Also the Kyree in Magics Price were able to Mindspeak Stefen even thought he was unable to Mindspeak back. He could have been of Vanyel's line, since he was related to the royal family. He also has black hair and GREAT looks. BTW its not that mages can't guard against mind magic it's that they don't even think about it, some mages don't even believe mind magic exists (the Empire). _______________________________________________________________________________ Evil: I believe that Ma'ar's incarnations (sp?) as well as himself were all evil. They enjoyed hurting other people for pleasure and they didn't care about their people as people, only as extentions of themselves. Tylendel wasn't evil, he was crazy, and he was not worthy of being a herald when he placed revenge above everything, even human life. When he realised his mistake he once again became worthy of heraldic statis and was honored as such by the ringing of the death bell. ________________________________________________________________________________ Xena: someone wanted to know what it was about , its basically this: a formerly evil warrior lord (Xena) regrets her actions and roams about the countryside doing good with her trusty sidekick Gabrielle. I think Lucy Lawless (who plays Xena) would make a great Kero. But since BTS covers so much time a younger Kero will be needed (or a lot of make-up). ________________________________________________________________________________ Great scene: Two of my favorite scenes are spells. In Eagle& the nightengales The part when Nightengale sends out a message and she says her elven name...WOW! That was a Great scene! Another, previously mentioned scene was the outcasting ceremony...that was awesome. ________________________________________________________________________________ This is Heather's (HTH) casting expirament -- beware it's long: Alberich -- Rutger Hauer Ancar -- Kiefer Sutherland An'desha -- Brad Pitt Daren -- Mel Gibson Darkwind -- Adrian Paul [yes, he's the Highlander guy] Dirk -- David Schwimmer Elcarth -- Jack Lemmon Eldan -- Harrison Ford Elspeth (child) -- Kirsten Dunst Elspeth (adult) -- Samantha Mathis [you know, I just now realized that they played the same person in *Little Women,* too. Go figure.] Falconsbane -- [see An'desha] Firesong -- Alexander Siddig Gaytha -- Angela Lansbury Hulda -- Demi Moore [she's a rotten actress, but Hulda always seemed to me like the kind of character who *should* be rather over-the-top] Jadrek -- John Malkovich Jadus -- Derek Jacobi Jeri -- Geena Davis Jisa -- [I don't know her name. She played Wallace's wife in *Braveheart* and had a beautiful smile.] Karal -- Christian Slater Keren -- Renee Russo Kerowyn -- Sharon Stone Kethry -- Michelle Pfeiffer Kris -- Tom Cruise Medren (child) -- Jonathan Taylor Thomas [as a favor to my 11 yo sister, who's mad about him *grin*] Medren (adult) -- Linus Roache [he was in *Priest.* Wonderful movie.] Mero -- Bob Hoskins Moondance -- Kevin Bacon Natoli -- Winona Ryder [too small a part for such a great actress, but it's what I went with] Need (voice) -- Kate Mulgrew Nyara -- Courtney Love Orthallen -- Mandy Patinkin Randale -- Val Kilmer [normally I'm not a big fan, but he played such a good consumptive in *Tombstone* that I thought the part might suit him] Rolan (voice) -- James Earl Jones [okay, he's only got like three lines. But they're very dramatic lines. You need an awesome voice.] Savil -- Glenn Close Selenay -- Jessica Lange Shavri -- Mary Stuart Masterson Sherrill -- Julia Roberts Silverfox -- Lou Diamond Phillips Skif (child) -- Edward Furlong Skif (adult) -- Matthew Broderick Solaris -- Susan Sarandon Starwind -- Antonio Banderas Stefan -- Ethan Hawke Talia -- Clare Danes Tarma -- Angelica Huston Teren -- Gary Sinise Tremane -- Gary Oldman Treven -- Leonardo di Caprio Tylendel -- Chris O'Donnell Ulrich -- Sean Connery Vanyel -- Michael Praed [that's his name. The Robin Hood guy.] Warrl (voice) -- Liam Neeson Withen -- Patrick Stewart Yfandes (voice) -- Robin Wright Ylsa -- Jamie Lee Curtis ________________________________________________________________________________ On companion mind speech: I think that one of the reasons why companions don't like going around and `speaking people is because it would get out that they're not all the same (kinda like people) and that would get people thinking about the true identity of companions and that would be BAD. Look how long it took Yfandes to bespeak Stefen. He was bardic gifts and ot empathic. Bardic Gift is similar to projective emapthy. Rolan isn't able to probably because he doesn't want Talia to rely on speaking him on everything. Look when she first came there she had no self confidence at all. Try and think of what that would do if he tried to help her with voice all the time and how dependent Talia would become on that person talking her out of her problems. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 May 1997 15:38:18 -0400 From: "Darius" To: Subject: Hello -- New Ideas???? I really like Misty's books. I just got one called the ice sword and it really intrigued me to see other authors use her universe. I thought it was neat. Often I wondered wether there could ever be a palimino companion? Skif sent me along this vien. I wonder how spies could really do their job if they didn't blend in. This led me to think of someone like Skif who was inherently good but had skills and a background that might have made him an exellent spy. But wouldn't a big white blazing companion standout. I thought maybe there might be a special compainion for this type of person. Comments would be appreciated. send to me at darius-+AT+-cancom.net I also wonder how skif and his little pussy cat are doing? I have every book in the series so far? Does anyone know if anything new is planned? I know things seemed to have wrapped up to some extent but I also beleive we havenot heard the last of the empire. And like I said fill in stories are so nice. But then again maybe she will expand the bardic voices theme. Mind you I am tempted to think that the bardic era or world is closely associated with Valdemar. I wonder how spies could really do their > job if they didn't blend in. Think about the concept of "spies". Typically if you want to find out information you do it by sneaking around people who have that information. In most cases this means in houses, castles, etc. Stands to reason that a Companion, no matter what color it is, is not going to blend in too well in the middle of a tavern. In a wooded area the Companion appears to most as being a "ghost horse" (See By the Sword where Kero first met Eldan...p.246 "And if it hadn't been for the man, she wouldn't have thought -- "horse" -- she'd have thought "ghost.") The emphasis is on disguising the Herald themselves, not so much as on disguising the Companions. Is this a homage to Misty, coincidence, or is the word "Ratha" the word for cat in some ancient or current language? ****************************************************************************** *************** That's all...sorry it's so out of date, but I was banned from the 'puter for 2 weeks TaliaRolan-+AT+-aol.com Assistant Pig-Keeper Guardian of Zebra Finches ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 May 1997 18:27:05 -0400 (EDT) From: FireWurm-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Heyla everyone! Companions are horseshaped because that makes them a = good battle companion, it gives them a reason to always be next to their = chosen and it is less obvious than say, a black panther, or a = snow-tiger.=20 On lady Guenevere's cast list, ejem, David Duchovny as Dirk!! Not that = Dirk is bad, or unapropiate, but Dirk is kinda, er, homely... David = Duchovny doesn't exactly fit the description... On my way home, I was thinking about the cast. Wouldn't it = be lovely to give them all british accents?=20 On what Tracy said, actually, Sherrill,(AotQ) can't speak to her = companion either...=20 On the looking gay stuff. I have been very careful on what I say, = but after a while, even I slip. Here in Costa Rica we have a word that = people use to say gay: Playo. The misuse of that word is appalling. At = the beginning it hurts, when you hear that someone is 'playo' because he = did something real nasty, then, in order to not burst into tears at = their cruelty, I came to realize that they say "playo" in lieu of a = better word. If you are new to the Mercedes Lackey list, you will find a host of answers to all sort of questions you may have, plus more detailed guidelines on what is considered proper netiquette for this list. Again, as always, let me preface this with the reminder that we are all guests of Aunti Mel and that we owe her the courtesy of following the guidelines that have been established for this list. Particularly, the guidelines that are designed to reduce the workload on Vanyel (the mailserver). And now, on with the fun! =) Okay, everyone, here is the NewbieFest, with commentary by Ele, Deniz, and Ken. (BTW, if you have comments to add to this, please send them to me via private email at "kenny-+AT+-UDel.Edu"). --- Newbie Fest --- La Fiesta de Nuevenos --- La Fete des Neufs --- Here's a quick table of contents for what's included in this NewbieFest. Actually, this is turning out to be really long, so it's broken up into sections. This will show how they're divided up. Part the First: on getting the FAQ... please do it now, it's simple and easy, and just an e-mail message away. 1. How do I get the FAQ and other official-type documents? Part the Second: On the titles people have and some frequently asked questions. 1. Gods and Goddesses, Clergy, Knights and Dames, and other Assorted Titles 2. Sheep 3. Birthdays 4. Bondbirds Part the Third: On general list-iquette, addressing issues mostly on braiding and responding to list posts. 1. Braiding 2. Why are people yelling at me? or "Sure-Fire Ways to Get Flamed" aka "Really Annoying Things." --------------- Part the First --------------- 1) How do I get the FAQ and other official-type documents? ---------- The FAQ EVERYBODY KEEPS TELLING ME TO READ THE FAQ. WHERE IS IT? HOW DO I GET IT? There are a few different ways to get this valuable document. By mail, FTP, or the web. Jake and Cennydd are busily working on upgrading it, be even longer and more extensive... until then, we'll keep posting this NewbieFest at semi-regular intervals. The following part is quoted from the FAQ, itself: mail: send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk, with a blank Subject: line, and message body: get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.1 get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.2 get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.3 get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.4 get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.5 This will send the FAQ to you, in 5 separate messages. FTP: ftp://ftp.herald.co.uk/pub/lists/lackey-archives/ HTTP: http://www.herald.co.uk/local_info/lackey_faq.html --------- Auntie Mel's Rules of Thumb There's also something really helpful called "Auntie Mel's Rules of Thumb." Unfortunately that isn't available as its own seperate e-mail message. You can get it by going to the web-site that's the home of this list, and either read it online, or better yet, save it for future reference. Actually, you can also get the digest it was reposted in most recently by e-mail. So, here are the two methods: HTTP: http://www.herald.co.uk/local_info/rules_thumb.html e-mail: send a message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with a blank subject and a body: get listproc/mercedes-lackey 970109-1049 It should be message: 11) [REPOST] Auntie Mel's Rules Of Thumb! New Users PLEASE read! by Shdwflt-+AT+-aol.com Seeing as this is really easy to do, please just hit compose, switch between windows, and copy and paste the relevant lines into your message. Copy and past the address, and send off your message. While you're waiting, go on and finish up the rest of the NewbieFest. Within around 20 minutes (at the *most*) you should have all the documentation you requested. Take the time to read it and mull it over. If you pay per byte of e-mail, then visit the URL's listed above, or use the FTP process. Any way you slice the cake, you ought to read these things as they're here to help you out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Version written by Deniz Sarikaya Edited by Eleonora Scoseria and Kenneth Hyde Some materials in this document are copyrighted by Mel Harper.
