Most mages didn't even think of looking for it because they didn't expect it. Could be wrong though. :) Actually, I think it's a possibility that Kris was mage-gifted- that description of living things glowing most (don't have my books, but someone posted it already) sounds a lot like mage gift to me. I always got the impression that people with farsight had the ability to get a picture of something far away, and therefore tell where it is. That's why Farsight and Fetching worked so well together- The Farseer could focus on the object and get an idea of location so that the Fetcher could latch onto the object and transport it telekinetically. (See Dirk and Elspeth's joint rescue of Talia in AFall- Elspeth focused on Talia in order to discover where she was, and got an image of Talia in her cell, then Dirk Fetched her.) I didn't think that this necessarily meant that energy patterns were visible- that seems a lot closer to a mage's ability to see ley-lines and life-force. ********************************************* Ah yes, the time-honored subject of casting. D=E9javu all over again. That's ok- it's still fun.=20 First off- Xena. Lucy Lawless is in fact normally a blonde- they die her hair for the show. On that basis, I think she'd be an incredibly cool Kerowyn. No Tarma or Kethry though. Here are some of my picks- Darkwind: Adrian Paul Tylendel: Christian Bale? (I put Leo down for Stef) Stef: Leonardo DiCaprio Kero: Lucy Lawless Kethry: Michelle Pfieffer Falconsbane: Christopher Walkin (you just have to get him to play really evil people-he does it so well) Dirk: David Duchovny Skif: Ethan Hawke Talia (AofQ): Claire Danes Kris:Cary Elwes Eldan: Val Kilmer Daren: Mandy Patinkin=20 Vanyel: Johnny Depp (I still think he could pull it off-he's an incredible actor and he's certainly good looking) Actually, does anyone still have the casting list from Heather (What-she-said)?. I think that in Arrows of the Queen when Talia started the oreantation (really bad spelling there) class they asked if anyone was ever repudated by thier Compainion. That dude (um can't remember name really sorry but he was discribed as a hound) said that it only happed once and then due to special sercomstances. Someone said that Compainions were really forgiving of thier Hearalds falts, I agree with that too. . . . IMHO if they wern't we would have very few Hearalds to read about and way to many ex-Hearalds killing themselves off. Some one else also sugested that they might of re-Chosen 'Lendle, I beg to differ. A Companion bond, that is a true Compaion bond, not one of the Temp ones, is to special. I don't know if that makes any sence but ya. . . . _____Darkwind as a Herald____ TG said: > But Elspeth was already a Herald and yet she got "enrolled" as Wingsib like > Van and Savil. Well if you remember, when Elispeth made the oath it said that it would be if it did not interfear with previouse vows, i.e. her vow to her Compainion, to the Circle and to her Contry. So she didn't precisly have the same responsabilities of Darkwind. Also Darkwind has Vree. _____Casting____ Deniz said : > People have nominated and denominated Adrian Paul for Vanyel, but I was > wondering nobody has put him in *my* personal favorite spot (where I know > quite a few other people like him, too). My guess would be that, as Yfandes said, all Companions can speak to anyone, but only if its REAL important (the rescue of Talia). However they won't force themselves on someone who doesn't have that gift. It would be too intrusive, like a mental rape, even if it was the person they are bonded with. One other thing in retrospect...I believe the only Herald who CAN NOT mind speak her Companion is Talia. It is mentioned as a not unheard of thing (AofQ Teren says "Even if you never hear your Companion again, they speak to you when you're Chosen" or something like that) but all of the Heralds that are mentioned can mind speak their Companions. He even have the right color of hair. Also, he can play a queer character (or gay, though someone told me that gay is more for guys and queer is more 'inclusive') really well... Anyone who saw a movie called 'Total Eclipse' can see that. (of course I saw it... I watch everything that have Leo in it) But have anyone thought about River Phoenix? Anyone? He would be such an good actor to play Tylendel. His sophisticated innocence, his haunted expressions at times, they just make my heart ache. Too bad he died!!! And he definitely have no qualms playing gay characters either. He turned his character, Mike, in the movie 'My Own Private Idaho' queer when the character was originally ambiguous at best. posting rules: Sorry, Cennydd, but I have to do a 'what you said.' People, *braid*!!! Also, no *one-liners*!!! Most important, please have a subject heading!!! I know I shouldn't be yelling, especially when I have done the exact wrong things. But when I am at the receiving end, I finally realize how annoying it is! So, remember to read Auntie Mel's Rules of Thumb, and follow these rules! Mindspeech and Companions: Herald Jess said: At the end of Magic's Price Yfandes states to Stefen "..I can Bespeak anyone I choose to, it's one of the abilities Companions try not to use if there's any way around it." Stefen's gifts lay in the empathy department and not mindspeech. Now based on that information why can't Rolan, who is a Grove born Companion, Mindspeak Talia, his chosen. And why can Yfandes speak to Stefen who isn't even a Herald or her chosen? The last-last question was weird, considering the quote answered it. Also more evidence on Companions able to Bespeak anyone is that of Sayvil, Kero's Companion. Sayvil keeps talking to everyone that have mindspeech, and Kero commented that pretty soon, Sayvil is gonna start Bespeaking to the unGifted and scare the heck out of the person. Rolan should be also able to Bespeak anyone at all, since he's groveborn and all the Companions have the ability already. The reason that Rolan *can't* mindspeak to Talia, then, is there's no such reason. The darling Misty, unfortunately, messed up. Remember, AotQ is Misty first book, there must be tons that she's unsatisfied with, or just plain forgot after a few more series. So don't blame her and just accept the inconsistency and shut up. Darkwind's not being Chosen and whether he has lifebonded: A lot of people thought that DW and Elspeth were lifebonded. I wished it. But it's not true. It's just very strong *love*bond. Misty herself said so. She said that she wanted to write a couple without a lifebond--a regular couple once in a while. So, that's that. It's settled. Darkwind can't be Chosen because he is still more committed to his Vale than he could ever be to Vlademar. He's like me. I love the States and all that (I moved here 7 yrs ago, and I'm definitely staying here), but if there's a fight between the States and my original home, Hong Kong, I would side with Hong Kong. (Unlikely event, Hong Kong isn't strong enough or stupid enough to start fighting the USA; China wouldn't either, but I don't really support China anyways) Also, same way with Natoli in Storms series. She could help more as a non-Herald, so she didn't get Chosen. Of course, there's the fact that she isn't Gifted, but still. And of course, Darkwind have a bondbird. He wouldn't want to be Chosen anyways... A *lot* of reasons. So, that's that. Bye, take care. Have fun. It is mentioned as a not unheard of thing (AofQ Teren says "Even if you never hear your Companion again, they speak to you when you're Chosen" or something like that) but all of the Heralds that are mentioned can mind speak their Companions. Even Lores (the fathead) but only in deep trance. Am I right?? Pink bubblegum sheep to you all. Tracy >> I believe it is that even Talia heard Rolan spoke to her at the time of her choosing. It is possible that with the strength of their bonds, Talia and Rolan had no need for mindspeech....I always thought that sometimes words can be inadequate. Besides, Talia can't talk to Rolan only that Rolan can talk to her. ************* I think something similar was stated about lifebonding, that people who lifebonded generally consisted of a stable person and a less stable person. In AFall? (I think) Kris said he didn't envy people with lifebonds, that he didn't think it was the ultimate "love" as the bards said. (Have to go hunt through my books now and double check myself) . >>>I think that Stef said the same thing to Skiff and Nyara. But does this mean that the Heralds are unstable people without their Companions?? I hate to think about the fate of the people of Valdermar then if there's no Companions. I believe this only applies to some Heralds who have great gifts(like Elspeth/Vanyel and Talia) or carry extra burden like the Queen where their Companions have to be strong enough to help them through. ************* That's all for now. Uhhhhhhmmmm... could you ask your sister to elaborate a bit? I mean, what DOES a gay look like??? I have been dying to find that out for some twenty years now, but haven't been able to, much to my chagrin. :) Hmmm... you could always reason that if this guy looks like a gay, then a gay must look like him. But wait... there's something wrong with this... ummm... what could that be??? Oh yes!!! If a gay looks like Leonardo DiCaprio, then it must also mean I'm not one, because I sure don't look anything like that. Oh horror of horrors!!! I've been misled! I've wasted 20 years of my life thinking I am a gay!! Now, SOMEONE is going to pay for this!!! :) *snip* > People have nominated and denominated Adrian Paul for Vanyel *snip* Who IS this Adrian Paul guy? I've no idea what he looks like... what movies has he been in? Or has he done some TV stuff? Someone in PANDEMONIUM-L (a list dedicated to the works of Melanie Rawn) nominated him for Kazander of the Isulk'im. Now... there might be some similar characteristic, but somehow Kazander reminds me more of the arabs and that does not fit my mental image of Van. Someone suggested Michael Praed for older Van. That could work. She wuz just fretting to Gwena that "What if these new duties would contradict my duties as Heir and as a Herald?" I think that if she wuz allowed to see that excerpt of the Goddess and all, she would be given the same duties as the other Tayledras. She was given the whole thing unlike Skif, so I would say that her responsibility to the clans would be fuller. She was one with the clan, if that makes sense :) ------------------------------------------ Deniz said: > How does someone look like "a gay"? I don't know. I really don't. I was quoting from my sis and I gave her this really wierd look. The next day, I went to school and asked around and they gave suggestions like " lookin feminine" (?????) I went like " wow! That's a great help!" So please, please don't ask me that. It's like, I myself do not know! Arrgh! >Well, I'm not gonna afflict you all with taking the one show I watch (Lois and Clark) and trying to cast all the actors/actresses into Velgarth... though it would be interesting to see what would happen if their characters found themselves in Velgarth... hmmmmmmm. Wait a minute... what about... *weg* Hmm, I had the exact same kinda thought except that it wasn't with "Lois and Clark). It was with this series I read (STAR WARS). I saw how Luke Skywalker and the force had such a common ground with mind-mages and mages and their ley-lines and nodes! The stronger the gift, the greater need for the gift to Valdemar, but also the greater danger if the gift went untrained or the individual had no guidance, especially during adolesence when emotions run high and control isn't always so great! And Empathy and Mindspeech could literally drive one out of his/her mind if they weren't trained to "block" incoming thoughts/emotions... Any other thoughts on this?
