How do you know it was part of the written history of Valdemar? It's an ancient song, and Valdemar isn't an ancient land. Maybe that's how the song changed over time, to fit in with what the Valdemarens knew. Since there is no indication that Valdemarans *ever* knew of >the existence of Kalenel, it is unlikely that they would have used her as >a character in a legend. Well where did Valdemarens come from in the first place? They fled a land; well couldn't that have been a place where those were the gods, or at least some of them? And then the knowing of those gods could have died out slowly and been replaced by what they have today. Afer all, Valdemar is a hodge-podge of religions, and one of them was bound to know about Vkandis and Kalenel. What is the main religion of valdemar anyway? Do they even have a main one? It's an > ancient song, and Valdemar isn't an ancient land. Maybe that's how the > song changed over time, to fit in with what the Valdemarens knew. We know this because we are told this. The song isn't really that ancient. It is part of the Windrider Cycle (or contemporary with it) and the characters of Sun and Shadow really were Heralds, which means that it took place after the Founding. Like I said, this is stated in one of the Arrows books (Arrows Flight, as I recall). I don't have them in my office (which is where I am at the moment) or I would give the page numbers. However, if you look at the intro to Sun and Shadow in the back of Oathbreaker (IIRC), it also talks about them. > Well where did Valdemarens come from in the first place? They fled a land; > well couldn't that have been a place where those were the gods, or at least > some of them? Well, I don't think that will is a spoiler anymore, but if you haven't read any of the Storms books, don't look. We know that the original settlers of Valdemar came from the Empire. And the Empire quite explicitly does not worship Vkandis or Kalenel. Particularly since the Empire was founded by the remnants of Ma'ar's army, they could hardly have taken up the worship of the Goddess of the Kaled'a'in. > Afer all, Valdemar is a hodge-podge of religions, and one of them was > bound to know about Vkandis and Kalenel. You know, this does bring up an interesting point. The Temples of the Sunlord in Valdemar were supposed to have broken from the main Temple in Karse when the false Sons of the Sun came to power and the Writ of Vkandis was either suppressed or perverted. So, why is there no indication that the Valdemaran temples retained the worship of the Kalenal? Nary even a peep about that, anywhere in the book. As I recall, the Goddess pretty much kept her hands off of him and only gave him guidance indirectly. You are right that Karal saw Florian as a young man, but this doesn't necessarily mean that Companions are reincarnated as humans. Since Florian is a normal (not GB) Companion, it makes sense that he is a human spirit that has been reincarnated, and the young male form may be his *past* and not his future. Sort of like the way that Van always perceived Yfandes as a human lady in his head. And of course (and I don't really think this is true, but it is an alternative), it may just be the case that human minds, when confronted with intelligent personality anthropomorphize it in there heads and the "human" images have no relation to incarnations, future or past. Now, lest we all forget, Vanyel took all of the focus stones used by the last Guardians and after the spell that cast the Web was finished, one of the Guardians reached out and tried to remove his stone from the arrangement. Each focus stone was fused into the arrangement and the table etc, was all one piece. Plus, he used the Companions and offered the energy to the Vrondi. When each Guardian died, Vanyel felt his or her death. HE was the last living Guardian and the only one that had ever laid hand and probed into the consciousness of a Heartstone. He used a spell he had looked up plus his Tayledras mage training and created a Heartstone. And that's how it was done. Vanyel had a very personal stake in freeing up the Herald Mages to do other work and tieing each Herald through the Companion Herald bond to the Web. And that's my take on that subject. Any else interested in trying to get a slightly larger gathering of our list sibs at one Ren Faire? For me, East Coast preferably. The New York Faire in Tuxedo, NY is a good place, or perhaps the Pennsylvania faire. The VA faire was a good meeting place, if only we could have scheduled the days better to get folks there on the same day of the weekend. We didn't get enough blackmail this way :) Tensen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Jun 1997 11:51:01 -0500 From: nme848-+AT+-hecky.acns.nwu.edu (Nina Ehgartner) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Florian Message-ID: <199706091751.AA171018689-+AT+-hecky.acns.nwu.edu> S P O I L E R S P A C E > >Mon, 9 Jun 1997, Jennifer Lucy Cornelius wrote: > >[attribution not given] wrote: >> [snip about the idea that it is theoretically possible that Companions >> *could* be reincarnated as humans.] > You are right that Karal saw >Florian as a young man, but this doesn't necessarily mean that Companions >are reincarnated as humans. Since Florian is a normal (not GB) Companion, >it makes sense that he is a human spirit that has been reincarnated, and >the young male form may be his *past* and not his future. IIRC, when Karal and An'desha walk the moonpaths at the end of SB, Karal does see Florian as a young man. But, he makes a mental note to look for that young man in a few years at the Collegium and that when he meets "Florian" not to let too much slip because he (Karal) will know about Florian's past, but the young man won't. I think that those in the Havens are given a choice if they want to come back, but that they can do so more than once. If my statement above is accurate (I've got to remember to bring my books to work) and the assumption that Companions are re-incarnated Heralds is true, then it's possible to keep on coming back {ex:Florian as a Herald--->Florian as Florian--->Florian as a future trainee/Herald}. I don't know how many of you have read the Diana Tregarde Investigation novels she wrote.. but in the first one called "Children of the night" Misty portrays two versions of vampires. One called a psi-vamp which seems to sap peoples souls and another more traditional kind... I've not read all of the investigation novels yet, I just started them, but in them does she ever explain the difference between the two types of villans? I was just wondering. Secondly, In her book Sacred Ground, which I loved, did anyone else see connections between her use of magic and the style of hers. Also a connection between Savil the teacher and Mooncrow? *chocolate, peanut and carmel sheeps for everyone while they last* Lady Rose ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Jun 1997 16:33:48 -0500 From: Tom & Judy Yeary TIMESHARE RESALES To: jeep-l-+AT+-knuth.mtsu.edu Subject: REMOVE!
