Noe that I think about it, it's most likely possible to tell if the kid has mage talent before it's born. I know worlds don't cross, but in Darkover, the Comyn parents could sense their child after two or so months, and something similar is probably able to happen with the child. A mage gifted mother, or anyone magegifter for that matter, I'd say could go and monitor the unborn child to se if it carries mage potential. I'd say that if Nyara had a child by Falconsbane and he saw that the kid wasn't going to be a mage, he'd either abort it then and there or he'd let it live to torture Nyara with it. Vanyel, I'd say, didn't check his kids out until after they were born, or else why would he have been so surprised when Jisa *felt* him coming? Kerry, That is a very good point!! I must say that after reading your explanation and reasoning that I look at the book cover of MPrice totally different!! Though there is one small problem. His hair is extrememly black and by this time it should only have a few streaks of black in it if anything at all. The cover of MPromise had more silver in his hair than MPrice. I can understand why they couldn't do it all beceause of his head being next to 'fandes' neck but they could have put in some so that you could see that the silver was represented. But this is a minor complaint That I can do nothing about. You have given me the explanation that I needed. I see your view of the book. Thank you!! Of course, with prudence, a mage will not work any of the greater magics (Gates and the like) because of all of the power involved. But I'm sure that if it came right down to it, a pregnant mage would do whatever she had to do in order to preserve her hide. It's a matter of just weighing one evil against another at that point. We are beginning a series of topic chats on The Herald Mage series, beginning with Magic's Pawn. As well, our entertainment coordinators have been working to get in touch with Ms. Lackey for the possibilities of meeting with her fans on a special event chat to be held in the coming months. I was wondering if you would be interested in attending any of these chats, or would like more information to promote it on any of the sites in the Heraldic Circle (which I finally found!). I am currently visiting overseas (and writing this believe it or note from a Windows CE palmtop... ain't technology grand? :)), but will be back in Toronto on the 20th of April. Those LOVE-BONDS were like blood feathers; if he touched them, they might break, ....." Emphasis is mine. And on pge 123 Stefen is telling Skif and Nyara that "just" being in love is O.K. Skif says: "To think I've envied Talia and Dirk all this time-".....and then later Stefen says, "...Love now-a good, solid love is something infinately rarer and more difficult to maintain, because you DON'T know everything your partner is feeling....." He goes on and on listing the wonderful qualities of love. This would be rather pointless if Skif and Nyara were lifebonded, and since their relationship is equated to Elspeth and Darkwind's relationship this proves that neither of them are lifebonded. As for the Great Pregnant Mage Debate: On page 268 WoFury (I'm going to paraphrase a bit here) it says that the room that the heartstone is in is heavily shielded as it must be to be in the center of a populated area and that even Firesong doesn't know what the energies of a hearstone would do to someone that wasn't Tayledras (remember heartstones are a purely Tayledras thing except the one in Lineas) Elspeth had Vanyel's word that she would come to no harm from the heartstone's energy and that "These energies might not harm, say, a woman with child-but what if that woman were not a mage?" this is the important part "MAGES AUTOMATICALLY TOOK IN ENERGY AND INCORPORATED IT INTO THEMSELVES." (empasis is mine) I'm pretty sure that this means that mages with child will not be harmed because they incorporate it into themselves, so it doesn't get to the baby. Also (and this is purely MHO) I don't think that you can tell whether or not a child is going to have the Mage-Gift or any other Gift before it is born because Elspeth says when she checks the other heralds for the Gift that they don't have it unless its latent, if she can't tell on adults and she's an Adept I highly doubt anyone could tell befor the baby was born, although they might be able to tell if it has Mage-Potential, I'm not sure. Jaquelle asked: >I don't think Misty ever touched on this subject, but what would >happen to a female Herald with the Mage Gift if she became pregnant? >Have any of the Herald Mages/regular Mages ever gotten pregnant? As many people have already said, lots and lots of female mages *must* have gotten pregnant. I seem to recall that there is a superstition on Velgarth that getting a mage pregnant makes her lose her magic, which implies that some of them cut down on their magical activities *drastically* while pregnant (I'm guessing that evidence for this superstition would be in Obound or some of Need's memories). I doubt that pregnant mages find themselves unable to do magic, but til we actually get a look at life from the point of view of a pregnant mage, anything's possible. It may be that some mages have different side effects from pregnancy, just like some women get horrible morning sickness, and others have no problems at all.
