I think Gwena was somehow "forced" to hide information. We still know so very little about the Companions, particularly the Grove-born, but they seem to be directly accountable to some higher power(s). Caught between a demanding boss and a demanding Chosen, I think she had to make some awkward compromises. Here's another Mindspeech lie that I haven't seen mentioned here: in Storm Warning, Altra tells Karal (via Mindspeech) that he is "above" such mundane activities as eating. Later, we learn that this was an outright lie, and Altra does indeed require food. I think Misty's original statement about being unable to lie via Mindspeech is, itself, something of a lie. :-) ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 01:53:59 +0100 (BST) From: Erik McKee To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Technical question -Reply Message-ID: <1.5.4.16.19970612194736.224f9566-+AT+-majik-net.com> Vanyel wrote: >OK > I'm gettimg the same answer that all Heardls learn ground¢er but >why would someone say with a firestarting gift need to sheild? > Remember back when Vanyel had just had his chanels blasted open in MP? All those thoughts of others were rather deafening. So Shielding would be very important if the herald had any form of mind speach, since it would also keep others from hearing his/her thoughts. Also, we find out in the same series, that the companions are capable of shielding as well, when Van tells Yfandes to be sure to block him out of her liason with one of the stallions so that he (Van) can get some sleep. Grounding would give you a firm base to work from, even if only using mind magics. And as mentioned before by various others whose names have succumbed to the delete key, shielding can pretect the herald from his own gift, as in firestarting example. On a different, much fulffier subject, Deniz or Cennyth or whoever is now in charge, what ever happened to the naming ceremony for the new clergymembers of Procrastination? Is it still being prorastinated, or did I miss it somehow? Well, back to procrastinating various and sundry tasks... She must learn grounding and centering in order to properly establish her shields, so that her Gift doesn't become totally uncontrolled. >From that, I infer that shielding is vital to allowing the Gifted person to retain control -- to protect him/herself as well as others. Many of the Gifts seem to be two-way, both receptive and projective. Talia could receive the emotions of others and project her own feelings into others. Without shielding, she started leaking her projective Empathy, causing others to feel her own depression and despair. Without total control, a Firestarter would be a disaster area waiting to happen. Talia nearly killed Kris with her uncontrolled Gift, and she "only" had Empathy. I would hate to think what would have happened if she'd been leaking a Firestarting Gift! ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 1997 19:19:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Janelle Colleen Jarboe To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Lying by mindspeech???? Hope it's cool to jump right in. Altra gets off on a another technicality. Altra says he's ABOVE eating, not that he doesn't eat. When my cat eats she looks like she's above the act of eating as well. Also I've been reading the archives and wanted to add my two bits to the candlemark discussion. Using candles to measure time is historically acurate. I don't know how prevelent the use was but I'm sure that candles were used as timekeepers in the thirteen hundereds. They aren't acurate timekeepers but neither are pendulm clocks. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 02:24:16 -0400 (EDT) From: Lonehawk2-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Temporary good-bye Message-ID: <970613022415_555827002-+AT+-emout18.mail.aol.com> Heyla all of you, I have been lurking for a long while and haven't joined into the conversation much although I've had fun keeping up with it. But the time has come to say good-bye for a while. I do not particularly like signing off my favourite list on my birthday, but I am going on a 4 week study trip to England and so will be back afterward. I've had much fun with all you guys. Keep the welcome mat out and be good. While concentrating on using ANY gift unless the shield is in place an enemy mage can take advantage of the person by using a mind speaking gift to destroy or redirect the focus and or the mage him/herself. Jilly >> Well the only reason I chose firestrating is becasue it is a rare gift and because I understand that need for sheilding and all for the more common gifts like empathy and mindspeech and thought sensing. And you bring up a good point along with everyone else, I was thinking on a one track. I had forgotten that a sheild would not only prevent leakage but also would prevent possable intrusion. After seeing everyones posts and thinking on it more I guess the FS gift without training or control would kinda be like a Fetching gift unsheilded or controlled. I thank you all for your Ideas and comments.
