I'd like to make one minor point. I don't think that his suicide can be considered a "good action", or that his suicide marked him as one of the "good-guys", or that his suicide somehow caused a reversal of his repudiation. Instead, I think that he "came to his senses" and felt remorse -- and it was this honest feeling that caused him to be re-accepted. Unfortunately, his remorse and loss (he caused the death of his Companion as well as the death of at least one person) were so great that he could not bear the pain, and he committed suicide. If Tylendel hadn't killed himself, I think he could have been re-Chosen if he could have healed from all the emotional damage he had suffered. The Companions seem to be pretty forgiving of their Heralds' failings. ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- >> I agree about the suicide. Never is that a "good" option or a way to gave back goodness. I'm new and you can call me Peregrine. I've been reading Misty for ages, but just recently got on the net:) It's confusing at first. Anyway I signed on the other day, but AP tests called and this is my first posting. Now that that's out of the way... >>>Hi Peregrine. Nice choice of name. Glad to have another "bird-of-prey" around. ******** I agree with the belief that a companion wouldn't Chose an evil person. I also believe that Ty wasn't evil, just insane with grief and wanting revenge. The thing is that everyone has the potential to do evil, remember in AotQ Talia almost got smeared by Yfandes in Sorrows when she let loose with her gift and almost killed Kris and the companions. The problem is that many Heralds must be somewhat borderline cases. Somewhere I think it mentioned that companions chose those with gifts who might be dangerous to others without the companion bond to give that person a very strong bond to provide them stability (like Van). Someone please tell me that I remember correctly, and my mind isn't going? >>>>This is an interesting thread to follow.......I'll have to reread the books and work on this. Maybe someone knows more about this. ******** Darkwind being chosen *thoughtful ponder* Ithink it didn't happen because Darkwind already had a strong calling (all Talyedras heal the land right?) and he wasn't Valdamaran. His gifts were awake, controlled, and he was very stable emotionally. He also had his bond with Vree already; that is kinda equivalant to the Herald-Companion thing, right? *Hmm more pondering* Could it be that the bond requires a "channel" like other gifts and that you can't have more than one of that type (I'm considering life-bonds to be different)? >>>>Being a non-Valdermaran doesn't stop anyone from being chosen. But I think u are write about having a strong calling. Being a Herald means total commitment to Valdermar and its people. I don't think a person with another calling can give that kind of a commitment. As to the bonding with a bondbird, somehow, I always get the impression that this bond is not as strong as the herald-companion bond.......this is based upon the fact that while the bondbirds are intelligent and resourceful, they are not really "avators". Remember when Elspeth met Quentin at his school in WoF, he was surprised to see the Companions. He thought them as "spirits" which is what "avators" is really all about. Vandkis has his avators in the form of the Firecats (Hhmm....I wonder they have the same bonding with the people they are attached to as the Herald-Companion bonding......probably not, since cats are more temperamental than horses....no offence to the Firecats and Companions) and the Goddess hers. So the bonding just got to be different if not stronger. I don't think bonds require channels...it is not a gift. ******** On Sun, 11 May 1997, Thomas & Kristine Jackson wrote: > It's hard to use absolute terms like good and evil when talking > politics. I really don't know whether your comments are right or wrong.....maybe someone taking political science can answer......but I do know that there are some basic good and evil(moral values) which applies to all, even nations......like cooperation between neighbours, not to backstab your friends etc. Of course, another one to take note of is that intentions counts, whether you are acting as an individual or you are making a decision for your people. In this case, Selenay's intention was good.....the action may be drastic but the good outweighs the evil. ********* Little Alex wrote this : For me, I have to place my faith in the basic 'goodness' of humans. Because without that, my system will fall apart. It's not a matter of opinion to me, it's a matter of life and death. For if human 'nature,' meaning my nature, isn't good, and I don't have 'ten commandements' from some god figure to tell me what to do, why shouldn't I go ahead and do all evil things I want to do? Why shouldn't I just rob the bank to get money, or hijack a car that I sees and like? Why shouldn't I? But I don't do those things, why? It's not 'cause it's inconvenient for me to do so, but because my basic nature is good. I *don't* want to do those things because these acts will hurt other people. I have to place my trust in my own goodness, and in this act, place also my trust on the goodness on all human beings. Well, if that isn't a ramble, I don't know what is. Sheeps to anyone pissed about this mess. >>>>Yep, ALex. I agree with what you said about human nature being essentially good. We have our moments of weakness no doubt but I would like to think that there is a strength in all of us to rise again out of the moments and continue our journey forward on this Earth, having taken lessons from those moments when we "fell from grace". I think in many ways Misty's writings are much about us as about the characters she brought in being.....who wouldn't be able to identify with Van when he was torn between helping 'Lendel and "ratting" on him. How many of us have had some difficulties with over-protective parents like Elspeth's? And Selenay having to decide on killing Ancar to prevent the deaths of others.....have we never been in that kind of situation ( to a lesser or greater degree) where we have to choose which is the lesser of two evils? ************** Sorry about the runaway thoughts........Chocolate coated sheeps to everyone that I may have offended. I mean he has allready stated that Valdemar is his home. Now that the magic is spread out and no longer in ley lines and nodes and other such things(though it will return eventually) couldn't the mages start making engery pools again? Wouldn't this even contribute to the reformation of ley lines and nodes by creating small imbalences in the magical field? Also, remember Tremane stated in SB that maybe the Herelds would be welcome in Hardorn. If I were him I would be making laws to make it so all future monarchs had to be Heralds and maybe even ask for something like the Queen's own. While this would not make one country it would make the alliance extra powerful. Wind to thy wings. I'm in the middle of packing up and moving, and preparing for my trip to NYC (leaving tomorrow night!) for fun in the Big Apple, so I haven't been very good about posting as soon as the problems started cropping up. First off: there has been a resurgence of one-liners, and people quoting entire messages when they only use 5 lines of response. Do it again after my post reaches the list, and I will start naming names. We consider this very rude and wasting of bandwidth. There are people out there who pay for their e-mail by byte, and if we are forcing them off the list by unneccesary quoting, that is inacceptable. Next. Spoilers. Sorrowheart (Joe Lackey) just sent a message with a blank subject where he pretty much spoiled the ending of Storm Breaking, which is still in spoilers, because it hasn't come out in paperback yet. If you are going to say anything about the plot of a book under spoilers, you must *put it in the subject* and add spoiler space to your message. If there hasn't been a recent example of spoiler space, just trawl through the archives. Also, please, please, *please* put subjects in your messages. When the subject is blank, it confuses people, especially if they don't have filters which can sort by sender. Religion. We have already had one of our respected list elders (Cennydd) ask politely that any discussion about rl religion not take place on list, due to some unpleasant experiences we have had in the past. We have also had people agree with the plea. Please, don't flaunt them by posting about religion with one sentence at the end saying, "I'm sorry if I'm offending people by posting here." Obviously, we've had bad experiences in the past, and would just like to avoid going through that whole mess again. If you *really* want to know what happened, surf through the archives until you come across posts from Josh Albers, and read all the messages, the things he said, the things others said, and just how dirty the list got. Then read how many people left the list in disgust. That was decidedly *not* pleasant. You might think you're not him and wouldn't make that kind of comment, but that showed that there are all sorts of people around here, even though you wouldn't expect certain types on a Misty discussion list, and people say odd things when they're in the mood or don't care for consequences. ****** About that Strange Message... Ravenwing accidentally posted to the wrong list, and just hasn't realized it yet, and the gibberish at the end was some kind of attachment. PLEASE don't waste more bandwidth by posting the *whole blurb* of gibberish. Especially twice, if you only added one line. If you want to ask about that, you can just quote one line. Or better yet, why don't you ask her yourself? ****** Angeline said: > 'Lendel : Leonardo DiCaprio ( my sis was watching R&J, and she > remarked that he looked like a gay!) Just what do you mean by that? How does someone look like "a gay"? Do you mean he seems gay, or that he seems like a gay person? Because right now, that wording seems to take away the humanity of whoever you're referring to, by replacing person with a lifestyle. I might seem to be making mountains out of molehiles, but wording choice is *very* important in this day and age, and I'd rather not sit back and allow some slight typo that offends me (and possibly any other queer members on this list, I won't speak for them) go by and possibly perpetuate a misconception. Angeline, could you please clarify what you meant by that? People have nominated and denominated Adrian Paul for Vanyel, but I was wondering nobody has put him in *my* personal favorite spot (where I know quite a few other people like him, too). Adrian Paul, in my opinion, looks like a great Darkwind. AAAaaaacck!!! I joined the casting thread! Bad, bad, bad me :) Well, I'm not gonna afflict you all with taking the one show I watch (Lois and Clark) and trying to cast all the actors/actresses into Velgarth... though it would be interesting to see what would happen if their characters found themselves in Velgarth... hmmmmmmm. (Yes, I'm a hetero male.) There is no real clear defination. I feel the same way re: Men. I may consider someone attractive, and yet not think of them of sexy. Usually, it is the personality of the person that determines if I think of them as sexy. ------------------------------- Peregrine wrote >Darkwind being chosen *thoughtful ponder* Ithink it didn't happen because Darkwind already had a strong calling (all Talyedras heal the land right?) and he wasn't Valdamaran. Perhaps the reason that Darkwind was not chosen was again to show that not all "good" people are heralds. The same thing as with Natoli, her gifts and talent lay in other areas but this did not make her any less important or VITAL to the alliance. I also think that it would be almost impossible for a hertasi to be chosen, How could they ride with a tail? Not that they aren't good, or even talented because we know that they can be mages, I'm just talking about physical impossibility. My vote is David Bowie. He did such a marvelous job as the Goblin King in Labyrinth. I also think that Patrick Stewart would make a good Lord Withen. Misty herself would make a good Queen Selenay. My pick for Tarma is the filker Leslie Fish. She would be perfect for the role. Wish I could send a picture. Well, that's my opinion.
