Try Sword and Sorceress there are about 13 of them, and Misty has Tarma and Kethry stories in about 9. A used bookstore is probably your best bet. Also look for the anthologies Christmas Ghosts, Alternate Warriors, Deals with The Devil, Lammas Night, and of course, Sword of Ice(which is edited by Misty herself!). Actually, I think the female shay'a'chern Companions would have an easier time than the males. As someone pointed out earlier today, the nose is considered one of the attractive Companion features. I'm no expert on horse anatomy, but I'd guess either the nose or the tongue could be made to serve in the female case. Of course, with all the secrets Companions keep from us humans, it wouldn't surprise me terribly to learn that they employ a bit of shape-shifting magic from time to time, when no one's watching.... ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 22:24:02 -0400 From: Ben Walum To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: lots and lots Message-ID: <33A9E9C2.329A-+AT+-worldnet.att.net> I'm going to respond to a number of things so if this is confusing, look at former messages. I'm not going to copy all the text because I'm not sure I know how. I case you haven't guessed, I'm new to this. First of all, in response to Randale's sickness, it was always my opinion that it had something to do with a close relationship to Valdemar or simply the land, and that his sickness was a result of magic, some outside -or inside- danger to the land or country, or something to that effect. I can't remember if he and Shavri were lifebonded, but that would account for her interest, concern, ill-health and 'self-sacrifice', if it could be called that. Also, I wonder that since magic is energy, it is possibly related to electricity or radiation, the latter which, of course, can lead to many diseases. As for the discussion on shay'achern (sp?) Companions, I wonder if they experience a kind of 'virtual sex', or mindlove. Because the Companions are so deeply into magic, they might also have sex on the mind level. It is also possible that one partner sacrifices his/her gender in order to have a relationship. I think that indeed, being truly shay'a-chern is something found in the soul and not the body. It seems to have taken about 700 years for Savil and Jasen -- but it can't have taken anything like that long in the early years of Valdemar, because they didn't have a "backlog" of dead Heralds to reincarnate. (Of course, we don't know whether Savil and Jasen were reincarnated in the time between LHM and BTS. This might not be their first time back. For that matter, I suppose the Savil and Jasen incarnations in LHM might not have been their first time around.) The only thing I think we can be pretty sure of is that if Ylsa (or any other recently-deceased Herald) came back as a Companion *soon*, s/he would not use his/her most recent name. Even Ilsa or Elsa might be close enough for someone who had known her to put two and two together -- and at least until recently, the Companions seemed pretty determined to ensure that didn't happen! But remember Sherril's Companion? She let Sherril name her, rather than telling Sherril her name as most Companions do. That could well be a device for concealing a Companion's previous identity, if the previous Heraldic incarnation was either too recent or too notable, and hence too easy to identify. -- Just a guess, but I think it fits the facts. ********************************************* Quickwind wrote: >I understood that gifts were of the body, hence when Kethry >was transferred into the bandit's ( I forget his/her name) she >was unable to use her mage powers other than those that came >by sheer force of will. Selene brought up the same example in more detail, and it's a good one! I'd forgotten that one. But it still only applies to Mage-Gift; we don't know for certain whether the mind-magic Gifts follow the same pattern (i.e., being tied to the body rather than the spirit/soul.) It seems likely that they do, but I haven't come up with proof yet (I'm working on it!) ********************************************** Lady Dawna wrote: >I imagine that Healers can identify the "wrongness" >of cancer pretty easily but that is purely speculation. It would be nice to think they could cure something like cancer --and I suppose it's possible, since we haven't seen much evidence of cancer among the Velgarthian population, unless Randale had some form of it. ************************************** Starfire wrote: >What if the gifts are inherent in the spirit, but because >of the specific needs of the moment, only a few are >available during any one lifetime? Hmm...Are you suggesting that every spirit/soul inherently has all the Gifts, but only develops one or two (or fewer, or occasionally more) in a given lifetime? It's an intriguing idea...Other than divine intervention, though, what would the limiting factors be? I mean, it's clear that most people don't have *any* of the Gifts (as opposed to gifts). I guess I find it hard to accept that a god or goddess would deliberately intervene to suppress Gifts on such a grand scale. It's easier for me to believe that the gods of Valdemar intervene more rarely, in order to provide needed Gifts like Griffon's Firestarting. OTOH, if the limiting factor is the body, then we're back to the same argument that several people have put up before, with a twist. Instead of the body determining the presence of a Givft or Gifts, it would be determining the absence of same. Certainly possible, but I doubt there's any way to be sure...It's fun to think about, though! ****************************************** Jess, you had some really good thoughts along the same lines...and don't worry too much about your spelling. ***************************************** Moonsight wrote: >Does anyone agree with me that Karal got a raw deal in the >storm trilogy?.First his mentor who he looked on as a >surrogate father is assasinated then he has to endure the >agony of being a channel for magic THREE times! and ends >up blind. Maybe Vkandis *could* have protected Karal better, but it would have taken far more direct intervention than was warrented? It seems as though the Velgarthan gods/goddesses only intervene directly when a) necessary in order to save whole populations, and b) occasionally on an individual basis, when asked. The first one, (a), doesn't apply to Karal, and I'm not sure he asks for much for himself, which might rule out (b). I'd like to point out that Vkandis *is* helping Karal; Altra has pledged to remain with Karal always (IIRC). Besides, we don't know what plans Vkandis may have for Karal. His blindness does not appear to hinder him, thanks to Altra; it may turn out that there is some advantage in it, for something Karal must do in the future. (I know, it's hard to think of an advantage to blindness -- but it's not impossible.) (BTW -- I can think of at least one major religion in the RW in which a god could have protected one of his own, but let him suffer because a greater good would come of it. Gods have to look at the big picture...it's part of their job.) ************************************************ Hamlet wrote: >What hints did they give about GALA? Jody Lee did the cover art as well, and I think that she did it in the same time period as she did the covers for Vanyel, 'coz the pictures canbe interchanged once Taran changed into a white outfit. If you remember, Karal was going to look for Florian as a young Herald in about what? 15 years? So, Florian must have instantly been reinc'ed, so that he would be about 15 or so by the time Karal "found" him. I would guess if a Companion could instantly reinc' to a human who would be Chosen, a Herald could instantly reinc' to a Companion. Although, I don't think a Herald would WANT to do that. He'd die, be transformed through natural birth to a Companion, and be living at the same time as all of his old friends, lovers, etc. It would be only about 10 years later for him as a full grown Companion, and being a Companion, he would still retain memories of his life as a Herald--at least I always got the impression that Companions retained their memories--it seems as though they'd have to, since they know that they are reinc'ed Heralds. Anyway, I think it would be uncomfortable to come back when everyone you know is still living. There would be some kind of emotional conflict, it would seem. Maybe that's why we haven't seen Savil and Jays until now--they couldn't(by choice) come back when those they loved were still alive. Bright day, all!! Jacquelle Nunc lento sonitu dicunt, Morieris. This is my first posting ever, so I hope I do it right :) Misty co-wrote the book Elvenbane, and it was a story about elves who ruled over all the humans because they had the magic of illusion, and there were very few ppl who could fight back. The dragons were also on the world, and they had magic also, but they tried to stay hidden. That just tells you about the book...not the story, so don't shout at me for ruining the book :) Also, there is a second book in that series called Elvenblood. I personally enjoyed them both, and Elvenbane was the first Misty book I ever read, so it got me started on her books. Bye for now!
