And I don't have my books, so no page numbers . Lessee... In, umm, AFlight, I believe, Kris gives Talia a ring as a Birthingday present. She starts to put it on the ring finger of her left hand, but he stops her, saying that that finger is reserved for another ring, yes? But in AFall, when she marries Dirk, doesn't it say something about her having to -move- that ring from that finger to put her wedding ring on? I guess she could've just moved it, and this -is- just a minor thing, but I just wondered if anyone else had noticed. Anyone? Please? Also, about the Talia/Rolan mindspeak thing, I personally think Talia just couldn't hear Rolan. It's like she is mentally deaf, maybe the receptive mindspeak channel isn't opened in her. Rolan obviously can 'speak others, since he 'spoke Dirk and Elspeth at the end of AFall. But Talia has to trance down to 'speak Rolan, so I think she's a little hard of hearing, so to speak. That's like Skif, also. He can 'speak with Cymry, mayhaps her magic boosts his ability a little, but not very well with anyone else, right? Maybe Talia's receptive mindspeak channel was all the way closed, but contact with Rolan opened it just enough so she -could- 'speak him, she just needsto concentrate totally on that task. As to Companions, I think that they can all 'speak with anyone they choose, -if- they broadcast loud enough for the receiver to hear. Like all Companions do, at the Choosing. Make any sense at all? I hope so. Anyways, those're my thoughts for the day. Hope I'm slightly coherent to you. You newbies have nooooooo idea how *sick* we Elders are of some of the most common most pointless, most nitpicky and overdone threads.....so, at Dragoncon, *we asked Misty*. Dead Threads: 1. Van's Healing Gift Q:In Magic's Pawn Savil says that Van doesn't have Healing, but he does in Promise and Price A: Misty says: "He upgraded. Vanyel 1.3!" 2. Yfandes Groveborn? Q: Since Van is such a *special* Herald, doesn't that mean he should have had a Groveborn Companion? I mean, GBs are very fertile, and 'Fandes had kids.... A: Misty says: "NO!" 3. Oathblinded Q: I know that SOMEWHERE I saw a list of Misty's books with "Oathblinded" as an upcoming V&H book, but the list is from 1994! What happened? A: For years, the answer was no. Oathblinded WAS a hoax. On the other hand....according to Misty, there *is* an upcoming V&H hardcover, which (Misty wasn't very clear) either has new stuff and all the short stories we haven't seen before outside of S&S, or binds them all together like Oathbound did. 4. The Firerose Pouches Q: In Firerose, gets 4 pouches of Chinese herbs, each a different color, and one pouch seems to have a different color later on. A: Misty says: "Continuity screw-up." 5. Vahnyel? Vanyel? Vanyell? Vahnyell? Q: How do you pronounce Van's name? Not only do different fans say it differently, but even Shadowstalker has different ways of saying it! A: Misty answered this with "Vahn-yel." But she *also* used "Vanyel," sooooooo.... 6. Two deities, and only two. Q1: Is it just me, or does the Star-Eyed's name sound a *lot* like Vkandis' consort? A1: Misty says: "Really? I *never noticed that!* " Q2: But, then, why didn't the Karsites worship her too? A2: Misty says: "Because it was taken over by male chauvinist pigs!!" 7. Reincarnated companions Q: Are companions reincarnated heralds? How about GBs? A: Misty says: "Heralds get two choices. Reincarnation, or Bermuda. We can continue to right about Valdemar's problems since all the smart ones choose Bermuda. If they choose reincarnation, they can either become Companions and keep all their knowledge and act like smart-asses, or they can become human, lose all memory of past lives, become Heralds again, and always wonder why their Companions constantly smirk in the back of their minds. Groveborn companions are angel-like beings in human form." Oh....and I actually asked the panel (Misty, Larry, Josepha Sherman) on non-human cultures in their works...."Gay companion sex?" Larry said(after the groan-laughter died down and Meg (the head of the Misty track at the con) left the room) "Two words: Long, and entertaining." Misty said: "One word. Acrobatic." On other topics....Owlflight takes place near Lake Evendim a few years after SB, has new characters, lotsa Hawkbrothers, they're just getting used to the new magic, and the barbarians from above Icewall have decided to attack. At the Midnight Misty Bedtime Story we heard Chapter One of Owlflight, the beginning of the next Tannim book (Tempest Fugit, maybe?), and the middle of the next Bedlam Bards book, which totally ends the Kory-Beth-Eric triangle and sets up Eric, it seems, as Di's Guardian replacement! Misty will write more Jen Talldeer books if the publishers want her to, and she suggests writing to them. BTW, we might have dubious feelings about his writing, but Larry is a VERY nice guy--and even though the DragonCon staff SERIOUSLY fucked up with Misty's contract and stuff, she was EXTREMELY nice to us fans. Mark Shepard is pretty kewl irl, too. Oh....and Misty doesn't really know if we'll get a lesbian protagonist any time soon. Oh, and Van and Stef and Fandes and Need have all gone on to "Bermuda";> Warrl's there too, and spends his time critiquing Bards--who are only there since Warrl wants them there;> Oh...and as for WHY Misty forbids MU*s....she says that if she ever DOES make computer game versions (which she says she'll do when someone makes the right offer), they would compromise electronic copyright laws and possibly cost them *$50,000*! OTOH, they says that they'll willingly let whoever gives them $50k blessings on a MUD;> Oh, and at some point we might see Lavan Firestorm's story, as well as modern-day White Gryphon (i.e., the city at the present point in the timeline). Oh, and Josepha Sherman is writing a Highlander novel about Miethos (sp?) and Mark is doing a third Elvendude novel about Unseelie elves using a laser tag hall as a way to steal mortal children. Larry says that the now-evenly dispersed magic is better for the gryphons than the old system, and it makes life easier for the magic-needing creatures. ________________________KORENDIL-+AT+-ICUBED.NET________________________ Korendil, Knight of Amber & Marigold, One in Black, God of Night and All Things Nocturnal, (Pledged) Champion (of Lady Ele), Jester, and Party Coordinator of the Clan of the Pink Wand, Terminally Cute Elfin Warrior, Fairy Godson of the Lilac Fairy, Master of Dreams. ___________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 1997 14:53:59 +0100 (BST) From: Melanie Dymond Harper To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Unsubscription Message-ID: <199706291353.OAA11291-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> > In case you are getting this from the list, to unsubscribe, send an email > to > listproc-+AT+-herald.com > with text > unsubscribe mercedes-lackey > with an empty subject heading. > Sorry, > Shana That won't do anything at all, and will probably confuse the folks at herald.com no end. In the SERRAted Edge Series, one elf (I think Keighvin Silverhair) said that the elves technically tried to aid abused children 'coz children were rare to the elves. (sorry, no textevd, my books are not with me now.) But in the books with Eric, Kory, and Beth, there were no mentions about Elves helping children. They all seemed much more preoccupied with staying alive in the human world and fighting off power hungry people. They didn't seem to bother with children at all, much less saving them.
