enjoyed Lammas Night, but only about half the stories in it are worth re reading. I thought it strange however that no one mentioned Sacred Ground, i book i loved and found a fascinating insight to some aspects of Native AMerican culture.
