Message-ID: <333A1820.4678-+AT+-spectra.net> Sorry for the single topic post... there really hasn't been anything pop up to make a braid of.... :) Several people have been discussing various mythological creatures in Misty's worlds; I reread Storm Warning tonight and when I came across this passage, those conversations sprang to mind... Storm Warning, pg 207, hardcover edition ...this is right after Karal's first meeting of An'desha, on his was back to the Collegium... "I have seen gryphons listed in the Writ, among other creatures that Vkandis is said to love -- sunhawks, snowhorns, scaled ones. They are said in the Writ to be special, "created without guile;" ...." Sunhawks = Phoenix? Snowhorns = Unicorns? Scaled Ones = Dragons?? I thought the phrasing gave away a little something too ... these creatures are listed along with gryphons, which we know were created. Therefore, would it be too much to assume that these other creatures were created as well and they just haven't made an appearance to us? ;) On the thread of dragons in Velgarth ... Valdemar and the immediate countries strike me as having similiar climate regions as the continental US ... forests and colder climates in the north, plains and semi-arid land in the south ... dragons (with the exception of cold-drakes) would be creatures that prefer warmth and lots of it! So, maybe they exist in Velgarth, but much farther south that any lands we have been introduced to so far. If so, did Urtho create them and they migrated before the Mage Wars, or did someone else, perhaps a certain Karsite deity, have a hand in their creation? Just a few thoughts in the wee hours of the morn... ;) Oh yes... *sigh* I officially concede that Darkwind and Elspeth are lifebonded .... Storm Warning, hardcover edition, pg 126.. Elspeth is comforting An'desha after he gets upset over Darkwind and Firesong's flirting and his own anger... "..it wasn't what you thought it was! Darkwind and I are bonded and Firesong knows it..." I still don't think Kero and Eldan are though. ;P Crystal Champion of plain, ordinary, Love ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Mar 1997 23:59:51 -0700 From: Megan Schreiber To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: mythological creatures... I assumed Talia was daydreaming herself into what was otherwise a more-or-less factual recounting of Vanyel's last days, casting herself as the female Herald (something she longed to be, though she didn't believe it was possible to become one.) It gave me an immediate way to relate to her, since daydreaming myself into a story or world is something I've done since I was a tiny child. I'd guess most of us who read fantasy have done the same a time or two! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Crystal wrote: >dragons (with the exception of >cold-drakes) would be creatures that prefer warmth and lots of it! If so, did Urtho create them and they >migrated before the Mage Wars, or did someone else, perhaps a certain >Karsite deity, have a hand in their creation? Interesting question! BTW, I liked your suggestions re sunhawks, snowhorns, and scaled ones, even though I agree with Megan that the latter two are most likely to be dyheli and hertasi, and the former are probably firebirds or whatever it was that burned Vostel. (And nice job on the textevd!) But back to your question on dragons...You are probably right about dragon habitat. If there are dragons on Velgarth, they are more likely to be down where the Haighlei live, or wherever Geyr (BTS) is from. I don't think Urtho would have created dragons, though. His territory was large, but not large enough to encompass lands that far south. He had such love and concern for the creatures of his creation that it seems unlikely that he would make beings only to cast them loose. Granted, dragons may not need a lot of protection from human beings, but Urtho doesn't seem like the type to cast loose a creature that could do so much damage to other beings, either. And it's really unclear whether Vkandis' influence stretches as far south as that (at least as Vkandis. Maybe under another Name or aspect?) Incidentally, there was no hint of dragons (IIRC) in WG, the only book to deal with the Haighlei Empire to any extent, but that still doesn't mean they don't exist somewhere in Velgarth. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have a related question: Who created hertasi? Tervardi? Kyree? Dyheli? Are any of these "creations" of some mage, creations of a god or gods, products of evolution, or creatures that were changed by the Cataclysm? Hertasi predate the Cataclysm, so they can't fall into that category. Hertasi, tervardi, and dyheli appear to have *some* relationship to nonsentient creatures on Velgarth (lizards, birds, deer). Even kyree could be related to canines or possibly a canine-feline cross of some sort (not impossible in a world full of magic). But I can't remember whether there is any evidence to prove whether these beings were purposefully created, evolved, or were warped by wild magic. Anyone else? And while we're on the subject, where did people come from? But I don't recall any primates on Velgarth, except possibly the "tiny, huge-eyed furry creatures [that] scampered tamely up the plant's trunks" inside the Haighlei buildings. [WG, p. 55, US hardcover ed.] Those could conceivably be monkeys or lemurs, but they could as easily be rodent-relatives as primates. (Pardon me if lemurs aren't primates; biology isn't my strong suit!) But there are no references to any primate of enough size to be a close human relative -- so where did the Velgarthian humans come from? I've been toying with the theory that humans are not native to Velgarth, that in fact they originated on our Earth (or an Earth-analog), and came to Velgarth through unknown means. I base this "theory" on the facts that a) humans don't seem to have a close evolutionary relative on Velgarth, and b) Many Valdemaran names are variations on Earth names: Talia, Kris, Sherrill, Elspeth, Dirk, etc. Can anyone think of other evidence which either supports or disproves this? Whoops, I'd better stop procrastinating and get back to doing what I sat down to do... It is illegal to make any MOO/MUSH/MUD or other RPG based on Misty's work. This has been suggested on a number of occasions, however Misty, speaking through her lawyers, has made it clear that she will vigorously prosecute anyone that she catches violating her copyrights in this way. Whether we agree with her about the correctness of that decision is immaterial. Creating a Velgarth RPG is breaking the law. While this may not stop anyone from doing it (laws frequently don't have much effect), it does mean that if you do create an illegal RPG based on Velgarth, Auntie Mel has asked that it NOT be announced or discussed on this list. I second that. I like the Misty list, and I do not want to lose it, because someone got Mel into legal problems.
