Yes there are spells that can heal. By The Sword had it when Kero went off and Lordan was in danger of dying and Kethry held him stable until she could get there to cast the spell of healing that she could only get to work on serious wounds. But Vanyel did have the gift of healing. They stated that before because it said he has just enough of the healing gift to save himself. I would suggest several earlier-stated 'legal' moves, and that you do one or all of these things: Many Wiccan spells are quite useful. The Wiccan spellbook by Gerina Dunwich is very helpful. I would also suggest restraining spells or mindhealing spells, which I _may_ be able to help you with on construction. Otherwise I will try to consult with my 'teacher'. Here goes We have noticed that some or all of the Companions can speak with those that are not their Chosen (Yfandes speaking to Stefan, Rolan speaking to Dirk) But we have noticed that, at least in Rolan and Talia's case, they can't speak to each other. What if all Companions can speak to others but it is one of the things that is frowned upon by the other Companions ro higher "authorities". So the Companions must use their Chosens mindsdpeaking ability to communicate with their Chosen. So if their Chosen has a strong ability to speak then they would be able to communicate via mind to mind. But if Mindspeaking isn't the Herald's gift than it is not a talent that particular Companion/Herald share. That would explain why the Companions can bespeak others at odd times, why all Companions speak to their Chosen at the time of Choosing. It also makes sense why Savil speaks to anyone she pleases. She never did care for rules and was onery enough to disobey some of them as long as she wasn't hurting anyone. What does everyone think? When he has gotten the sheep across, he takes again the wyrsa and takes it back where the dragon is waiting. He now leaves the wyrsa there, takes the dragon into his boat and ferries it across the river where the sheep is already waiting. Now he leaves the dragon with the sheep, returns once more to the other side of the river and fetches the wyrsa. One thing I can't understand... if he can't use any spells, how does the mage prevent the dragon and wyrsa eating himself??? I think it's probably recessive, since it's so rare. Dominant genes (like brown hair) tend to, um, dominate. I somehow doubt that it's a single gene, though. All the Gifts (including Mage Gift) are probably tied together in a whole bunch of genes. The pattern of inheritence doesn't seem to be simple enough for just one gene. As far as I can determine, piecing together several different books, it seems to work like this: The Mindspeech Gift comes in two flavors, receptive and projective. The receptive Gift is much more common, and needs less "power". A being with the projective Mindspeech Gift can send out thoughts, which can be "heard" by either a single person, or everyone in the area, depending on how the thoughts are projected. The ability for the recipient to "hear" the thoughts depends on the strength of the recipient's Gift, the amount of "power" used by the sender, and the distance involved. Someone with a sufficiently strong Gift can Mindspeak to *everyone* (as Savil does, IIRC). But the amount of effort involved may not make it worthwhile if the recipient doesn't have the receptive Gift. And of course, non-Gifted beings may panic when they start "hearing" someone else's thoughts, so the courteous sender may refrain from using the Gift in the first place. Talia almost seems to have a negative Mindspeech Gift -- it's harder to Mindspeak to her than to a completely unGifted person. Rolan can Mindspeak to her, but only with *extreme* effort, under idealized circumstances (like her Choosing). This is all my interpretation -- feel free to offer contradictory textevd, as usual. :-) Petri Peltonen wrote: > One thing I can't understand... if he can't use any spells, how does > the mage prevent the dragon and wyrsa eating himself??? And another > thing, the dragon could burn the wool off the sheep and then eat > it... why doesn't it do it? The mage wants to get the three creatures to the place where the ritual is to be performed, without getting any magical "radiation" on them. However, in a life-threatening situation, the mage would be perfectly capable of turning the dragon into a pink newt (or lime green, at her discretion). The dragon, possessing a powerful survival instinct, realizes that the mage is *not* food. Also, I never said it was a fire-breathing dragon.... Angeline wrote: > And, ahh what's "GURPing" ? And what's "iirc" ? I'm blur... GURPS is the "Generic Universal Role Playing System", or something very close to that. It's a roleplaying framework, sort of like Dungeons and Dragons. IIRC is "If I Recall Correctly". IMHO is "In My Humble/Honest Opinion". AFAIK is "As Far As I Know". BTW is "By The Way", not to be confused with "By The Sword". ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1250 **********************************
