I think the original question wanted to know what the time difference was in other countries for getting books originally published in the US, but I could be wrong. you know, as a side note- I just have to say that my dorm is starting to smell musty, and it's really bothering me. It's the fault of a rather large fake fur cloak that is currently draped on a chair. I can't wait until the SCA's Mayday event is over, so I can give it back to its owner. Any other SCA types out there? Don't you just love garb? Now, for a way to tie this in... did anyone know that Misty is in the SCA? She is.. lame excuse, eh? Sorry for going off like that. I needed to vent somewhere. Chocolate mint sheep to you all for putting up with me. ObMisty: The way I see it, the Empire isn't really good or bad. (slips in to political scientist mode) The Empire is an exceptionally strong state due to its autonomy. The bad part about this is that the people have little or no say in their government, and therefore can be opressed by any cruel person who happens to get the iron throne. This being said, this also gives the Empire the capacity to provide things like social welfare, and to enforce laws much more efficiently than other states. This seems to be one of the reasons for the incredible efficiency, and technology of the Empire. It utilizes its resources fully because it can. This strength could be used for good if harnessed by someone benevolent. What makes the Empire so bad as a system in practice is the level of corruption. I liked Tremane, but one of the reasons for that was that, while he was by no means a stranger to court intrigue, he chose to not let it corrupt him. Anyone else feel the same way? Well I have to go practice my flute now, but I'll talk to everyone later... I'm procrastinating studying for finals (I have three tomorrow alone) so I decided to contribute to this list of wonderful people which I've had to ignore lately :) I've been thinking, and there is so much about Valdemar that we don't know anything about! We basically know one section of the society, and I seem to recall that from most of our discussions, we'd like stories about different aspects, but I don't remember any thoughts about Valdemar/Velgarth stories that had nothing to do with Heralds. I'm really curious on how Misty envisions the average person without Heraldic intervention. Like another bunch of short stories about people even from the other countries that just happen to take place in Velgarth; stories that would really help in rounding out the world. Oh, I'm a New Englander too. A Connecticut native attending UCONN that comes complete with, as I've been told many times, a very recognizable accent (I just don't hear it.) I sencond that!!! I want to read a story about the semi'common man. I love all the other stories, don't get me wrong but i want to know what a day in the life of the common person is in Valdamar. Misty is so good with creating cultures and religions that make up a vibrent society with real depth. That is one of the many things i like about reading her works. How many of you out there have wanted to see more in the way of developing that? A story about someone from the empier, a view we have not seen yet, like one of the lesser lords or ladies. Or how about a story about someone from Karse or Iftel? A mage from the Vail or a scout rider for the Shin'a'in? Not some one superspecial like a Harald or Swordsworn but just your avrage Joe who gets into just one too many scapes? I think some good ideas for stories would be Sun and Shadow, what ever haped to them? There are hints to that but what happend once they were hearalds? Or how about Skif? He has quite a story to tell! Even after he left the streets. How about a story about the Kyree? Just them in there society? Or more about the Tavardy (sp? I mean the people with feathers) she never really talked much about that. . . ::Looks around and quitely slides of the sope box and fades off into shadow...:: Thanx for listening to my speech here. . . (that's like .02$ but we all know that things are more expensive here in California.) Here's my spiel... We've all heard the saying absolute power corrupts. Any dictatorship like the empire may start out with the best interests of the people at heart, but sooner or later the slime of the earth will climb out from under their rocks and try to grab that power for their own. After all who wouldn't want to be absolute ruler of the largest government the world knows? Now, you can build a series of checks into the government to keep the worst of the scum from grabbing power, but at the expense of efficiency. Or you could leave the matter in the hands of the Companions, which seems to work in Vlademar. At this point the people who run the empire don't care about good or evil, they just care about keeping their power. If they have to do some good then so be it. Of course we have only seen the empire in the middle of a crisis, we don't know how it would react normally. Vlademar might just have been a new dukedom in the empire if not for the storms. Just wait until the mage storms blow over and then we'll see how the empire's true colors. Vlademar might just have been a new dukedom in the empire if not for the storms. Just wait until the mage storms blow over and then we'll see how the empire's true colors. I agree, after all the only reason Melles left Tremaine alone was because that was the only way he could think of to get the people, esp. the army behind him. He just needed something to make him look good, after all think about how ruthless he was in other way- like putting the assasin in a baby's crib. I would also like to know how all that power that was invested into the iron throne (when Charliss died) has affected or changed it. I would also like to know more about Iftel, the common people as well as the priests of Vkandis. Solaris said in the end of Storms that the Sun-lord had decreed some Very strange things there. OK like what? Also, isn't magic supposed to change now that the Storms has passed? I geuss that's about it for now. Does that bring up more conversation?? >Well, that it my thoughts. I do agree with you that the person effects how much absolute power will corrupt that person. However, I'm -not- sure Tremane would have made a good Emperor. Tremane changes, throughout the Storms trilogy. In Storm Warning, we see a good-hearted (maybe) man tied to the efficiency of the Empire. He's always for the political expedient, though he does well enough by his manor, apparently. Anyways, his sending the 'little birds' proves his loyalty to expediency and a mindless cause for political power. Later, though, most notably after his encounters with Karal and Solaris, he changes a great deal (a permanent second stage truth spell will do that, y'know?). I know he does regret his sending the assassin, but I can't help but wonder if he would feel anything if he were still in the Empire and safe. Anyhow, that's all speculation anyways. Melles, now, I think HE will make a good Emperor... I don't like him and I think he's scum, but he will probably rule well. Under an 'ordinary' Emperor's rule, the people of the Empire MUST be somewhat well off, or they would object to everything he does, and enough 'everyday Joes' can pull down even the best of armies. Melles will probably be an ordinary Emperor. And I kinda found myself admiring him, to be honest... Maybe he DID do all those things that helped the people because he wanted to take the Iron Throne, but at least he realized that he needed the people's approval and calm if he wanted to get his Empire intact. Too many power-trippy people don't get that and kill WAY too many in their stagger to the top. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, and hope, of course, that Misty decides to develop him further (well, okay, *I*'m hoping that, but I understand that not everyone will). But before Karal and Solaris he is already regretting the assasin and leading rescue parties to get strayed village children. Not the act of a cold hearted ruler. He truly cares for those he is responsible for. > Melles, now, I think HE will make a good Emperor... I don't like him and I think > he's scum, but he will probably rule well. ... I agree that Melles will make a good Emperor, for one thing he realizes that the well being of the people is important, even if only so they support him! Hopefully Misty will write more in that time period. It does seem to me that she left a bit hanging. For example, what happens to Selenay's twins? Aren't they getting close to being Chosen? And what about Talia's boy, she barely mentions him. I like to continue to hear about my favorite characters and their offspring.
