I'd really expected more. >Issica I do agree with your opinion of the ending I was expecting more also, yet I really enjoyed the story. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------- >I agree with you on this, at least getting it animated, though it would >more than likely be a cutesy fantasy "Oh! Here is the pretty white horse >with the goody-goody hero on it's back" type of movie I agree totally with you, I love Disney, but I think a lot would be lost in trying to animate. It's to complex for animation to pull off. How about instead of making a movie of a book Misty has out now how about having her write a original screenplay with an entirely new Valdemar story? Then there will be no complaints that it does not fit the book. She could even incorporate it into the timeline and write future books around it. I disagree with you, I feel that if the books are made into movies it will cheapen them. Besides, it would be very hard to pull off without cutting a lot out of it, i.e ~ How would you let the audience know what they are thinking? It can be done in books using italics, but it would not work in the movies. You can't just cut the thoughts out, they are what adds depth to the books. Plus, IMHO, her books are so much more about the people than the landscape and the way things look, so it should be real actors - not eye candy drawings (not that I don't love animation, I do..) that take away from the actual story. I like think it would be hard to put thoughts into a movie that's why if a screenplay totally new was written it might work. Also it probably would be the only way we'd all agree. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------- Personally, I think everyone will get an individual effect, regardless of your sexuality. I don't think any of us sees the books in exactly the same way, nor would we want to--we all bring our own observations, and flavor our viewing of the story with our own experience. Our own experience is what makes us who we are. I agree totally. I also believe that's sad that there are children raised under these conditions where they don't really know what gay is or even black they just hate because their parents do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- Casting Deanna Troi as Sherril, Captain Janeway as Kerowyn, Chekov as Karal. There was a story about two hertasi that help out and found loves for two very lonely people. I can't remember which book right now but I'll look this weekend and let you know. If these two were so good at helping out I don't see why there would be a problem with them being a good choice for chosen. Chosen and Hertasi (sp?) and Darkwind (again): Hertasi couldn't be Chosen. The most obvious reason: wrong shape. Also, hertasi isn't loyal to Valdemar, they are loyal to whoever they are helping and to the Vales. Darkwind wouldn't be Chosen because he doesn't have any personal loyalty to Valdemar. He's only loyal to Elspeth. His loyalty to Elspeth could also share over to Valdemar, not that we've seen it yet. Also a hertasi could be loyal to Valdemar, it an untried area as of yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ >>Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife >>Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously >>Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb Were did the saying come from? Darkwind being a Hawkbrother already comes with rights and responiblies(sp?). And they already have someone to act sort of like a Companion, that is their Bonbirds. I waited through two digests and I didn't see my post, so, I'll pose the post again. Does anyone know how Healers figured out what herb to use when? They seem to have great stores of natural knowledge, but where did it all come from? was someone just wandering in the woods someday and said "Hey, that root looks like if one pulverized it and boiled it that it would cure , I don't know, the flu?" I'd really like to know where all the Healer knowledge comes from and how it got started. Another thing, did anyone ever notice that in a lot of pot-boilers, the magical cure is only found by going on a treck to the nether regions? If this cure is only found there, who the heck knew to go there in the first place and discover it? --------------------- About the 200 Tylendel thing. But if it is two hundred, it would > seem likely that the repudiation that Teren mentions might have been > 'Lendel. According to the timeline in the beginning of most of the recent books, Randale's reign began in 798. Tylendel's repudiation and suicide happened before that, but not by more than 7 to 11 years, putting it at around 787-791, give or take a year either way. (I looked at the following facts: Jisa was born before Randi became Heir at his father's death [MPromise, toward the end of ch. 2]. She is 6 and Randi is already King at the beginning of MPromise [ch. 2 again]. And Tashir points out to Van that he has been mourning 'Lendel for 12 years [MPromise, toward the end of ch. 11]. The reign of Selenay began in 1376, and she's been on the throne for at least 8 years or so when Talia arrives. (Someone had a timeline figured out for that period, but I can't find my copy.) At any rate, the interval appears to be close to 600 years from Tylendel's repudiation to Teren's mention of repudiation -- so Teren must be talking about another one. I honestly can't remember them discussing the possibility of Cymry repudiating Skif if he chose to stay with Nyara in the Vale. I am going to flip thru Winds of Fury......What I found is a quote that the sword Need told Nyara before they all returned to Valdamar..."Remember you have Cymry favoring you.....These Heralds listen to their horses..............And Cymry will back you because she knows you're one of the best partners Skif could have." Even if Valdamar refused Nyara and made her life difficult and Skif chose to leave I, IMO, don't think Cymry would repudiate Skif for following his heart. But the chances of Skif ever giving up his duty to Valdamar and his bond with Cymry are probably next to none. Thats why Nyara did not even give it a second thought about going to Valdamar with Skif. Skif also thought, in Winds of Change, that he would rather give up his arm than lose Cymry even knowing how he felt about Nyara. **************************************************************************** >Aistes wrote: >They say on a basic level that all Companions can Mindspeak their Chosen. >Rolan can't but then again Talia only has a touch of that gift. Rolan can Mindspeak Talia (which he did do on the day that he chose her) but I guess he chooses to communicate with her the only way she can communicate with him which is through her Empathy gift. Talia is the one who in unable to Mindspeak Rolan. Yfandes in the Last Herald Mage series bespoke Stefen the Bard who can't Mindspeak and you will notice that Kero's Companion Sayvil Mindspeaks whoever she wants (pretty much whenever she wants:). Rolan also, throughout the Winds Trilogy, Mindspeaks with Gwena on a regular basis. The Rolan and Talia Mindspeech thing seems to have alot of inconsistencies to it. But someone said (and I apologize because I deleted it before I got the name) "We've got to remember that Arrows was the 1st of the Valdamar books and Misty was just working her world out". I think that this also explains the timeline/repudiation inconsistencies but than again maybe not. Maybe we will get a story about someone being repudiated by their Companion other than Tylendel. One never knows:)))) Just my thoughts.....Blessed Be.....Jess ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 11:54:36 -0600 From: Windstorm To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Healers:Repost Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19970523115436.006a72d4-+AT+-pop.srv.ualberta.ca> At 01:10 PM 23/05/97 +0100, you wrote: >Does anyone know how Healers figured out what herb to use when? Try reading Jean M. Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear Series. This has a bit of that in it. Maybe someone with a cough was drinking cherry-bark tea and found out it eased the cough, so they kept using it and reccomending it to their friends. A lot of things were found out by accident. Knowledge was passed down through the generations and people kept experimenting and amassing greater knowledge. As for "miracle cures" only growing in obscure, hard to reach places, people travelled and maybe someone who lived near that place went to another tribe and brought the stuff with them. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 17:35:52 -0400 From: Chris Talbot To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: repudiation & Mindspeech Message-ID: <199705232135.RAA18508-+AT+-relief.idirect.com> >I honestly can't remember them discussing the possibility of Cymry >repudiating Skif if he chose to stay with Nyara in the Vale. I think it might be able to happen, but considering the symptoms (?) of lifebonds, I don't think it would be possible to hate a person for long after being bonded to them. As for falling in love with someone other than a lifebonded partner....... I would have to say that I don't think that's possible. Once again there are the symptoms of lifebonds, which in all cases end in profound love for the lifebonded "other", even if it is avoided for a while at first. I don't think that a love that strong would make anyone think they need to fall in love with somebody else... But repudiate by defintion is a fairly negative word. So, IMO, if Skif were to give up being a Herald, Cymry and he would most likely part but I can't imagine it being negative like it was with Tylendel. Most likely the Queen would assign Skif some out of the way place where Heralds are still needed but not in the central goings on so he could keep his relationship with Cymry. In the Winds Trilogy Skif tried explaining what being a Herald is all about to Nyara. He explained it as a need, duty and love- something he could never give up. Who knows maybe Nyara will someday come to understand about being a Herald and be Chosen herself (I haven't read Storm Breaking and I don't know what kind of role, if any Nyara and Skif have). I think it was Wintermoon who commented in Winds of Change that Nyara and Skif maybe a lifebond. Also the conversation between Elspeth and Darkwind never came up with any answers - Darkwind asked "would your peopole make him choose between his love and his land? Would this cause his Companion to abandon him?" - Elspeth replies "I don't know... the subject has never come up." Neither mentioned it as repudiation.
