Okay this is in the last book of the last herald mage and they don't state that the gifts show up when we need them until Arrows of the Queen. In Talia's time that is true but in Vanyels it wasn't since gifts seemed not to matter on what was needed most at the time but what they could get. Even look at the companion of Tashirs havig mind healing to help steady the boy. Only do you really see that statement being true in the Arrows series when Griffin came along with the Firestarting gift. I don't think this was candlemark being used as a distance-unit; rather, they said it in the same sense I might say "we're almost there; we're about an hour (or two hours, or 30 minutes) away," as time being used to measure a journey. > I can't remember -could someone please refresh me- was Leareth = > only killing all children who would develop the Mage-Gift, or the = > ones with Mage-Gift potential as well? IIRC, Leareth was only killing children who *had* shown signs of the Mage-Gift; Vanyel hypothesized that he had watchers for when children were spontaneously using it. It is also pointed out that the Mage-Gift was only showing up in potential (I think it's Savil explaining why she's not needed as a teacher, something like "It [Mage-Gift] was never all that common, and now it seems to be showing up exclusively in potential"), which would also point to Leareth not killing potential. > Argh. (Correct me if I'm wrong here). As I understand it, Vanyel only had Mage-Gift potential, and the potential he had for the other gifts was the same as everyone else (Non-Gifted) had. He never would have been able to use *any* gift had he not been blasted open, and all of the gifts were blasted open, in varying degrees (Mage-Gift the most, then Mindspeech, and the others a small amount). IMO I don't think Companions can or should reincarnate while there are people around who would know them. It would be to difficult for them to do their jobs, so to speak. As was pointed out it would be very difficult on that spirit. So I think that the Herald becomes the Companion, if it chooses that route, many years after his/her death as a human. Companions do retain their memories from when they were Heralds and I believe that the reasons is to give experience, knowledge and advice to their Chosen. Without their memories they would be unable to do this. As far as when a Herald/Companion spirit is reborn as a human, that may be Chosen again as a Herald, I believe the reason why they reincarnate so quickly is because they do not retain their memories from before. Tylendel's spirit was immediately reborn, after his death, as Stef. As you know Stef never knew he was the reincarnation of Tylendel. He may know now that he is a spirit, with Van in Sorrows, but it is never mentioned. Or at least I don't recall it being mentioned. So if Florian is to be reincarnated how will Karal know its him? And Florian should not know Karal if he doesn't retain any memories of his former lives (while being in the physical form). I don't remember the books stating why he had no Mage ability (doen't mean its not there I just have a horrible memory). But I agree I don't think Stef was suppose to have Mage ability. IMO I think the reason for this is because of the fact that Tylendel had misused the gift and caused losses of life (one being his own and almost Van's). Tylendel was given the chance to make up his mistakes to Van and Valdemar but he had to do it in another way, i.e with Stef's extrememly powerful Bardic and pain blocking gift. They wouldn't marry because Randale needed to be free in case he needed to marry to save the Kingdom. And they wanted a baby, for one reason, because of RAndale's illness and needing an heir. Showshadow, in case you haven't received it yet...here's the URL to The Last Straw: http://www.usa.net/firebird/mlstraw.htm I just used the copy/paste command so it should be right. Wow, what a letter! Umm..question, does anyone *really* know how to pronounce all the odd words? Shay A'Chern (sp?)?? Shaych?? Yfandes? Let's see, that's all that come to mind. but I have such a hard time spelling words I can't pronounce. Also, anyone read Misty's collaboration with Piers Anthony "If I Pay Thee Not In Gold"? Anyone read what Piers said about it? I hate to start an "I'm Mad at Piers" fest, but it made me angry. If I recall correctly, it was in one of the Hi-Piers newsletters on the web. I don't remember the details, but it had to do with her being overpaid because, according to him, she is not as good a writer (I disagree!!!!!!!). I always admired him in the past until he slammed the good people on the Xanth mailing list (I am one of them). Any comments: Well, gotta run. My hubby and I are going to a campfire!!! Where you can get other people to obey when you use it? If I'm right, then Vanyel would probably use it, like telling guards to sleep or something. >Well when I was younger I had three bunnies that all shared a very large >cage together. Needless to say we never got any >baby bunnies:) In a lot of animals, one male mounting another is mainly a sign of that males' dominence over the other. We see this a lot in dogs who are constantly trying to establish a heirarchy(sp?) over each other, and therefore see a lot of mounting. Even females do it to other males and females. I've seen elk do it too. I don't know about rabbits, but maybe they do this too. But horses don't do that, so my stallion was definately leaning towards males. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jun 1997 16:32:50 PDT From: "Amanda Upole" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: If I Pay Thee Not In Gold Message-ID: <199706212332.QAA07920-+AT+-f54.hotmail.com> Also, anyone read Misty's collaboration with Piers Anthony "If I Pay Thee Not In Gold"? He didn't consciously remember, but there were certain subconscious clues. The biggest one is when he called Vanyel "ashke", and thought it was just an abbreviation of Van's last name. Piers has done a lot of collaborations this way. I think, though, that IIPTNIG was slightly different in that it went back and forth a couple times, not just once from the first writer to Piers for "polishing". I can't remember for sure, as it's been a couple years since I read it. IIPTNIG is, I think, the only collaboration Piers has ever done with a "big name" writer. As such, I can forgive him for not being able to deal gracefully with the changes from his "normal" collaborations. Writing is a rather solitary occupation, and Piers has said he never liked doing collaborations (though he has quite a few!), so a bit of friction between the authors is not surprising. I hope they aren't really mad at each other, because they're two writers who I think could be good partners -- they seem to have rather similar beliefs and outlooks. Of course, the fact that Piers' name appeared before Misty's on the cover is simply due to the fact that Piers is more widely known, and therefore more likely to attract customers. It has nothing to do with choices made by either author -- most likely, it was decided exclusively by the poublisher. A related phenomenon is the placement and relative size of the book's title compared to the author's name. Take a look at a bunch of books some time, and notice the differences. Books that were written by relatively unknown authors (at the time of printing) will have a large title at the top of the cover, and a smaller author name beneath it. Books that were written by "big name" authors (again, at the time of printing) will have the author's name in huge letters at the top, and the title of the book in smaller letters underneath. ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jun 1997 21:12:20 -0400 (EDT) From: Naec1214-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Vanyel/dreams Message-ID: <970621211219_1012146538-+AT+-emout17.mail.aol.com> Bright the day, listsibs! I have a question that's been bothering me ever since I read the LHMage books. In MPawn Vanyel started having the "ice dream" long before he had even reached Haven. Doesn't that suggest that even though he only had Potential at the time that he was already starting to pick up things by Foresight? The early dreams could be dismissed as just a comparison to his emotional state I quess, but then once he reaches Haven the dreams realy start to seem like he was somehow tapping into his Gift unconsiously.(pg 114). But what makes it realy confusing(to me,anyway) is that 'Lendel states that Van's gifts are "locked" & "not active" after that on pg.185. (((((This next bit is pure speculation so Textevd devotees might want to skip it)))) What I was wondering is if anyone thinks it's possible that while Van was in a dream state that he somehow acessed his gift. I don't think Savil & crew would have noticed, because they already assumed that Van didn't have any Gifts. Most of the Collegium would have been asleep too, and in the middle of all those Gifts I think that whatever small portion of Foresight Van might have used would have got lost in the shuffle. Opinions? Well, and don't we say that "I only live 5 minutes from the mall" and similar uses of time for distance? That's a fairly common use of time, I'd guess. Makes sense to me. However, the fact that they say "only two candlemarks from the palace" indicates that it would be a shorter length of time than an hour, as we've been speculating, 'cause I don't think we'd say "only" two hours from someplace. :) (from the same note:) >So, do you think there could be homosexual companions (already = >discussed, but what do the rest of you people think)? Which is sort of what you said, but the universe in which the = >story takes place in could be different. > The elves were from different COURTS, but they all come from the same place, Underhill and more lately, Ireland. They simply settled in different areas of the country. There are places where the elves from one series mention the elves from another. Again, I don't have the books with me, but I'll look for the refs as I can, ok? :) Kaylie asks: >Umm..question, does anyone *really* know how to pronounce all the odd words? >Shay A'Chern (sp?)?? But you might be thinking of Tanya Huff's "Sing the Four Quarters" and it's following books, in which Bards could Command people to do things. Or perhaps Savil's "Stop-a-mob-in-full-cry" voice that she used. That wasn't Bardic, it was just good use of tone. :) Lynne made a comment about Van's "ice dream" that I am not going to copy-paste in the interest of space but was speculatory of Van having accessed a foresight gift in a dream state. Personally, I think that the ice dream was just an expression of his fears of being emotionally "frozen" or starved so to speak, no real foresight needed. It was after 'Lendel dies that Van has the ice dream again and it changes into the foresight of the battle. Wow! I prolly wrote more this time than I have in a while!
