Evidently, when all = that was going on re: cloning sheep, things got kinda crazy, and people = started making jokes, and such about it. It is customary, (at least in = the groups that I've seen) to greet one another with something tasty. = The sheep thing is just a left over so to speak from all of this.=20 Back to Valdemar, yes USUALLY there is only 1 grove-born companion at a = time, which is the king/queen's own Herald. Okay, since no one else seems to be answering this question that really knows what it's about, I'll tell you. Quite a while ago on the list someone started making jokes about cuddling up with a sheep at night to keep warm ( because of the wool), or jokes about the sheep faced boy, etc. Anyway, some of the jokes were a little off-color and one person in particular got offended which caused a whole wave of sheep related things. Now people gift each other with sheep related items and if you want to become a God of something it is appropriate to send a tithe to Cennyyd, the Avatar of Nomenclature, of a sheep related nature. Any of the ancients on the list please feel free to correct or add to my explaination. I'm wondering if the list is really quiet or is there an Email problem? I'm only getting three or four messages a day now that I've re-subscribed. Has anyone else been having problems? Umm...an ObMisty. I know we had the weaponsmaster giving training in Valdemar but is there a collegium of Warfare? Or is it that everyone is trained in how to handle a weapon of some kind? Has anyone else been having problems? > I think it's just been really quiet. As to why I am not speaking up is because I haven't read all that many of Misty's books. Just Magic's Promise, When the bough breaks and Born to Run. And no matter how I scrimp and save I haven't been able to afford any more since last summer!! Finding one at a library, even translated, is impossible here in Sweden. Therefore I must quietly ponder over things I do not yet understand, waiting in silence for a topic that I could get involved with. Once one of those pop up, I will not hold back any longer! I'm back... My email server has been down for a couple of days, but I can finally read my mail. I'm so happy ;) Yeah, I think there must have been several email problems happening relatively around the same time. (Not that my server was connected to anything- I'm on the University of Wisconsin server) Heyla to the Newbies! You might want to email Deniz for the Newbiefest at dsarik-+AT+-PO-Box.McGill.CA. Otherwise, I think someone recently reposted it (Cennydd? Was that you? Can't remember...). I also have copies if you need it- jldorn-+AT+-students.wisc.edu. Just please don't post the request to the list- send a personal email. Anyway, the Newbiefest explains stuff like sheep, and abreviations like "ObMisty". ObMisty refers to "Obligatory Misty' content in a post otherwise mostly composed of fluff- the ObMisty legitimizes its right to be on the list :) I also know that Auntie Mel recently reposted Auntie Mel's Rules of Thumb- another good thing for Newbies to get ahold of. BTW, I know you're still out there and there are email problems, but why is everybody lurking? i miss hearing from you guys... Alright- ObMisty.... Or is it that everyone is >trained in how to handle a weapon of some kind? there are only three collegia- Bardic, heraldic, and Healer's. I think that the Heralds are taught strategy and tactics of warfare. I don't have textevd, but Vanyel learned to be a strategist somewhere (They didn't just throw him at the Karsite border cold and inexperienced). Elspeth also got some training if I recall. It's entirely possible that Kero did a lot of teaching of that sort when she could be spared for it. Also, Heralds are well versed in weapon use- in some strange way, they get the kind of training a knight would get. (weapons classes mixed with acedemics). Of course, I tend to think of knight training the way Tamora Pierce does it in Song of the Lioness. Alanna (in those books) had to do weapons work half the day, academics the other half, and during it all had the code of chivalry drilled into her brain. Add training of Mindmagic (and after Elspeth and before Vanyel Mage gift as well), and that's how I picture training in the Heraldic Collegium. The Guard also has training seperately, but I don't think the training is complicated enough to warrant a collegium. I don't think there's a warfare collegium for a couple of reasons- 1- it's not needed because they have the heralds (and the Guard and Kero's merc group), and 2, war is not something that Valdemar wants to encourage. They deal with it when it is forced upon them, but they don't like it. As to the question, "does everyone learn weapon work?" The answer would be, probably not. Heralds do. Bards do because they have to get themselves out of trouble when they sing the wrong thing at the wrong time. I don't think healers do. I don't recall mention of it. A lot of the Blues don't seem to get weapon training either. Landed nobility (like the Ashkevrons) tended to have an armsmaster who trained the children of the nobility, but I don't think the average person has that opportunity unless they go join the Guard. Just MHO ****************** Also, someone mentioned grove borns. Just to answer you- Yes, usually there is only one groveborn- the Monarch's Own's Companion. Elspeth's Companion is groveborn because something decided she needed a special Companion since she was the first of the new Herald Mages. They don't die of old age, and the Monarch's Own just rechooses when his chosen dies. Herald's lives being as they are, Companions are in similar danger a lot of the time. My guess is that there have been quite a few groveborn companions of the Monarch's Own who have died of unnatural causes. ******************** ah well, I've rambled on long enough.
