Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19970618174216.00698ef4-+AT+-mail.geocities.com> Companions are always "in season", and they have the same gestation period as humans. Both of those things are stated when Talia, Skif, and Kris, are together near the end of Talia's internship, and Talia leaves suddenly 'cause Rolan and Cymry are...ahem...enjoying each other's company, so to speak... :) and Skif wonders why. Rolan, IMO, is sorta like the most popular among them, and has the most status, so is very much sought after as a partner. It seems to me that Companions are very much like humans as far as sexual interests go... So it stands to reason that the pattern would continue. Well, I really haven't got anything else to comment on, so I'll just say hi to everyone and begone for another period of lurking! :) Known to one and all as MorningStar, alternate names accepted at times Mindmate to the tawny eagle Ryia! morningstar-+AT+-poetic.com dawnrain00-+AT+-aol.com I can attempt to help those of you on AOL or anyone who uses Eudora Lite, IE Mail, or Netscape mail. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jun 1997 20:11:34 -0400 (EDT) From: AERDEN-+AT+-delphi.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Another Character Disappearence... Message-ID: <01IK8B1XHJQQ95N6SC-+AT+-delphi.com> Lani--This plot development is one of the great tragedies of Misty's writing, in my humble opinion. (g) Basically, it has become increasingly less profitable for her to write Diana Tregarde books, as they don't sell well among the general public, although they are wildly popular within her fandom. The sequel to _Jinx High_, I think, was supposed to be _Triangle Park_, which hasn't been seen nor heard from since the late 80's. I really wish she would write the sequel, since I'm dying to know how Diana would handle an enemy from a completely unexpected quarter. Sigh. The Heralds are never shy but >Companions don't seem to form solid relationships or have >many flings. Does anyone else have an opinion on the >romance/sex lives of Companions? Are they more like hourses >than people in this respect or what? I just thought about something. In MPromise, Van "dies", and he is given a choice to die, and be in peace, or to go back to the RW, and save the ones he loves and Valdemar, with his life at stake. Then, in the Mage Winds, In sorrows, they mention some people are given a choice to reincarnate, or go to "heaven". Now, the dead shaych characters we have come across in the books are Van, 'Lendel/Stef and Ylsa, Van came back as a spirit in Sorrows, Lendel came back as Stefen, and Stefen came back as a spirit. Ylsa died, but we don't know what happened to her. Is it too soon for her to have come back? Or are we just assuming all Heralds are going to choose to come back as Companions? Maybe the reason of why we haven't seen shaych companions are a) that information wouldn't add much to the storylines, since we have yet to see a story told from the point of view of a Companion (now, wouldn't that be something) b) I think that becoming horse-shaped after being human would make them less preocupied on their appearance, and they would fall in love/lust with the personality, and even though their gender might not go with their sexual preference. Well, who am I to say, after all, "the last time I was a Companion", c)Perhaps when Talia said Companion's Field got interesting at night, she was stating all kinds of sexual activities went on, but since she doesn't find same sex relations strange, she doesn't think it is that important to mention it. Perhaps Heralds all know, and since what we hear is conversations between citizens, they take that people take that information for granted. d)Perhaps Misty hasn't thought on how to present that "horsey" side of nature. I must say it is nice to know I am not the only one out there with such enthusiasm for this really neat world this wonderful authoress has created. I had a conjectural question that I was wondering if any one else had wondered about or perhaps could give some insight from other sources than I have available. I was wondering what in the world happened to the heart stone of Valdemar after the cataclysm I mean all the nodes disappeared so what happened to all the vales and their protections that were powered by heart stones? It is a matter of a soul moving into a different body. I think that the gifts come from the body not the soul (at least not all of the ability.) The reason I say this is because Tylendel was a fairly powerful mage but Stef didn't have any mage potential. The Companions all have basically the same powers (with the exception of the grove born.) so maybe it depends on the body not the spirit. I am not sure if I am making any sense but that is my view on it. That was my read on the situation as well, I understood that gifts were of the body, hence when Kethry was transferred into the bandit's ( I forget hi/her name) she was unable to use her mage powers other than those that came by sheer force of will. Parkinson's involves a lot of shaking and loss of motor skills. I remember Randi getting weaker and weaker but not shaking or anything. I'm not sure than we are supossed to be able to identify his disease becuase cancer doesn't sound right either. I imagine that Healers can identify the "wrongness" of cancer pretty easily but that is purely speculation. The Companions all have basically the same powers (with >the exception of the grove born.) so maybe it depends on the body not >the spirit.=20 There's something of the sort in Oathbound. It's in the part where they're facing the demon again, and Keth's body was switched w/ the one of the man Thalkarsh(sp?) truned into a girl. The demon says something about her (not Keth) being more use to him because she was now in a mage-gifted body. So that seems like proof that it's the body which has the gifts, and not the spirit. The thing is, when Van & co. were in Sorrows, they hadn't really been given new bodies, but they didn't really have physical bodies either, so in that case they *should* have been powerless. But then, why keep 'em on the border as a magical guardian if they couldn't really do anything? There probably was an exception in that case. I just finished Oathbreakers yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not Jadrek and Kethry are lifebonded? I think Kethry would know it if she was bonded, like she would notice and feel the new bond and if that was the case I can't imagine that she would hide it from Tarma. Also Kethry is already bonded to Tarma and that damned sword; I think a third bond might just drive her crazy. Lastly I was under the impression that people rarely survive their lifebonds by much (Karen tried to death-will herself, Van's suicidal behavior, Stef traveling to the sorrows) but Kethry was alive and kicking in BtS long after Jadrek's death. Talia is a great example. In AF, she is tortured almost to death. She is instrumental in Valdemar's history. Wouldn't you think that the Valdemaran gods would help her out as well. I suppose that they did in the assistance of her rescue (through the Companions, Dirk and Elspeth). How about the Catyclysm and the Shin'a'in. Remember the clan leaders that had to sacrifice themselves for the land to be reborn? Anyway, who's to say that Vkandis didn't protect Karal? He survived. Starfire Hi everyone, Does anyone agree with me that Karal got a raw deal in the storm trilogy?.First his mentor who he looked on as a surrogate father is assasinated then he has to endure the agony of being a channel for magic THREE times! and ends up blind. Surely Vykandis should have protected his servant a little better, after all Karal does'nt have an unkind or selfish bone in his body and I'm afraid for me seeing secondhand thru the eyes of a firecat just does'nt cut it. Message-ID: <199706192011.NAA03092-+AT+-f15.hotmail.com> Hey, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any new Serrated Edge books coming out soon, or planned? I liked Chrome Circle more than any other book in that series. Shar is great! I'm also a huge anime fan, and to me the kitsune/dragon/Underhill storyline had a very anime feel. Wouldn't it be great to see the whole story done anime-style? I want to see more of Shar and Tannim, too. What WILL Tannim's parents think of her...? If anyone out there can tell me more about kitsune than we learn in the books, I'd appreciate hearing from them. P.S.- the middle of nowhere is the eastern shore of Maryland-specifically Mardela Springs. Never heard of it? Join the club! Butter-pecan sheep to all. As for universes...well...it's extremely common knowledge that some things are in the same universe... >Like in the Bard series the haspurs seem a heck of a lot >like griffons... > ....and that isn't one of them. The Bardic universe (and I take it you mean Bardic Voices/Choices and not Bard's Tales) seems to be more sci-fi...if it *is* Velgarth, it's a Velgarth in the very very very very very very very far future. >Tannim is in Jinx High and also the Serrated edge books... > And this is the main one. Bedlam Bards, Tregarde, and SERRA (also Talldeer, possibly) are in the same universe. Characters meet or are mentioned, for one thing. Tannim in JH, or Tannim thinking about Deke in BTR. Or one of the elves in..WoF, iirc, talking faintly about Sun-Descending's problems. Or Di thinking...Lenny, was it? Or...Keith? looked like Oberon (well, that isn't the exact quote, of course). Or Sidhe ISPs in both CC and SR(Spiritride). Of course, SR uses AOL, but some things just can't be avoided, I guess... Of course, V&H takes place on Velgarth, as does Mage-Wars...While having Tarma and Kero lead a task-force against the Church with help from Korendil and Eric and Di Tannim would be fun...it also wouldn't be very realistic (well, it's fantasy, but you know what I mean!). ________________________KORENDIL-+AT+-ICUBED.NET________________________ Korendil, Knight of Amber & Marigold, One in Black, God of Night and All Things Nocturnal, (Pledged) Champion (of Lady Ele), Jester, and Party Coordinator of the Clan of the Pink Wand, Terminally Cute Elfin Warrior, Fairy Godson of the Lilac Fairy, Master of Dreams. ___________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 13:40:28 PDT From: "Ana Cotton" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Worlds Message-ID: <199706192040.NAA10022-+AT+-f58.hotmail.com> >Has anyone tried to figure out if any of the >universes in her books overlap? >Like in the Bard series the haspurs seem a heck of a lot >like griffons... >Tannim is in Jinx High and also the Serrated edge books... Maybe they always come back as humans...? IMO a male Shay'a'chern Companion would have the same options as a Hetero. Companion. Both are pretty limited in the mechanics because of the horse shape. But I believe it would be possible for them to have sexual encounters should they desire it. Though I grant you it probably would be difficult for a female Shay'a'chern Companion but that doesn't neccessarily make it impossible to have some kind of sexual encounter. Companions obviously do not engage in any long term relationships but they all seem to have sexual impluses similar to Heralds (that especially makes since they were once Heralds:)). Yfandes in the Magic Trilogy asks Van if he minds stopping at the next village because she knows a particular Stallion will be there with his Herald. Van agrees and just asks her to block the encounter out so it doesn't effect him. Cymry also has an encounter with Rolan which produces a foal. I don't think it would be all that fair to reincarnate a Shay'a'chern Herald in Companion form and expect it to be content with opposite partners when Hetero. Companions get to continue with their sex drives without a second thought. Of course this is all speculations...there have not been any mention of Shay'a'chern Heralds being reincarnted....but again there are a number of Companions nobody has meet or read about. I also don't think it would be fair to limit a Shay'a'chern Herald to the option of only reincarnating as human. Of course this is just my own personal opinion. **************************************************************************** Are Gifts attached to the body or the spirit? HMMMM I had always thought the spirit but many of you have some interesting points to the body. As I think about this I find contradictions all over the place in regards to this subject. Van as a spirit is just as strong a Mage (if not maybe a little stronger) as when he was alive. Also I think the example of Tylendel needs to be looked at in a different light. Tylendel made some huge mistakes before he died. He was granted full Heraldic burial but what he did was a mistake. I believe he was given a choice similar to the choice Van had when he died. IMO I do not think he was given the option to come back as a Herald or Companion because of the mistakes he made hence he has no use for the Mage-gift. But he did come back as an exceptional Bard (like no one before him or maybe even after) with a wild gift on top of it. So I speculate that the power was part of his spirit but could not manifest itself as a Mage-gift because of the errors in judgement that he made prior to his death. Also in the Oathbound when Keth is in the body of Lastel Longknife Tarma immediately asks if she can still do magic and Keth replies "Not very well. Though I haven't tried any of the power magics that need more training than talent" (pg. 282). So there is not a clear answer here either. Keth's statement of not being able to practice magic very well in that body leads me to believe she is able to pratice some. If she was forever stuck in that body she may have regained much of her power (though maybe not all). I guess it's entirely possible that the power resides partly in the body and partly in the spirit......any thoughts?? I hope I have made sense and not made to many spelling errors:)))) Blessed Be....Jess ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1240 **********************************
