Power? Maybe.... (I admire him too..) >Anyone else feel this way? I admired him because he was realistic. I mean he wasn't perfect. He could have been one of two ways. When he saw the Half-elves he saw the people that tried to overthrow the elves. Remember Dyran liked Human women better then elven women. So you have to think that he had some compassion towards the humans. I see him as believing that what he did was for the betterment of him and his people. There were few cases but he still had to care for them. I mean look at Serena. She had to have at least been cared for by him for her dissapearance to have made him so upset. I mean just losing a possession like that could really really do that. Even if he was petty in some areas. That is why I admired Dyran as well. He was more human than most of her characters. Valyn was a key example of this. He was the epitome of good. He rescued his half-elven cousin so that he wouldn't be culled when they found out. No matter if that could mean the destruction of the elves rule. Tylendal was unusual in having 4 gifts - Mindspeech, Empathy, Fetching and Mage-gift. Most Heralds & Herald-Mages had 1 or 2 strong gifts, few as many as 3. (Text evd - MPawn, Chpt 9) > Also, If you're mage gifted, can you pick the school you go to or are you just gifted in one school? In Oathbound (1st Chpt) Kethry tells Tarma that when she started throwing things around, w/out hands, during her nightmares, her nurse took her to the nearest mageschooll she knew, which happened to be White Winds. The inference is that it could have been any school. > Also, can you be a mage and a Herald? I think I remember him saying that he could be a more solid form, but that it takes more effort. It makes a lot of sense, but why aren't there many lifebondings involving Healers? Maybe the Gift that is important here is the one that makes the Herald-Companion link? Kestra'cherns are IMHO sort of like Mindhealers. This is in the gryphon series. Yes Van was a Herald-Mage!! That it is why the series is called The Last Herald-Mage, because he was the last. But by the Mage Winds and Mage Storms series it has been so long since Van's time that people could be a Herald Mage and not know it because they don't know what to look for!! That is why Elspeth had to go of and find someone who could see and recognize the gift!! She is a training Heral-Mage is she not??!!
