Braiding 2. Why are people yelling at me? or "Sure-Fire Ways to Get Flamed" or "Really Annoying Things" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Braiding Okay, there seems to be a lot of debate on this topic. Basically, the reason braids were invented was because too many one-liners and similarly short posts will cause Vanyel (the listprocesser) to break down. However, the problem with braids is that sometimes they get too long and make people feel like they're reading digests. Basically, if you're going to write a one-liner, either don't, incorporate it into another message, or send it private. If you want to respond to several posts on the same topic then please BRAID. It is really irritating to see several short messages by one person in a row on the same topic. It's so much more convenient to have them all together. However, some people don't like braids because they can grow to epic proportions, often covering more than 10 topics and easily taking 1000 bytes of memory--not fun. But there are reasons for this latter type of braid, as well. Some people only write once in a while, and contribute to many of the discussions... so rather than respond to each seperate message seperately, or seperate the different topics for different braids, they combine it to form a mega braid. If you want more arguments for braids, write to: Emily the Invisible or Cennydd If you want more arguments against braids, write to: Tensen or Jerry Cullingford If you would like instructions for how to braid, find your server and contact these wonderful volunteers(remember, cut and paste :)): PINE David Tiffany Cennydd Eudora Light Emily the invisible Pegasus Emily the invisible Vrondi (DOS and Windows) Netscape Eleonora Vrondi Juno Vrondi AOL Lady Silvermoon Spry Deniz Sarikaya Hotmail Nobody yet, but they seem to be having lots of technical problems, so if you have figured it out, please contact one of the editors of this Newbiefest and volunteer to help others. Not listed? State your server on list and we'll see what we can do. If you would like instructions on how *not* to braid, write: Tensen ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2) Why are people yelling at me? This section lists some guaranteed ways of joining the Drifting Ashes Club as well as the topics/things that may get you flamed by other listmembers (although, hopefully off the list, since flaming is a no-no). In case you don't already know, "flaming" is a Internetiquette word that is used for any message that consists of yelling at a person. Basically, "flaming" is yelling at someone via email. ---------- SURE-FIRE WAYS TO GET FLAMED Ele's note: Cennydd is our resident linguist as well as Mage of Green Silences and God of Karma. He is by popular acclaim our defender against those who advertently or inadvertently waste bandwidth, and will normally pay them a private visit (i.e. email). In some cases, his well-intentioned, semihumorous flames are public (as in Aistes's case). He is also a great guy and we love him very much, so don't get the impression that he is some kind of monster who will flame whoever steps marginally out of line. He will not. He is very tolerant, and anyway if you get flamed by him, I would suggest your enjoying it. Most list members treasure his flames ;) [Deniz adds: She makes me wish I were a member of the Drifting Ashes Club too, Sheesh!] In the Mage's own words: >>Also, several people (I won't name names because you will know who you are) are on the list of Soon To Be Drifting Ashes. Please, snip and braid, or the list becomes unmanageable, Auntie Mel becomes testy, and I become downright bitchy (as list-members will attest, I am sure). [Believe him! Please! --Deniz =)] BTW, in case you are not familiar with the terms: snip means to delete the quoted material in a response that is not relevant to the response. Braiding is when you combine responses to several postings in one message. A rule of thumb is "your quoted material should never be longer than your response." Another rule of thumb is "One-liners are *EVIL*!" [emphasis mine]. BTW, in case you are wondering how to join the Drifting Ashes, just post a response with 2 or more pages of quotation and less than one screen of response commentary. That generally will get the job done. =) I am not going to say that TINAF, because that would be obviously misleading. Rather, this is a friendly shot across the bow with a high-powered blow-dryer. Real flaming will be done on an individual basis in the privacy of your own home. =)<< We couldn't say it better ourselves. And I, for one, won't try, because I don't think my asbestos will last an assault from Cennydd, because I'm sure he doesn't fight with just fire. ---------- REALLY ANNOYING THINGS FLUFF Fluff is basically what it sounds like... this is a Mercedes Lackey Discussion List. Fluff is anything that is not Misty related. If we had no fluff at all on this list, we'd be bored silly. If we had too much fluff, though... we'd wonder why this list is called mercedes-lackey and not just something like good-times (the virus does NOT exist! You can't get a virus by reading a text-based e-mail message!!!!!). It's actually because of fluff that we had two new groups formed. These would be the Lilac Fairy's Bower and the Mage Wars, both of which are now seperate mailing lists. RELIGION [Cennydd comments: In the past, discussions of personal religious beliefs have caused no end of grief. Frequently, in a discussion of Misty's books, people will start discussing where (in real life) some of the ideas may have come from. This is fine. But when these discussions start moving into the area of "Well, I don't believe in that" or "That is against my religion" or "But the [holy writ of choice] says that things are like this...", the discussion has strayed on to dangerous ground. Remember, this is a forum for discussing Mercedes Lackey, not for airing one's own personal views about religion or spirituality, particularly in a way that denies the validity of other religions or beliefs (and in case you were wondering how serious this is, the only person who has ever been removed from the list was removed because he would not stop telling people that his religion was right and theirs was wrong). Among other things, this means that religious beliefs do not constitute an argument for a particular interpretation of Misty. The rule of the list is definitely "There is *no* one true way." ] ONE-LINERS As we've said before, and will probably say forever, one liners are annoying. Also, they give Vanyel (the list server) fits, and make him break down. It's like getting a letter in the mail consisting of a slip of paper saying, "Hi! Write me! Bye!" or something inane like that. PUBLIC/PRIVATE MESSAGES Many times, I find myself reading a message from a newbie, and wondering if they had wanted to send it private mail, and that they should have done so. Remember, because this is a discussion list, when you hit reply, your message will automatically be addressed to the Misty List. If you want to send a private message but want to use the text from their message, just delete the List's address and write in the person's address into the To: line. [Cennydd comments: as Mel points out in the FAQ, the current configuration for this mailing list is as a discussion list. This means that when you hit reply in most email programs, the default is to send the reply to the entire list. If you are replying directly to a particular person, be sure to select "reply to From:" and not "reply to Reply-to:" so that your message gets sent the person, not the list.] [Deniz adds: However, seeing as not all mailers have this option *glare at obsolete Spry mailer*, please double and triple check when you intend to send privately] SPOILERS Remember to use spoilers, please... currently, Storm Breaking, Fire Bird, and Sword of Ice are in spoilers. If you want to ask about them, either write a seperate message with SPOILER in the title, and the name of which book. If it's in a post, please put it at the end, because many people will, upon encountering a spoiler, disregard the rest of the message. Besides, it's the polite thing to do. [Cennydd comments: also remember that Babylon5 and Star Trek: Voyager are under spoilers too. Mel, in particular, has threatened dire and horrible fates to anyone who discusses either of these programs' recent seasons on the list (remember that many people are not in the US and are only now seeing seasons that are almost 2 years old in the US).] DONE-TO-DEATH TOPICS Okay, here is a list of topics that have been hashed and re-hashed over the last year or so. In order to get on this list, a topic has to have come up several times. None of these topics are "forbidden" and people are certainly welcome to discuss them, but you may hear little plaintive sighs from the older members of the list. [Deniz adds: Don't let that discourage you *grin*] Most of these topics will hopefully find their way into the FAQ at some point, but that has not been done yet. BTW, if you would like to research the archives and summarize the answers to any of these questions, you can send the results to Cennydd for inclusion in the FAQ. You will get a by-line and everything. =) "Cennydd's List of Done to Death Topics:" MUD/MUSH/RPG/Fanfic, does it exist? Why won't Misty allow out it? Casting ("if they made a Valdemar movie, I would like to see X as Y") Are they really making a movie? Are Companions reincarnate Heralds? Who is who? Can other than Heralds be reincarnated? Are all Heralds reincarnated? Are Grove-Born also reincarnations? Gods: Are there more than two? Is Vkandis the same as the Shin'a'in God? Is the Star-Eyed the same as Kalenel, Vkandis' Consort? Who is Astera, Agnetha, etc? Questions about Misty: Is she a witch (wiccan, neopagan, whatever)? Is her writing going downhill? Does she read this list? Does she object to being called Misty? Topics about LHM: How old was Van when he died? The whole discussion about 'Lendel/Stef (liked it, hated it, what?) Was Van a nice person? (careful with this one, beware the OAM) Why are so many Misty characters gay? Why no lesbian main characters? What is the Kinsey scale and how is it used? Do we really have to talk about sexuality? What is textevd and do you have to use it? Why did Cennydd just start frothing at the mouth? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- remember, sometimes you're gonna feel out of it when someone cracks an in-joke... don't worry we were all newbies once. If you're ever confused, offended, or anything else, just write whoever affected you that way, and they'll probably take the time to explain what they meant, and to help you out. If you're having problems, look for the people who have stuff like "official welcoming committee member" in their sig and write them... they're begging to help you out. See? That was painless, wasn't it? Oh, yeah... yes, Savil (Van's teacher) was reincarnated as Sayvil (Kero's companion). By the way, in case you didn't get this before, welcome to the insani... er, fun! Well, as far as it goes, it wasn't a question of whether you legally can post them or not. It is a question of Mel asking everyone not to do so. Lyrics are copyrighted (and I was a music major for quite long enough to know that whatever you may have been told, composers and publishers are generally extremely touchy about copyright violations and get fiercely protective). Mel wisely has chosen to avoid any future trouble by asking that everyone refrain from posting materials that may be legally iffy. I think that common decency and guest courtesy require that we go along with her request. > All U2 albums and hence, songs, are ASCAP. Actually, I don't think so. ASCAP stands for "American Society of Composers, Artists and Performers," and has nothing to do with the copyright status of a written work. Unless the writer of the song has actually explicitly released the song to the public domain, they still own the copyright. Publication of the lyrics does not imply copyright release. Presumably, members of ASCAP give the Society a limited release which allows the Society and record companies permission to copy the works in question as part of liner notes, etc. But, it most definitely does not release the material into the public domain. Then somebody (don't ask me who, if 'Reesa ever mentioned names I don't remember them) sent 'Reesa some really nasty private e-mail in which they said her sheep jokes were disgusting, she was warped, she was a corrupting influence, stuff like that. Understandably, she was upset, and complained on-list; everybody said they didn't see anything wrong with the jokes, and the sheep were here to stay. Hmmm. Interesting point. Of course, you are forgetting the deus ex machina, Misty. Elspeth couldn't have remained the Brat because that would not have worked in the plotline. Quite frankly, Elspeth's "recovery" from brattiness seemed to be too easy and complete, while at the same time being to ephemeral and shaky. She reverts to brattiness at frequent points throughout all of the books, except for the HoV books, where she is almost cloyingly perfect (except for her "temptation" by Orthallen's little catspaw).
