Granted, I'm sure Leareth was a lot smarter than Falconsbane, but it just seems like--well, I'll break it down in this way: Firesong is a descendant of Van's and therefore probably at about equal strength. Note that I said ABOUT as there is no way to prove it. As interesting as Firesong is, I liked Van a lot better. I just saw the perfect hindsight on his actions. I think it would bother me a lot more if he hadn't come back in Sorrows. --Hamlet "Hello," said Arthur. Okay, but in Arrows of the Queen, in the beginning (or middle, I'm not sure and since the book is in a box and halfway across the state at the moment, I can't be exact) Talia is in class with Teren for her first day and asks him what happened to Vanyel. Teren says [PARAPHRASE WARNING] "He died. The Dark Servants chopped him to death before help could arrive." Whether these two events are linked (and it's doubtful--White Foal Pass, Crook Back Pass, nobody else knew about Leareth not to mention it *was* the first book--and as an aside, I figured that the comparison between what happened and what Teren said happened could be either the whole lack of magic thing in Valdemar or another thing about it being the first book--this is *way* too long) is immaterial. It simply stands to reason why someone would think they were from the same time period. --Hamlet "Hello," said Arthur. Yeah, I figured around 30 minutes at first but then later it seemed like a lot shorter... maybe 10 or 15 minutes just from the way she used it (M's Promise or M's Price--Yfandes and Van tired, Yfandes says, to hell with roads, I'm taking a shortcut. Van just does the best he can to hang on, they jump over stuff, then land on the pavement in about a candlemark--and with all the time described in between, seems about that long. Also, M's Promise, Vanyel gets up one morning at First reach and bumps into Leren "Good--morning, Herald Vanyel." The pointed pause was in reference to "the fact that it lacked little more than a candlemark until noon.") Couldn't these be the griffins we are talking about? maybe some of those didn't die off, but they migrated, and inbreeding or mutations could've caused them o develop strange abilities. It is far fetched, but it is an alternative to the Makaar theory, since Makaars are supposed to have very short life spans. What about cold-drakes? What are they supposed to look like? Could they just be somewhat similar to the griffins? I was flipping through my books and noticed something. Illustrations seem to bother me. I don't know why, it seems that I'd rather have my imagination do the work for me. Sometimes I look at the illustrations after reading a chapter about a person, and I am shocked to see someone I don't recognize, and after reading the caption, I squeal and say "What! How does that tie in with the assumption that > Grove-borns are higher spirits? Why did a "youngster" get incarnated as a > very important Companion? (sorry, that was 2 questions) I think what is meant there--and Van is saying it--is that Gwena is a relatively new spirit--not a reincarnated Herald, or anything like that. Gwena was only about as old as Elspeth herself, but as Van points out, being Grove Born, she will always believe that what she does is right, and that there is no better way to do it. (Poor Elspeth!) So, Gwena is not a child that has been reincarnated to a Grove Born--and in spite of the recent discussion, I still believe that GBs are NOT reincarnated--she is simply a very new higher spirit. And along those lines, it is obvious that we have all these questions that no one can solve. So, for all of you who will be attending DragonCon, why don't you ask Misty some of these questions when you're there getting an autograph or whatever. Then you can tell all of us unfortunate souls who can't go what she says! :-] Jacquelle It is a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done. It is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known. _A Tale of Two Cities_ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 May 1997 10:59:23 -0600 From: Windstorm To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: RE: romance, stallions, posts Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19970531105923.006a1010-+AT+-pop.srv.ualberta.ca> >Also, a while ago a post 'talked' about Vanyel having a romance with a >female... I'll try to get more info at DragonCon....
