He lost his mind for God's sake! He wasn't thinking straight, he just wanted revenge, but at the same time he wasn't really thinking of his actions. Ok, so it was all pre-meditated, but his mind and thought processes weren't there. The fact that he showed any remorse at all belies true evil. IMHO, evil is constant, premeditated behaviour, that the evil-doer gets some sick enjoyment out of, (ie, Krebain, Leareth) not a one-off occurence followed by immediate remorse. On a lighter note; Adrian Paul and Stan Kirsch for Van and 'Lendel? (guess whoever suggested this is a fellow Highlander fan so!) I don't think so though. Admittedly, AP is damned sexy, but he's just too meaty for a convincing Van. SK looks the part, but, again, I dunno whether he could manage the character Leonardo di Caprio? Now there is a gifted piece of pseudo-casting. he's certainly the most perfect Tylendel I can think of. Somebody mentioned David Lee Someone-or-other, on the basis that he certainly looks the part, well, I dunno 'buot anyone else, but who I would have as Van, based on both looks and character ability, is Michael Praed of "Robin of Sherwood". He is the spitting image of Van, if one goes by front-cover illustrations (they must have been based on him, they're too similar). And so okay, he'd really only be able to play the Van of the last two books, due to his age, but still! Ok, I have made this into far too big a thing! I'm sorry Shoestring (it's not supposed to be a Misty-ish/Herald-ish name, in case someone thinks I'm just really stupid!) Ps. I'm new, so if I've broken some protocol or other, I' m really, really sorry. Just point it out and it won't happen again. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 11:36:09 +0100 (BST) From: Melanie Dymond Harper To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Russian folklore Message-ID: <199705141036.LAA12545-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> Those of you who liked _Firebird_ and have access to a very good bookshop ought to have a look for Arthur Ransome's _Old Peter's Russian Tales_. Ransome, who also wrote the _Swallows and Amazons_ books, was a journalist in Russia in, I believe, the 1930s, and did some research into Russian folklore while he was there; the tales are written as though told by a grandfather to his grandchildren, as short stories. The reason I specify a very good bookshop is because (1) I'm not sure they were ever published outside the UK, (2) my copy is about twenty years old and I don't know whether it's currently in print anywhere. Tashir was being chosen by "Ghost". Lores was certainly guilty of ignorance, but he also says he doesn't have mindspeech, and doesn't hear Jenna well. Apparently he was willing to be swept along by other's opinions as well, which may also qualify him for a lack of confidence in making his own decisions. As I remember, though, evil has much to do with intent, and he believed he was protecting the people by trapping Tashir and trying to keep Ghost away from them; he seemed to be horrified when his attention was directed to the state Jenna was in. If his intentions had been to hurt another companion and his chosen, in my opinion, Jenna would not have been torn so badly about what to do; she would have repudiated him. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 07:15:16 -0400 (EDT) From: FireWurm-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Favorite Scenes/Xena/Stuff Message-ID: <970514071516_1256302499-+AT+-emout17.mail.aol.com> The great pigions of on-line dared the fires to bring this message: Dawnsong Said: > Although I'm starting to think I should just read the entire book to > everyone in my group.... As long as you try to do right by everyone and think of yourself last you are doing good. Evil of course is the exact oppisite of that. My question is why do we consider certain types of fantasy writing to be Tolkienish when Tolkien drew from so many different sources for his own mythology? He drew from Celtic, Norse, Greek, German, some ideas from christianity and I'm probably missing many others. My point is why not call it Celtic style of writing or Norse or anything else you like? Why do people get so hung up on the Tolkien tradition of writing? I hope this doesn't sound like a flame, that's not my intention. These are just questions I have about fantasy writing. > May I make a request? Based on the really unpleasant religion thread >that > occured only a few months ago, could we confine religious discussions >to > the religions of Misty's worlds and leave out the statements of >personal > religious beliefs in the real world? I'll have to agree with Cennyyd on this one. It would be very interesting to hear about everyone's belief's but it seems to just cause all kinds of trouble so we probably better leave it alone and just discuss the religions in Misty's books. I really can't think of anyone I would like to see play Tarma.(and when did Cher learn to act, she hasn't even learned to sing yet). For who ever said that Hurcleas(sp) and Xena show a total disregard for anceint Greek culture I would be forced to say that the shows are less about that time period and more about now. They tell stories that teach us lessons that we need to know at this moment much as the mythology that it is based on taught lessons to the Greeks. Also I find the mythology in it to be the most accurate(though not totaly) to the real mythologys that I have ever seen in a movie or series. It is the first one that I was not totaly dissapointed in the way the Greek gods were portrayed. All for now. I said that it's hard for any fantasy writer to escape the traditional Anglo/Celtic/Nordic/whatever fantasy tradition that goes back to Tolkien AND BEYOND. Tolkien certainly didn't invent the genre, but he did popularize it tremendously. Before he came along and his books were such a hit, the audience for "sword and sorcery" was relatively small. To quote Gardner Dozois' preface to his collection _Modern_Classics_ _of_Fantasy_, "... it is certainly hard to overestimate Tolkien's influence -- almost every subsequent fantasist was hugely influenced by Tolkien, even, haplessly, those who didn't like him and reacted against him ..." I doubt that there has been a single fantasy writer in the last 40 years that hasn't been influenced by him just a little. Anyway, since when has simply saying that someone's work belongs to the same tradition as someone else's the same as saying that said work is derivative or a rip off? Of course Tolkien wasn't the first fantasy writer, not by a long shot, and of course he was drawing on ancient traditions in his fiction. Misty's work is very original and I certainly am not trying to say that she is just a rip-off of Tolkien like so many fantasy writers today are. But she's no goddess, and like any writer of any genre, she cannot help being influenced by what came before her. However, I wasn't trying to say that it's "nearly impossible" to escape Tolkien, you'll notice, but rather that it's difficult to escape the WESTern European tradition which is, I think you'll all agree, epitomized by Tolkien. She did accomplish this rather successfully, IMO, with _Firebird_. I wonder if anyone could guilt-trip them into it, considering they "gave away" Dr. Who.... *smile* ******* Movie casting- I don't think using Adrian Paul and Stan Kirsch would work (as much as I love Highlander -- Going through 5th season withdrawal as we speak..... stupid *add your own explicitave* TV station....) The age difference between the two of them is too big for Van and Tylendel and I have to agree with the comment that AP doesn't really look that much like Van, body-wise. Next point - With those two, there'd be a lot of disappointed people if you didn't get Elizabeth Gracen to play a part and who could she play? *shrugs* I don't think Xena could quite cut it as Tarma or Kethry, as far as looks go. (Sorry, that's all I can judge on, like I said, I don't watch the show.) And Bruce Campbell as Skif? (That'd be one way to get my best friend interested.... BC's one of his favorite actors.....) ******** Kris as mage - *flipping through AofQ as we speak* "everything seemed to be illuminated from within, living things the most." Talia looking for Ylsa through Kris. (pg. 308, paperback) I haven't looked in the other two books yet, but is this the way normal Farsight works? ******* Darkwind being Chosen - *shrugs* He's not evil and he has some mind-magic (otherwise how could he Mindspeak Elspeth?) Maybe there's some reason that we can't see? I don't think that a hertasi would be Chosen though. Valdemar's not ready to accept a non-human Herald (even if they would pretty much have to be assigned to the Palace due to the cold) and it seems that acceptance as an authority figure would be a factor.... ******* FireWurm - I'm in the process of ordering a tape or two.... unfortunately, I live in Canada, don't get to cons very often (and they're always scifi anyways), and I don't have a credit card. *smile* (But I can think of a good lyric or two that I've seen in the books. And I did one of them for a class assignment too - an audition for a play I was in.) And, no, not *too* insane..... ; } ******* Can I add my vote to the discussion about RL religions as opposed to Velgarth religions? No... please. I don't believe in any specific religion myself and it's bad enough that I keep getting caught in chat-discussions with a narrow-minded twit who reads the Bible and nothing else.... I'm new and you can call me Peregrine. I've been reading Misty for ages, but just recently got on the net:) It's confusing at first. Anyway I signed on the other day, but AP tests called and this is my first posting. Now that that's out of the way... ******** I don't have a clue who start the Kris is mage-gifted thing, but it's an interesting idea. I would think that far-sight doesn't normally let you see mind-magic power, shields, etc; it's just the ability to see far away, right? The problem is that there are a few times where it mentions that mage-gift doesn't let you see mind-magic, because other mages allways got trashed by what they didn't see coming. Beside, didn't it say in MW that Darkwind had to do something extra to see mind-magic. My last argument is this: remember how it always says everyone has more than just one gift? Could Kris just have sort of a secons-sight that lets him see the mind-powers and that is why he was considered the bestof the teachers for the gifts, because he had that ability? ******** I agree with the belief that a companion wouldn't Chose an evil person. I also believe that Ty wasn't evil, just insane with grief and wanting revenge. The thing is that everyone has the potential to do evil, remember in AotQ Talia almost got smeared by Yfandes in Sorrows when she let loose with her gift and almost killed Kris and the companions. The problem is that many Heralds must be somewhat borderline cases. Somewhere I think it mentioned that companions chose those with gifts who might be dangerous to others without the companion bond to give that person a very strong bond to provide them stability (like Van). Someone please tell me that I remember correctly, and my mind isn't going? ******** BTW I did get that really wierd message, whoever asked. What the *sensored phrase* was that? ******** Darkwind being chosen *thoughtful ponder* Ithink it didn't happen because Darkwind already had a strong calling (all Talyedras heal the land right?) and he wasn't Valdamaran. His gifts were awake, controlled, and he was very stable emotionally. He also had his bond with Vree already; that is kinda equivalant to the Herald-Companion thing, right? *Hmm more pondering* Could it be that the bond requires a "channel" like other gifts and that you can't have more than one of that type (I'm considering life-bonds to be different)? ******** Anyway that's it. I'm off to San Diego tomorrow and if the past days are any indication the mail pile will take hours to go through... Don't stop though, please don't stop *big smile* Hello again and am I doing this right or this there some kinda a format? Maybe they're in love with her strong character! A lot of people (many of them women, in my experience) seem to think that prettiness and sexiness are the same thing. They're not! In fact, there seems to be little correlation between them. A lot of the women I consider sexy aren't "pretty" by 20th century American/European standards, and many of the women that are best described as "pretty" don't turn me on at all. (Yes, I'm a hetero male.) As for Xena -- I've never seen the show (except a few commercials, which I don't count), so I can't offer a real personal opinion. Based on descriptions, though, she's probably someone I'd consider quite sexy. Yes, strong and confident women are attractive! Sorry for not braiding this with my previous message, but I'm not in the habit of doing so, since it's a rare occasion when I want to send more than one letter to the same list on the same day. :-) Raspberry sheep to all. ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 20:27:13 -0400 (EDT) From: Greg Wooledge To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Heralds gone bad Message-ID: On Wed, 14 May 1997, Ken Hyde wrote: > Of course, this depends on the idea that evil and good are not "essential" > properties of human identity. (It's my suspicion that a great many people feel this way, although I wouldn't want to try to guess a percentage.) > Further evidence can be found in Tylendel's repudiation and > "redemption." When he is "doing" a great evil, Gala repudiates him. > However, after he has come to his senses and committed suicide in remorse > (doing), the other Companions ring the Death Bell for him, suggesting that > he is once again one of the good-guys. I'd like to make one minor point. I don't think that his suicide can be considered a "good action", or that his suicide marked him as one of the "good-guys", or that his suicide somehow caused a reversal of his repudiation. Instead, I think that he "came to his senses" and felt remorse -- and it was this honest feeling that caused him to be re-accepted. Unfortunately, his remorse and loss (he caused the death of his Companion as well as the death of at least one person) were so great that he could not bear the pain, and he committed suicide. If Tylendel hadn't killed himself, I think he could have been re-Chosen if he could have healed from all the emotional damage he had suffered. The Companions seem to be pretty forgiving of their Heralds' failings. Also remember that Valdemar was suffering a shortage of Herald-Mages at the time, due to the early attrition Leareth was causing. The Companions probably didn't know about Leareth at the time, but I bet they would have had some "hunch" or ForeSight-premonition that salvaging a Herald-Mage would have been worth just about any effort. I'll back that statement up by offering Vanyel's Choosing as evidence. At the time, Vanyel didn't feel any of the loyalty we expect in a Herald (and was also an emotional wreck, having recently lost his lifebonded); but Yfandes was able to recognize his potential to become a Herald-Mage early enough to Choose Vanyel and thwart his suicide attempts. ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 1997 19:14:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Lydia Hales To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: US/questions-Storm Series/ Message-ID: On Sun, 11 May 1997, Thomas & Kristine Jackson wrote: > Lydia Hales wrote: > > > Trmane does appear to be the exception to the rule in the Empire, but he > > did order the assisinations of the envoys, so obviously he is not totally > > above Empire politics.
