I don't know about Vanyel's age, I always thought him around 44, considering that slightly more than 10 years have passed between MPromise and MPrice, and that Stefen is around 2 years older than Medren, who is 19. besides, Medren was around 8 when Van discovered he was gifted, so that gives additional clues. I don't have the books with me, but I seem to remember Savil saying at the beginning of MPromise that Vanyel was 36-38. Can anyone help me with that? Anyone? >Shaina/Ravenwing and Mica Well, think about this... (possible spoilers) When An'desha was trying to access Ma'ar's memories of previous incarnations, he had to concentrate and search through possibly hundreds or even thousands of different people. I mean, it had been who knows how long since the original Ma'ar, and there were lots and lots of memories there. The way I think of it, is that Ma'ar's incarnations each have access to the pool of memory, but some things are harder to dig out because they aren't accessed as much. Like this Herald business...Leareth knew about Heralds, but probably none of the others did. So if Falconsbane decided to sit down and search and search through all his accumlated knowledge to find out about the Heralds, he probably could. But he didn't take the time to do it. Of course, there's always the possiblity that Misty just plain messed up, but I prefer this explanation over that. :) Wyvern mschreib-+AT+-cougarnet.byu.edu http://www.byu.edu/~mschreib ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 1997 20:19:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Mom2AnN-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Valdemaran Time Line- muddle Message-ID: <970504201942_907974653-+AT+-emout03.mail.aol.com> Just had to get my 2 cents worth in here - in S&S where Tarma and Kethry first appeared, Kethry was maybe early 20's, Tarma was younger, maybe late teens. Well, first of all, Falconsbane actually *says* he was. I rationalize it this way -- because of his traumatic experience between the second and third Winds books (I can never remember the order of the titles on that particular trilogy, for some reason), he has already lost quite a bit of his sanity and power. This is mentioned in the third book. It wouldn't surprise me if he had lost some of his memory as well. Besides that trauma, I think it's possible that he didn't always retain complete knowledge from one incarnation to the next. Has anyone here read Stephen King's "Desperation"? Spoilers ahoy! =2E =2E =2E =2E S P O I L E R S P A C E =2E =2E =2E =2E In "Desperation", the main villain is an evil spirit who inhabits human bodies and burns them out after only a few days. However, this spirit gains knowledge and abilities according to the body it inhabits, and loses much of that knowledge/ability when it moves to a new "host". I think Ma'ar may have had that limitation to a lesser extent. Specifically, he remembers his first life (as Ma'ar) clearly no matter what -- hence the Gryphon obsession -- but only retains bits and pieces of his memories from other lives. I don't have the books with me, but I seem to > remember Savil saying at the beginning of MPromise that Vanyel was 36-38. > Can anyone help me with that? > Shaina/Ravenwing and Mica No, no, no! Merden was twelve in MPromise. Also, Jisa was 6 in MPromise, and 15 in MPrice. So there was a 9 year difference between MPromise and MPrice, which would make Van 37 in MPrice (since Van himself stated that he's 28 in MPromise). And Stef was 17, two years younger than Merden, rather than 2 years older. That's why Van was so reluctant to go to bed with Stef, because Stef was so *young*. And I think Van stayed about 37 to 38 in the whole MPrice book. And yes, this topic had been done to death, but who cares. (Sorry, can't quote) Whoever that mentioned that sentence that appeared twice in MPrice, I was really angry over that too (you know the one with Stef almost too shy to ask whether Van missed having a lifebond when making love or something). So my solution was to find my bottle of correction fluid and whited it out (and no, I am *not* trying to promote anyone's merchandise). Now, my book doesn't have that annoying double sentence, but have a patch of white stuff. Cool, right? Well, that's my two cents. Bye and take care. I'm a huge Darkover fan, and have read almost every book that MZB has written, but I guess this must've evaded my eye. Is it a new book? When did it come out? Was it published by DAW Books? I want to have that book! :) > worlds or groups of characters. But, has Misty had any short stories > published that weren't in the Velgarth world (did she have a Darkovan one > published?) Oh, there was that book of stories all on the same theme Yes, she has had quite a many short stories of Darkover published in MZB's Darkover anthologies... but that was a few years ago. There's no more anthologies, though. *pout* Misty also wrote 'Rediscovery' with MZB, and there's been rumours that MZB's newest novel, 'Exile's Song', was a collaboration with another writer, who has been speculated to be Misty, but that's not sure. Regan wrote: > There are maps in the books Talia, and its named Velgarth(Now why its named > that is what id like to know) Yes, there're maps in at least one book in each trilogy. As to why Velgarth is named Velgarth... hmmm... now, just think why our world is called Earth or Terra or Tellus or whatever... there's your explanation. :) Petrie -- ****************************************************************** * Petri O Peltonen * Animals, * * Helsinki School of Economics * who are not penguins, * * Administration Office * can only wish they were. * * ppeltone-+AT+-hkkk.fi * - Chicago Reader 10/15/82 - * ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 May 1997 05:13:51 PDT From: "Joe Lackey" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re:Re: Magnum opus con Message-ID: <199705051213.FAA09447-+AT+-f2.hotmail.com> >Heyla Joe, >Just a quick question, What is Magnum opus con? It is a science fiction, fantasy, role-playing, party-till-you-puke type of convention. I've been to two of them and they are great. This is really getting off the discussion, but I just wanted to mention that there are countless ways of getting out of it in Sweden. Until the 80's it was mandatory for all, no matter what, but nowadays you can claim that you have bad eyesight, or say that you're against all violence, or say that you have to continue your education without break for some reason, so only the people that want to, or feel that it's their duty actually serve. But there are still a lot of people that feel it's right for there to be such a law (I was talking to some guys about it), that it is one's duty when living in a country.
