Aye, Captain. Lurking mode terminated. Heyla, all. Just a few thoughts re: trekkers (mememe!!! Oh, yeah! Hand waves wildly in the air) My favorite is _Voyager_ and Capt Janeway. Great choice for Need! Someone (can't remember who) expressed the opinion that Misty's chracters were too mature to be rendered by animation. IMHO, I think an animated movie would work better that live action. For one thing, you're not limited to the actual physical appearance of the actors. Also, the artist can render some great backgrounds/ special effects. Hiring the right people to record the voices is important. Think about James Earl Jones as Mufasa on _Lion King_. Now, image that voice as Ulrich. I always thought that Ulrich's voice would have that rich, dark, deep, intense, peaceful quality to it. Jermey Irons (Scar) could do the voice of Lereath or Mornelith (talk about your evil sounding voices). Perhaps (oh what's his name. That guy on the Listerine commercials; recorded _Thriller_ with Michael Jackson) could do one of the other villians. Angela Lansbury could do the voice of Gaytha; Capt> Janeway can be Need, Patrick Stewart could do Mero. Oh, bother. It is time to go to class. Activate Lurking device. Activated, Capt. I joined the list about three weeks ago and have been trying to catch up with the digests ever since. This morning I decided to just read the first one that came in and start over from there so if something's already been discussed I apologize in advance. **Casting I think that there are a lot of interesting suggestions out there for a possible movie cast but a lot of actors (male and female) are rejected because of their hair color. Dyes and wigs have been mentioned as well as colored contacts but what hasn't been mentioned is that most movie producers don't care if an actor matches the physical description of the character or not. One I remember vividly is the Black Stallion series - I don't know how many others out there have read it as well (probably a lot since it was a popular series). I loved - and still love - that series and when the movie came out I was thrilled! However, I was young enough to be disappointed when Alex was this little black haired actor instead of a redhead! Yes, I know that this movie thing is all hypothetical and is not really expected to happen but I feel that we shouldn't count people out just because they don't exactly look like the character. Personally, the character I see in my head when I'm reading never looks like the character on the front cover unless the depiction is a very good one. *please note - I'm not always this serious and literal..... Okay, maybe just some of the time....[arm twist].. Okay, most of the time. But I'm lots of fun, too! Honest! ;-) **Meeting Misty I've been a Misty fan for a long time and although I haven't read one of her books in a long while - I've been catching up on Robert Jordan's Turning of the Wheel series (or whatever you call it) - I was excited to see the existance of this list. I'll be going to Dragon*Con this coming June and can't wait to meet both Robert Jordan and Misty. I'm sure that you all have known about it for quite some time but I'm just so excited that I had to share! :) **Pern Movie I really enjoy the Pern series - even though I haven't read enough of them. [wishing I had more hours in a day] A movie - especially with "Jurassic Park"-like special effects should be awesome! It's really great to see more fantasy and sci-fi movies come out. **Birthdays Even though I'm still new and don't really know everyone I'd like to wish all February birthdays many more! I bestow on you all days filled with fantastic weather - whichever kind of weather you prefer - and all the time in the world to read all the books that you want! 8-) Well, I guess that's about it for now. I'm hoping to contribute more in future because I just got some books from the Sci-Fi Book Club that I had ordered and all are Misty's. Although, when I was ordering I couldn't remember which ones I had and which ones I didn't and now that they are here I fear that I may have ordered the wrong ones! It's been about a year since I read my last Misty book and I can't remember if it was the first or second one in the Mage Storms trilogy! Oh well, you can't have enough books! Sorry for the long post. Happy Friday to everyone and I'll try to catch up on the weekend posts on Monday - no promises! :) ~Rysk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 1997 12:33:35 -0500 From: Beverly Steele To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Birthdays/Black Gryphon Message-ID: Since Deniz is so kind as to put out the list, I thought I'd send gifts. To Northcat and Jenna - I send soft cuddlely sheep pillows, just right for snuggleing up when you want to sleep late. (Of course, if my real sheep don't shut up, I may be sending you one of them. My roomate thought it would be cute to teach them to talk to us. Having to beat off 30 screaming sheep every time you go from the gate to the front door makes that loose it's charm _real_ fast.) To Cennydd, who's writings I admire greatly, I send a sheep pillow, and a ream of parchment paper, shaded in different tones of Green along with a caligraphy pen with your favorite shade of ink. Obmisty: Something has been bothering me ever since I read Black Gryphon again. In order for Skan to find Kechara, he had to go into Urtho's library, and through the other door. This wasn't open to just anyone. (Since Cinnabar (?) had to send a written request up to the tower a few days in advance to get in.) So how did Conn Leavy just waltz in and find Kechara? He told Urtho right after he "shot" him with the thorns that he had lead her out of the tower with a piece of rabbit. How did he find out about her in the first place? If Skan and Cinnabar (who were his most trusted people) didn't know about her, how to Conn, who was just a mercenary mage know? Well, that's all for now! That sounds like a great idea but... didn't I hear that JEJ died a few months ago? Llamas Night... Horsefantistic... I've never heard of either of these... tell me more please? Dee... Now you're sending me searching frantically through my S&S books. I don't remember there being that many volumes with Misty stories. Are you sure? Am I crazy? (don't answer that last one *giggle*) Deniz... I'm sending you some fluffy tranquil sheep. You've seemed on edge for a few days now and I hope they help to soothe your frayed nerves. I'm also sending you some "teach the newbie" sheep. They are specifically designed to teach the newbies how to keep from annoying others by teaching them to braid... Hope having one more newbie towing the line helps. BTW I must have missed the negative references to Wicca. Heather... Finally someone else who liked Sacred Ground. I fear that we're in the minority. HTH... I read your wonderful post on lifebonds. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said. Not only that... I really appreciate the fact that you could put words to what I felt. I was very moved by your words. Rhodu... I noticed your comments on Talia "just" being an ambassador for special events. The rest of the time she's with Selenay at the capital. Not much story to work out there As I saw it, Talia was just at the capital with Selenay just when all heck breaks loose. With the tensions of the ambassadors and all other delegates, assassination attempts etc.... I think there would be quite an interesting story there. Of course... that's just MY opinion. *smile* Brian... Don't you think that Helen Hunt would make a better Kethry? My fav for Kerowin has to be Denise Crosby. I agree with you that Jeff Goldbloom would be great for Randale and Michelle Pfieffer for Shavri... Great Call!!! Anyone... How about Lorenzo Lamas as Vanyel and his father could play Withen? I know that some of the people are getting tired of all this casting stuff but... I couldn't resist. I have a suggestion... Everyone send me your casting suggestions off list. I'll prepare a ballot and we'll vote on our favorites. It was the Lioness books that got us into fantasy and writing, so we based out world on Tortall. We then wrote a very complicated book on six characters we created, basing two of the characters on ourselves. Well, to make a story short, we had to have romance in it and so Nydia's character and my character each fell in love with two of the Tortall males. She got Raoul, and I Gareth. After that, no matter what we wrote, the males were Raoul and Gareth, and there are a *lot* of memories surrounding it. Nydia and I are no longer friends, due to a rather silly reason, but I still have the 'books' we wrote. :) ----------------- TREKKERS: Too many Trekkers! I am not one, however, I can proudly say I am a Whovian. Doctor Who is *oh* so much better than Trek, and I say this out of personal opinion... I watched Star Trek for a long time before first seeing Doctor Who. I still like Trek, but the Doctor and all his travels seem a lot more real and believable than some Trek stuff. I made this comment. :) I agree that the animated movies of late are really quite incredible, but I still don't think that these books would be done true justice as, to put it bluntly, cartoons. As for backgrounds/special effects... animation is no longer the only way for great special effects. It's absolutely incredible what computer graphics can do, and I think it would be no problem to convincingly create something like a mage-battle, or gryphons, or any other aspect of Velgarth that is so beloved by us all. This all boils down to a matter of opinion I think... and I just prefer "live" people. ;) Deniz wrote: > Actually, just as Misty introduced me to queer society (I had been > "sheltered" from the concept of non-heterosexuality)... she also introduced > me to non-monotheistic religion. Even if her latest books have been something of a disappointment, she still has had the courage (yes, I *do* think it is courage) to write about subjects many parts of society consider taboo. (ie..homosexuality, strong women, non-Christian religions...) I read my first Misty book at the age of 15 (almost 8 years ago now) and truly feel she helped shape my thoughts and perspectives on many things, and, as cheesy as this may sound, helped add to the person I am now. Also, as far as stuff to read (sorry, forgot who asked): If you like sci-fi as well as fantasy, Frank Herbert's "Dune" saga is great (well, the first three or four...the last two I read more out of loyalty than anything else). And, of course, Anne McCaffrey is always great. As far as lifebonds go, I think that something close to them exists, but I don't think everyone experiences it. I believe that I share something similar with my boyfriend (we've been together for going on three years). We both seem to have this uncanny knack for knowing where the other is, when the other will be late or early, and what kind of mood they're in (even before he picks me up, I'll know if I need to steel myself for a bad mood from him). Yum! ****boredom** Kara--re Misty being bored with Talia. Yeah, you *could* be right. I can also think of another explanation. Every author has obsessions, and Misty's obsessions seem to be the coming-of-age and adventure plots. The former is irrelevent to the Talias and the Selenays. As for the latter... Mature characters (of any gender or marital status) tend to have settled lives, and, unless their lives get ripped up at the roots (as Misty is probably reluctant to do) they aren't too likely to go adventuring; stories featuring real adults have more to do with politics, negotiating, and otherwise using one's interpersonal skills rather than one's martial/magical skills to solve problems--such as the Talia-as- ambassador-to-Karse story, which would, as a mother's life can, be every bit as interesting and challenging as Tarma and Kethry's adventures. I think we'll never see all of that story, because Misty isn't creatively excited by situations of diplomacy; she isn't bored with her characters (thus the cameos), but she is bored by the situations her older characters get into. ****karma** Ele asked, "Is there any indication of anything like Karma in Valdemar? [snip] what happens to the bad guys? Do they come back with a karmic burden?" Hm. I can't answer that completely or directly, but I think there is some kind of "you get what you dish out" at work in Misty's stories. In _Born to Run_, for example, we have Ross Whosis noticing the evil things in the spirit world that lurk around pimps, like vultures, waiting for the pimps to die--because the evil whatevers *like* the taste of bad souls. ****the rest is fluff** Chantal--yeah, anybody can create an Order, so far as I know. Just think ahead about how much fluff your Order might generate, and how to keep that fluff offlist (e.g. petitioning for membership in private, braiding any Order-related announcements, etc.) Hi, Raven! Message-ID: <331789D7.7CE3-+AT+-spectra.net> Since there seems to be so many different questions running amok, I thought I post all info that I have to the group, rather than trying to email each person individually. Apologetic sheeps to anyone I annoy... Melissa asked about DragonCon.... in the lastest QO issue, this information was printed: "Misty and Larry (her husband, for those who might not know) will be Guests of Honor at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, June 26-29 at the Inforum Convention Center and Hyatt Rgency Atlanta. Mark Shepherd and Josepha Sherman also plan to attend, as do many Queen's Own folk. 4-day memberships are $40 to March 15, $50 to May 15, and $60 at the door. The room rate at the Hyatt is $112 per night single with each additional person $10 more. You can specify Quiet or Party Floor. Call 404-577-1234 to make your reservations." "Send a SASE to Dragon*Con '97, PO BOX 47696, Atlanta, GA 30362-0696 for registration information. As for Firebird Arts and Music, their online web site contains *more* information than their catalog. The URL is... www.usa.net/firebird/index.htm If you still would like the smail address/phone number, please email me direct and I will dig it up for you. ; This should give you all the information available without actually talking to the folks at Dragon*Con/Firebird... hope this helps! Message-ID: <970228231019_-1440352155-+AT+-emout16.mail.aol.com> Okay, I have to put my $0.02 in hre because I am practically an expert on all type of animation out there..In fact it is part of my chosen career...So I can tell you that Japanese animation is the PERFECT way to make a movie based on ML''s books...I have seen just about all of the Japanese animation out there...and lets face it, theres nobody out there who can do credit in a screen play for the characters in these books and not likely any actors that we can ALL agree on to play the parts...But an animated mini-series, that's different...In Japanese animation there is no bias towards homosexuality, in fact most of it turns to some sort of homosexual bend...both in males and females...this can deal with the *moral* arguments that an animated version of the books would be *Disneyfied*(i.e. that the violence and sexuality would be deminished...) and that little kids would be temted to see them.... frankly most Japanese animation is NOT for kids...If you have seen any anime you know what I mean... Well that's my opinion...I would appriciate all coments...
