Katie, I have often wondered about Van's Bardic gift often. In the begining of MPawn, he would have given anything to be a bard yet when he had the gift with all of the other ones he never gave it another thought not even a quick thought of, I can be a bard, or my dream has come true or anything of the sort!! That just struck me as odd. But then I thought about it and this is what I came up with. First of all after the shock of Tylendel and everything wore off and he got better and had accepted the fact that he was a Herald--Mage now he new that he had to use all of his powers for the good and that he had that need that Tylendel had and he finally understood so to him he had to use the other ones and give his want up. Also when I thought about it Savil only says that all of the channels had been blasted open and that he had all of the gifts. She didn't say that all of the gifts were of the same strength so I figured that, it must mean that the Bardic gift was one of the less least in strength. Well, I hope that this has all been coherent enough!! Message-ID: <199704060023.SAA02798-+AT+-sol.racsa.co.cr> Someone asked about Vanyels Gift. I think of it this way: Vanyel wanted to be a bard, but didn't have bardic gift. After a while of being with Tylendel, he dropped his long time dream of being a bard. After 'Lendel's death, with all the backlash, and his blasted channels, he had every heraldic gift at full strength, except for healing, which was only opened a little way, and a little of bardic. It seems that once you are Chosen, no matter what your gifts are, either you back out of being a Herald, and go into the other Collegia, which i don't think's ever happened, or you stay as a herald with your gifts. The example i would mention is Herald Jadus, in AofQ. He had been in Bardic for 3 years before he had been chosen. He said that that was why he wasn't a Bard. I think that other gifts, like Bardic and Healing, are for Heralds extra help, in case they need a disguise, like Van's in MPromise. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Apr 1997 19:03:10 CST From: "JAIME HATHAWAY" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: How?? Thank you, thank you to Tracy for that text from the QO newsletter!!! I have to say I'm extremely happy to have been proven right ... as many of you know, I've held the opinion for a long time that not every couple in her books were lifebonded... sometimes love is enough. (isn't that a ballad of some sort...? hrm...) Someone mentioned something (deleted the post) that they thought anything other than a lifebond was impossible for Heralds... to paraphrase the text, the the Companion bond, and the bond to the Circle take up so much "emotional" room, that rarely is there "room" left for a third intense bond. It doesn't say that Heralds *can't* fall in love... only that it isn't likely to happen. Did that help clear anything up or did I only muddle the waters further... ? I never thought that lifebonding was the only explanation for Kero and Eldan's "communication" with each other. The Gifts portrayed in Misty's world have never been fully explained, so isn't it possible that this is a side-effect of some sort? IMHO, there are paranormal and unexplained happenings all over Velgarth so why not consider some of those causes instead of assuming that just because two characters are a couple, they *have* to be lifebonded. Make sense? I have to agree with you. The actual chance that the lifebond happen are rare as they are glorious. I have to agree with Jaime. The Kero and Eldon thing is strange. I had definately thought that they were lifebonded. They seem more so than any other lifebonded couple except maybe Vanyel-Tylendel. Anyone who could clear this up more, I would appreciate it. =20 I have a question. I'm not sure if it has been addressed yet. When Savil takes Vanyel to K'treva, how does she know where to go? It has been said in numerous books that the Hawkbrothers move their vales. If so, how could she Gate to their lands? Had they just not moved in a long time? She said it had been many years since she had last seen them. Just wondering. Randy Topham=20 I think that from the time that she was there the first time until the = time that she came back there was a few years, but the wild magic was = not under control yet so they have not move the vale. Everything else was either very strong love or someone was > deluding him/herself." > That would rule out Kero and Eldan as being lifebonded. Sorry. Then this would make a unique situation here Here's Kero and Eldan--they only know each other for a few days before Kero splits with Need, they don't have exceptionally strong Gifts of Mindspeech--and Kero doesn't even USE hers!--and yet, they are linked for YEARS mentally through dreams before they ever meet again and admit their feelings for each other. even LIFEBONDED couples aren't that close when they meet--at least no one we know. Maybe we all thought--at least I did--that they were lifebonded because of Elspeth's musing in Winds of Fate (not a direct quote) "Talia had Dirk, Kero had Eldan, her mother had Daren....was it so wrong to want someone for herself? She realized she might have to be alone for the rest of her life [because of her Gift, IIRC], and she accpted it, but oh, it hurt to give up her dream [of wanting someone]." This is a really bad paraphrase, but that's the gist of it. I don't know about the rest of you, but that made me think Kero and Eldan were lifebonded, probably because the other couples she mentioned were lifebonded. Did anyone else read into this what I did? this, and the fact that Kero and Eldan WERE linked for all those years after having known each other for only a few days(how long did they know each other?)--I just automatically assumed they were lifebonded--it seemed the only logical explanation for why they were linked like that. Am I alone here? Well, that's about it for now..... Zhai'helleva, Jacquelle "You broke your little ships." Lily to Picard Star Trek: First Contact I am not shure that they were really lifebonded. I think that because of need or the goddess they were linked. korenci ------ =_NextPart_000_01BC4204.CFD55BA0 Content-Type: application/ms-tnef Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 eJ8+Ih0EAQaQCAAEAAAAAAABAAEAAQeQBgAIAAAA5AQAAAAAAADoAAENgAQAAgAAAAIAAgABBJAG AEgBAAABAAAADAAAAAMAADADAAAACwAPDgAAAAACAf8PAQAAAFcAAAAAAAAAgSsfpL6jEBmdbgDd AQ9UAgAAAABtZXJjZWRlcy1sYWNrZXlAaGVyYWxkLmNvLnVrAFNNVFAAbWVyY2VkZXMtbGFja2V5 QGhlcmFsZC5jby51awAAHgACMAEAAAAFAAAAU01UUAAAAAAeAAMwAQAAAB0AAABtZXJjZWRlcy1s YWNrZXlAaGVyYWxkLmNvLnVrAAAAAAMAFQwBAAAAAwD+DwYAAAAeAAEwAQAAAB8AAAAnbWVyY2Vk ZXMtbGFja2V5QGhlcmFsZC5jby51aycAAAIBCzABAAAAIgAAAFNNVFA6TUVSQ0VERVMtTEFDS0VZ QEhFUkFMRC5DTy5VSwAAAAMAADkAAAAACwBAOgEAAAACAfYPAQAAAAQAAAAAAAADbUIBCIAHABgA AABJUE0uTWljcm9zb2Z0IE1haWwuTm90ZQAxCAEEgAEAPgAAAFJFOiBsaWZlYm9uZHMsYWFjayBJ IGtub3cgeW91IHdhbnQgdGhpcyBzdWJqZWN0IHRvIGRpZSBidXQuLi4ANBUBBYADAA4AAADNBwQA BQATAA8ADwAGABQBASCAAwAOAAAAzQcEAAUAEwANABkABgAcAQEJgAEAIQAAADhEMkZGOUEyRTVB REQwMTE5RkZGODhEMTA2QzEwMDAwAEUHAQOQBgAkCAAAEgAAAAsAIwABAAAAAwAmAAAAAAALACkA AQAAAAMANgAAAAAAQAA5AKDakl0wQrwBHgBwAAEAAAA+AAAAUkU6IGxpZmVib25kcyxhYWNrIEkg a25vdyB5b3Ugd2FudCB0aGlzIHN1YmplY3QgdG8gZGllIGJ1dC4uLgAAAAIBcQABAAAAFgAAAAG8 QjBdV6L5L46t5RHQn/+I0QbBAAAAAB4AHgwBAAAABQAAAFNNVFAAAAAAHgAfDAEAAAAOAAAAa29y ZW5Ad2ljLm5ldAAAAAMABhAR9/LEAwAHEEwGAAAeAAgQAQAAAGUAAAAtLS0tLS0tLS0tRlJPTTpK QUlNRUhBVEhBV0FZU01UUDpKU0pBSEFUSEBGVVRVUkVKVURTT05FRFVTRU5UOkZSSURBWSxBUFJJ TDA0LDE5OTc4OjExUE1UTzpLT1JFTkBXSUNOAAAAAAIBCRABAAAAhwYAAIMGAACICwAATFpGdU5n 9Mr/AAoBDwIVAqgF6wKDAFAC8gkCAGNoCsBzZXQyNwYABsMCgzIDxQIAcHJCcRHic3RlbQKDM7cC 5AcTAoM0EQUTU0MHQMRsaQnAYXBoBJACgC59CoAIzwnZOxfvMjUeNQKACoENsQtgbmcxvDAzFFAL ChRRC/JjAECOIAqFCosWYDE4MALR4GktMTQ0DfAM0B6zuQtZMTYKoANgE9BjBUC+LSDXCocfiwww IFZGA2EOOiHeIFYMgiBKQUlATUUgSEFUJfBXAEFZW1NNVFA6EGpzamERgHRoQAhmdXQIcGUuanWU ZHMCIC4JgHVdIX8/Io0GYAIwI78kyyNwaWQ4YXksFLATUAMRMDQBLQAxOTk3IDg6MjEcsFBNKI8i jVRvWyrPJMtrBbAJ8EAD8GMcLm4RwC6PKZ51YmpnIJEwryTLUmU1wBZgZkplBuBuJ/AsYQDQa6Qg STJwbm8H4HkIYDwgdwBwBUAnMAQAIHMjNWQ5wG8gZAiQIGKdJ3AuO0Ac3x3jMzYfV4McJSBWLiAg RXYEkMZ5OdEa8CBlbBGwOXHZBCBlaScwBJAgPrI6EN50A2A/IReAPrAgBbEoAO8HgAIgP4QKhT46 wD9QJ+AzPxI54G0vFsERsGxmdC4iQldUJxE5cAhgbDhkIHJFQEFBJ3AgS+8EkDqwAHBFYEVFUAOR P7G+Yj/gQOI39QmAPnFTBbB/PtA7bUTQCfA5xEUkAMBr0TrwYSB1AwBxClA6EPU/8HUnIGkCIENg BJA68Psl4EwxJwQgRhcKhUajINC3QAFAgAIgbECAOPNlAND+aEFQQAMCEAXASvA4AAfg3yzRRxJQ ATrwRhNzC1A/8H9CNwPwJzAHsQmALQBOY2QdAiAnBUARgEExZXhj3mUFMEvhFkFAh0cGkFHxtG9m HMZNC4An8HAJ4H8RcCDQRmJGE1OQB5BTsmWzPrADoFVTJdBDsiFXNL55EcBTJQrAOvAWYG5KwMNN Z1ACWUVBUgXwB4BPAjBU0ycwA2B1Z0+AZPkX8GFtUNdOY1hhBcAHgBsRwEZQZwtxTTphZG27P/BT MmlP4QngWoFnBCAPUAJPWD5xWGNMSUZFgEJPTkRFRCAFoP51C1AHkVpBU7IKhScwRPH+YxeAP3JJ tE6BXpJXMQVA/0WgP7AFQDkATqE/gTrwOPL9PnFNLOBHMGdSFkFkOFzC92Y6ONA60GROQkTxTmNn YMdaU0e2RyFjYXU/cVX4b0agVtEnMEzBbWywPxIgbV8RV1aiVeJGJyA68Ch/OQBewTrBF/AgoUtA IHEpeQqFIlQHQAcwU+FFYET9YIBrLQBGE3HiRqMtAEAS3wRgQANx42PSO0EuP6JgIf8oAFIXQMM6 oTmDQZZQAkO1vj9IQRbARXBPUBZgelrB/nN4YWAQaYFT5DqhaDFfhv8XgHdFQAF4gWbBVfFAEjfi PCBbbHlAElWSLQBJSXhSQ10tAEZieSJfhmN+YwUwWsE/8C0AOxFBUGibLQBgIWgIcDqDZ2lBMf9j cHNzXRN8wFXxOYI/EgqF/UGVXUQnRNA58TnxSvB4kv1O0WJx8QqxFqEWkBGwgDT/ZLJMwXuCgYB7 5D/wPnFqYf9TowqFOPMBoEXSe4o5QYbY/0qRDbBb8TnCWqBGDlIma4z/LQAgUYXwAmCF0WyFe4JP pP9jVnkjKpFL4VrIa30+cXIg/0VgAHA5QEHhP1NdIX/xAjDvOrBJ9ETiamM/ZEcEAH6EHXuCZgDQ i4VGHVdFUv8l0FqFUANooWlBP3EKhVmg7xGRRlABgHQDdj8SOPIDoPdPXU6zUEgoaVAH4Hrxg0fn aoFTNE8NPykg0DjQJ9D/ZsFsoDqgAMBL0GyQVOI/sP86IAeAoBVrcwqFR5gg0HVC/wngo0VOpBeA gYCioVQxC1H/VMBL01ACZWBccqOvWqMWYPdKwWSyPnFBgoA40HrkTCL1lnZXP1BsUyKHU4n0YCEv UAJnonTCCoVaEYBpJ6cWwBZQWGBhLAqFSgDQr0tBrvE7fHEGWTlRYgNgf0rBOUF8YgJARaF5IAUg c91EJ0wDEFxxOrBQopELIF0KhVMBkEmBF/BrNcBG/2CAZsEIUFwhIKA7fzyOFWH/C/AR4AqPG/yq sYKAb9J5IP8nkWSkayiFhUebONCMdGSz72x5MyBawXtVZwRwDbAEEZ9rKlqiO222zDKDY2m2zAUX EQDFcAADABAQAAAAAAMAERAAAAAAQAAHMMBdtBswQrwBQAAIMMBdtBswQrwBHgA9AAEAAAAFAAAA UkU6IAAAAAASvw== ------ =_NextPart_000_01BC4204.CFD55BA0-- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Apr 1997 19:17:57 -0700 From: koren-+AT+-wic.net (Larry Whiteman) To: "'mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk'" Subject: RE: lifebonds, aack I know you want this subject to die but... Message-ID: Heyla all, I thought that I could remain quiet on this subject, but I can't. There has been a lot posting recently that violates the netiquette for this mailing list. I am including Mel's Rules of Thumb in this post. Please read it and follow her guidelines. Remember, we are all guests on Mel's *business* computers (vanyel is the computer that she uses in her professional capacity as a computer consultant and service provider). Since we are able to enjoy her hospitality, it is only fair that we be well-mannered guests and try to live by the few rules that she has set. It may also help to remember that there are reasons for these rules. For the most part, all of the guidelines are designed to either foster common courtesy towards others on the list (something I think that we can all support) or they are designed to reduce the workload for vanyel (remember that an overworked computer is a computer that is going to crash--which means "bye-bye list"). Anyway, please be good guests and follow Mel's guidelines as much as possible. (Bearing in mind, of course, that the other option is to continue to be impolite and run the risk of getting yelled at privately by others on the list who do not appreciate such behavior.) ----------- Auntie Mel's Rules Of Thumb (written by Mel) --------------- These Rules of Thumb for posting to the Lackey list are posted about once a month, on average; they're an attempt to keep the traffic down to a loud roar rather than a deafening howl. It would be nice if new subscribers read these before posting ... but one can't have everything. These ideas probably apply to just about every other mailing list around, too. If you want to quote them elsewhere, fine, but please ask me first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Trim quoted text. Trim headers to the minimum. We're looking for something along the lines of " said:" rather than six lines of quoted header with no content. Is all of what you're quoting still relevant? We want enough left to keep track of the discussion, not its entire history. BUT -- see 1a). 1a) Preserve attributions. Try, however, to keep track of who did say what. Being misquoted is annoying; being quoted as saying something you did not, more so. 2) Think before you post. I try to read through all of the list mail that has arrived before I post; especially on the weekends, if someone has a general question, the chances are extremely good that someone else will already have answered before I see it. It is obvious that with the delays caused by processing the mail, sending it out, etc., you can't guarantee that nobody will have answered a question before you, but if a couple of days have gone past, the chances aren't bad. 2a) Keep the fluff level down. People's mail systems vary, and many people receive the mailings as a digest. The latter group, in particular, cannot just delete individual messages, and I will not tolerate people being driven from the group because they cannot keep up with the level of mail, if that level is being artificially inflated by fluff. I don't mind the occasional off-topic message, but if you're posting several such per day, consider yourself warned. (Alt.books.m-lackey, the Lackey newsgroup, is far fluff-heavier than this list, and this is most likely because it is (generally) easier to skip unwanted articles within news readers rather than mail readers. It is also the main reason why I read about two articles a day from the newsgroup, if that.) 2b) One-liners are a Bad Thing. If you feel that you have to respond to someone with a one-line comment, and that comment is not an answer to a question that has been asked, consider replying by mail directly to that person. (Comment: at the moment, because this is a discussion list, the default is that, when one hits the 'Reply' button, the mail is directed to the list at large, rather than the sender of the message to which you are replying. If you do not know how to change this, if necessary, you should talk to your local support folks. Asking for help on the list is unlikely to be productive, since we don't know what mail system you're using, and they vary wildly.) 2c) Long .signature files are Right Out. The suggested length of signatures on Usenet is four lines. On this list, where many people post several times a day, it is probably safe to assume that people will remember who you are after the first post. Therefore, attaching an 8 - 10 line signature to every post is seen as antisocial. Don't do it. 2d) But, but, why can't they just delete or skip over or unsubscribe? Why should they have to? Some people pay for every byte of mail they receive. (Yes, this is still the case in some countries..) Some people pay phone charges to download their mail. (Just about anyone in the UK who logs in from home, for starters; local calls are not free in the UK.) I -- or, to be strictly accurate, my business -- pay for the link to the Net over which list mail is sent. Yes, your off-topic postings can inconvenience people. Yes, your long signature is costing people money. No, they can't just ignore it. So don't be so damn selfish. 3) If you've got a query about how to subscribe/unsubscribe/(etc).... Read the FAQ. The relevant section is posted here semi-regularly; it's also available via the Web, via FTP, or by mail. Web: http://www.herald.co.uk/local_info/lackey_faq.html FTP: ftp://ftp.herald.co.uk/pub/lists/lackey-archives/lackey_faq.1 Mail: send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk, leave the subject line blank or use "No Subject", message to read get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.1 Don't post your query to the list. If it's a list-related question, and the answer's not in the FAQ, then send me mail at lackey-owner-+AT+-herald.co.uk. Bear in mind that I work (fairly) normal office hours -- this means that questions mailed to me over a weekend may not be answered until Monday. I might log in over the weekend, but assuming that that will be the case is likely a Bad Idea. 4) Other things not to post: Almost anything that you have found online, unless it's obviously and specifically Lackey-related. Especially if it says "Please post this to anywhere you can". Notable examples: o anything saying "Make Money Fast" o any mention of the Good Times virus (it doesn't exist) o any request for postcards/business cards/get well cards to be sent to a little boy who's dying of cancer (he didn't die; he's still alive, and he really, really doesn't want any more cards. Neither does his local Post Office, which is also my local office at home!) o anything about forthcoming legislation (this is an international list, and as such any legislation is likely to apply to no more than half of the people on the list) If you think that there should be an exception, mail the item concerned to me -- mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk -- and if I agree with you, I'll forward it to the list. But I'm an unreasonable bitch, as you probably already gathered by reading the rest of this post, so don't get your hopes up. Mel. --------------End BTW, that being said, here are a few things that I would like to add, that have proven to be good guidelines on this list. 1) Please do not post requests for bondbirds, Namings, or inclusion in the various groups and clubs to the list. If you want to request one of these things, post directly to the person responsible and they will periodically post a compilation of requests and responses. (BTW, for info about the Naming of Gods, contact me.) 2) Remember that this is a list about the works of Mercedes Lackey. Although there seems to be a recurring thread about "what other writers do you like," this is not really the place for in-depth discussions of other writers, except insofar as they are being compared or contrasted with Misty's work. The same applies for TV shows, movies, et cetera. If you want to discuss these things, do so in private email or see if there is a mailing list devoted to this topic. (BTW, Mel--and a number of other people living outside the US--have threatened to do dire things to anyone who discusses Babylon5 plots on this list, since the earlier seasons are only now coming out in other parts of the world.) 3) Finally, remember that this mailing list is not a newsgroup. Please be sure, if you are replying to a single person (and particularly if there is no Misty content in your reply) that you are replying directly to them and not to the list. There have been a few posts to the list in recent days that seemed to be no more than personal correspondance via the list. Don't treat the list like a message board. Treat it like an on-topic conversation with a lot of participants and a bunch of simultaneous threads and I quarantee it will be more fun and interesting for everyone. In the past, this list has been almost like a family (in fact, if you go back through the archives, there is even a description of the list personalities and the "family" relations). With a little work, cooperation, and common courtesy, we can keep it a fun place to discuss Misty and her works. Without the effort and courtesy, though, the list will only go downhill.
