My question is: should need provoke activating Gifts, mage Gift, even only in some events, like Elspeth's, but not only accidentaly, as Talia's and Sherrill's, but consciously? Elspeth knew, that Valdemar must have a Mage, so she activated her gift. Previously, before war with Hardorn, Mage Gift wasn't necessary, so none of potentials were active, as I think. Am I wrong? I had no idea that the files were going to be encoded when I sent them out. Here, then, are the plain text forms of those files: ___________________________________________________ The first: This is a post RELMorgan (Morgan (Marilyn) Morey, head of QOC) made to the M. Lackey board over in fantasy forum (on AOL -- jim) regarding D*C. Hello, Everyone! I got home Monday night about 10 PM and am FINALLY caught up on sleep and ALMOST unpacked. I've got some things I need to say, and some things to post from other people, so let me begin by saying THANKS to everyone who came, saw and participated in QOC 97. It's much as Kadia said that last night... "QOC 97 --- It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...." First off.... Misty & Larry are VERY pleased to know the QOC folks are as wonderful and kind as they are. They were both impressed by and honored to know us. I've spoken to them at length the past couple of days, and yes, they'll do it again for us --- when we are our own convention. Just know they think highly of everyone, and send their love and respect. Secondly --- Dragon*Con 97 is the last QOC. There are several reasons for this, chiefly being I'm burned out. Three years of QOC isn't a lot, and I know folks who've run these tracks at D*Con for much longer, but after the year I've had, I just cannot do this again. Not until we go out on our own, and frankly, I can't plan a QOC at D*Con AND a convention at the same time. If any of the QOC staff are interested in hosting the D*Con QOC, then please let me know. We'll work out something. On this same line, let me tell you I could not have done this QOC without the help from everyone. If not for Anne and Amy, there would not have BEEN a QOC this year. So, please add hearty thanks to THEM as well as me, folks. THEY did the majority of the work. Regarding the fiasco at D*Con.... Toriana was fairly correct in what she posted. There were a few other details which aren't that important, but the facts remain: 1. When Misty & Larry were originally contacted by D*Con, I was involved directly with the negotiations. It was accomplished on a three-way call between the Con-Com, myself and Misty, with me present for ALL discussion. I was, you might say, an "ear-witness" to the negotiations, and can truthfully say (as best I remember), the convention agreed to provide Misty with private rooms adjoining rooms, and/or a suite, on a SECURED floor. This was part and parcel of the agreement, which was then put in writing in a contractural form. This "contract" (verbal and written) was violated. 2. Misty fully explained to the Con-com what was going on with the "Guardians" and it was agreed that if she appeared, she would have adequate protection, both from the convention and from her personal body-guard (at that time, a man by the name of John Taylor, who was subsequently released from employment later in 1996). The convention agreed to provide professional bodyguard(s), which they did. I cannot say enough good things about the men from STAR GUARD; not only did they do their jobs well, but treated US as if we were human beings, not idiots running around in weird costumes. I spent a good deal of time with Vince & John (an off-duty Atlanta PD), and know for a fact they not only performed their duties effeciently, but also enjoyed themselves. (John came back to the QOC suite after taking Misty to the airport, and even had a drink or two with us.) So, if you hear a rumor about Misty running them ragged as her own personal "go-fers," ignore it. It's simply NOT true. In fact, Amy and I are eye-witnesses to the fact MISTY waited on THEM!! So, in this, the convention DID uphold their end of the bargain. 3. The problem began when the Highflight crew was put into the Westin on an non-secured floor, with their bodyguard's room two doors down from their room, and theirs was across from the service elevator. Now, actually, I can understand why this was done. The Con-Com was under the impression they needed immediate access to the service elevators for entering and leaving the hotel, which is reasonable. What they did not take into consideration was the fact the rooms themselves were unacceptably located on a NON-secure floor. When asked to correct this, it took SIX hours to make other arrangements. When the solution was presented, they were told to check out of the Westin, and move to the Hyatt. What ensued was a SNAFU to end all SNAFUs. Exactly WHO is to blame isn't known, but suffice to say the result was intolerable. They were offered two rooms on two different floors! On non-secured floors, to boot. When they explained this was in violation of their contract, no one could do anything about it without the approval of the Con-Com, who was NOT available. (Who is seldom available during the con, I might add; it's actually a joke amongst the directors.) In the meantime, Misty & crew are without rooms. Now, I will say this in the convention's defense. The Hyatt screwed up more reservations than they got right, and it quite likely IS the hotel's fault. But the inexcusable part is that it took SIX HOURS to correct, and when the Con-com DID get on this, it took about 20 minutes to fix things. By then, however, it was too late. A case of "too little too late," so to speak. Misty & Larry were pulling out of D*Con itself, and planning only to attend the private readings in the QOC suite --- until I explained that QOC was NOT the same as the main programming line-up for D*Con, at which time they changed their decision and DID attend all of their panels except one. For the record, they were housed at a hotel some distance from D*Con, arranged by Vince from STAR GUARD, and were both safe and happy there. 4. There IS a threat. Never doubt that. Certain incidents occurred during the convention to not only prove this, but emphasize the danger celebrities face from the "lunatic fringe." I won't go into details, but suffice to say Guy, Mike, myself, and others from QOC were THERE when at least ONE incident occurred, and it was scary as hell. We (and the bodyguards) have suspicions as to who was to blame for the incident, but fortunately, no one was injured (then), and everyone acted in a professional manner. It was harrassment, I assure you, and fortunately, only harrassment. 5. Pony was assaulted on Sunday night (actually early Monday AM). I will be posting a letter from him, personally, explaining the occurrence, so won't go into too many details now. Suffice to say, whether or not this was a related incident, it goes to prove there WAS a need for security, not only to protect Misty & Larry & Mark, but that it's entirely possible it could have been ANY of the QOC folks who elected to travel alone. These people are SICK, folks. There can be no other explanation. They are out to HURT people, innocent people, to make their point. I could have been the target, and so could have a lot of other people associated with Misty. It shows they were watching us, and waiting to get one of us alone. This was, incidently, the ONLY time Pony was alone during the con, and I just thank God most of the rest of us travelled in groups. So, don't discount the need for security --- not when one of the SECURITY people was assaulted by parties unknown. (And, yes, they did get one of them, and he did press charges.) 6. To clear up some rumors: A. Misty did NOT abuse her bodyguards. B. Misty did NOT demand that access to panels for D*Con be cleared before she arrived. C. Misty did NOT act in any way as a "prima dona" or demand more than what was agreed upon BEFORE the convention. D. Misty DID put out a lot of her own money to pay for her protection. E. Misty DID do panels for the QOC track, but not for the main D*Con programming. F. Misty did NOT leave the convention not to return; she was THERE for all her panels in QOC but one, including autograph signings. G. Misty, Larry & Mark WERE in need of protection from the "lunatic fringe" out there. H. Misty will NOT be doing any more large conventions in the near future; it's iffy if she'll do any small cons, too, but we're hoping to convince her otherwise. I. Pony was assaulted in the Hyatt hotel lobby ...the hotel DID call in the police, and one of the perpetrators was arrested. Charges have been filed against this person. Pony is all right, just badly bruised. J. Misty is not planning to do anything right now, as long as the convention reimburses her for money she spent from her own pocket. That's about it. If you have any questions, ask. I'll tell you the truth, and I was there, so I know. ------------------------------------------------------------- Here's the second post -- my own notes on what happened: John, As you requested on Monday, here’s my take on what happened between the convention and Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon. This begins last fall, when Larry, Misty, and Marilyn Morey (Director, Queen’s Own Collegia track) had a conference call with Ed Kramer in re: attendance at Dragon*Con and security needs. At that time, it is my understanding that Ed agreed that the convention would provide two (2) adjoining rooms for Misty, Larry and their personal security detail, as well as providing the local security officers. I do not know if a written agreement was ever signed, but the phone call and verbal agreement were attested to by Marilyn Morey, head of the Queen’s Own Collegia track, in my presence, on Sunday night. The trouble started on arrival on Thursday. Larry, Misty and crew arrived at the Westin Peachtree to discover that, not only were their rooms not adjoining, they were on opposite sides of the hotel on different floors. This was obviously not acceptable. It took over six (6) hours to even reach Ed to attempt a resolution to the problem, and there was no one on the staff willing to address the issue. Misty and Larry were scheduled to attend a dinner with a number of the QOC members Thursday evening, and as of the beginning of that dinner, things were still up in the air. Once Ed was reached, it took less than twenty minutes to solve the problem, but before that time, Misty and Larry were tired from their trip, upset about the security issues, and got so disgusted that they turned in their badges and packets, and went and found another hotel, declining any further participation in mainstream programming, but sticking to the QOC commitments that they had made to the fans who had come to see them. While you may think that they were being overly demanding in their requests, please understand that 1) there have been serious threats made on their lives, verified by the FBI; 2) there have been break-ins and assaults at their home, which required them to spend thousands of dollars in a new security system, and 3) there have been assaults on members of the extended household. Now, to address some of the rumors: No, at no time did Misty or Larry or any other member of their household or the Queen’s Own Collegia ask the two bodyguards to perform menial service of any kind (i.e., “going for cokes”.) Misty and Larry bought the guards meals several times, made sure that they were well treated, were obeyed by the fans, and Misty and Larry themselves were most cooperative when the guards made recommendations regarding security issues, despite substantial inconvenience. The guards, by the way (Vince and John) were consummate professionals, friendly with their “charges” but absolutely “on” at all time. On an expedition out to dinner Friday night, I felt like I was part of a major troop movement, just getting everyone into the van for the trip to the restaurant out in Buckhead. No, at no time were Misty or Larry told they could have only one room. No, Misty and Larry did not stalk off rudely and refuse contact with their fans. For those who came to the Queen’s Own Collegia, they were open, friendly, sharing, pleasant and far too close to the fans for the happiness and comfort of the security team, even though Misty, Larry, Mark Shepherd and the rest of the household were all wearing kevlar vests in public. In fact, at one point, when the lights went off abruptly in one session, the team had them covered (both physically and with weapons) in a split-second. Misty and Larry’s issue was with the management of Dragon*Con, not the fans. Ed tried repeatedly to get Marilyn Morey to intercede on his behalf with Misty and Larry, to get them to participate more fully, but, according to available data, Ed was saying one thing to Marilyn and another to everyone else. While it is understood that foul-ups can occur at a function of this size, Ed’s unwillingness to relinquish control of the room issue and allow a director to handle it, combined with his unavailability when help was needed, served to make Larry and Misty feel as though the convention simply ignored their requests and their needs. While it might be countered that Misty and Larry were not as big a draw for fans as say, the “Men Behind the Masks”, there was never less than a capacity crowd at any function where Misty and Larry were scheduled to be, and we frequently had to turn people away, because facilities severely underestimated the number of Mercedes Lackey fans (the room we had most of the activities in was rated for 129, but I counted over 200 at the “Opening Ceremonies.”) I am personally aware of fans who came from as far away as New Zealand specifically because Misty was going to be present. You’ve got to also understand that Misty had previously “given up” on coming to any convention, specifically because of the threats and her concern for her own and her fans’ safety. She didn’t want to endanger the mostly harmless folk around her by potentially exposing them to the lunatic fringe. She came to Dragon*Con specifically as a favor to Marilyn Morey and the Queens Own fans, who had been holding a QO track of programming for a couple of years already. To be so rudely treated by Dragon*Con was, frankly, a vindication of her opinion of science fiction conventions in general. If you can keep me posted regarding any other rumors or comments you might hear, I’d appreciate it. I’ll be happy to help clear up any misconceptions that might arise. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Here's Morgan's post for Thursday, re: Pony White, Misty's bodyguard: Subj: Re:Cards for Pony Date: 7/3/97 10:19:31 PM From: RELMmorgan I've heard from pony today, and just wanted to say that he's ended up with two fractured ribs for his trouble. And, the guy went to court, and they let him off with 'time served,' meaning he spent the night in jail and is now walking the streets again. Justice? Not in my book, but no one's asking ME. You can drop Pony a card at the Highflight POBox, yes. I'm sure he'll appreciate them. Just remember --- there's bound to be fall-out about this on the 'Net. if you hear a rumor, fight it with the TRUTH. don't argue; that's useless. Just state the truth as has been told by those of us who were THERE. The truth WILL win out in the end. I'm down at a friend's house for the weekend, but when I get back to Orlando on Monday, i'm going to be working on getting a hotel for the relax-a-con, Highflight 0.5, believe me. It's going to happen, people, but it'll take a lOT of work for everyone. We'll need LOTS of fund-raising ideas. If you have one, contact Anne. I've s/u/c/k/e/r/e/d... um ... asked her to head up our fund-raising committee, and she accepted. As time grows closer, i'll be posting more info, and other ways folks can help, even from whereever they live. hugs, Morgan (On someone's else's computer and goin nutty!) =============================================================================== All right, Lackey fans, there they are in plain-text, for your perusing pleasure. Again, I apologize for yesterday's mess. I'll keep the list posted as I hear from Morgan or Misty. Eldan coped with it by visiting her in her dreams, so he wasn't physically with her, but emotionally with her instead. HE knew they were lifebonded or else he wouldn't have done that. I've a Qn here... IIRC, in "Born to Run", Ross (the ghost) said something about Fox (FX) having a kind of special aura that none of the other spirits did except for one that _he_ knew as "The Old Man" (or something like that, sorry I don't have textevd, the books are a bit far away right now). Could that special aura be due to the fact that Fox had been not entirely "spirit" but kitsune, and could the Old Man have been one of the dragons (Chinthliss/Thomas)? How about communal need? During Van's time, people with talent were being actively hunted down and killed by Leareth(Ugly dude who blood carved canyon)(Magic's Price). So what if the net that he created to protect Valdemar also sent those gifts into hiding? So that the Elspeth's ability was triggered by being around Companions and because she was the ideal person to go hunting for other mages when Valdemar finally needed them again. So need in combination with desirability/usefullness. ...? Today just kind of concentrated everything I hate about this list into one groan-packed parcel! We had the chain letter, and the one-liners, and the dead, overworked thread question, and the person who can't master snipping, and the encoded file...why...it's a good thing I was in a good mood when I got my mail this morning, or I might have just left!;> First of all: guys, e*nough* about Jim's letter. We all know now that it was just a horrible mistake, and we don't need all the "me too"s either. And before anyone goes and flames Sara--what she posted was slightly different, and while there was some duplication between them, Sara's had stuff Jim's didn't, and vice versa too, I think. As for the chain letter--great, we all know everyone's upset, but there's no reason to "me too" on that one, just as there isn't on Jim Fox-Davis' first few attempts at posting the DCon info. Gods, Deniz--that essay on Mage-genes was almost worse than the whole Misty Magic vs. Physics thing last fall!;> Sheri and Jack asked: >Does anyone have any idea what the new book >'Owlflight' is about? Umm...yes...and...I...already *said* so in the DCon post, I'm pretty sure, but yet again: According to Misty, it takes place a few years after SB. Everyone's putting the pieces back together...most of it takes place near Lake Evendim, and for the first time we're gonna see the Barbarian Hordes. You know, the guys over Icewall the gave birth to Ma'ar and a few of his later incarnations (Leareth, possibly--at least he centered up there. It's possible his Leareth body was Hawkbrother, or something, showing his great dislike for the Tayledras in that life). From what I heard, at a Misty Reading of Chapter One, the main character is a 13 year-old boy. He's an orphan, whose parents vanished. He's taken care of by the small little town near Evendim that has him apprenticed to one Wizard Justin. From what the chapter described, it seemed the Wizard was teaching him Fetching and not Magery, though, which raises concerns of "If this kid is in Valdemar, why the hell isn't he in Haven yet with a working amount of Fetching?" And he IS in Valdemar, since they mention circuiting Heralds. Anyway, the cover is pretty nice (saw it at the Con, another Jody Lee like every other Velgarth), and while the beginning was a tad slow, at least we're gonna see more of post-Storms Velgarth. Molly asked: > I was wondering if anyone knew if Kerowyn and >Eldan were lifebonded. To answer you flatly: No. Misty has said in the past that the only lifebonded couple in BTS is Selenay (took me a sec to remember her name) and Daren. End of story. Anna said, and she REALLY REALLY REALLY needs to learn how to snip: >I was thinking about why any of Heralds since Van to Elspeth, though they >had to have potential Mage Gift, was not a Mage - of course, they have >forgotten how to use it, how to recognize Mage's gift, but many of Van's >descendants before Elspeth had potential. My question is: should >need provoke activating Gifts, mage Gift, even only in some events, like >Elspeth's, but not only accidentaly, as Talia's and Sherrill's, but >consciously? Elspeth knew, that Valdemar must have a Mage, so she activated >her gift. Previously, before war with Hardorn, Mage Gift wasn't necessary, >so none of potentials were active, as I think. Am I wrong? Okay....Misty's definition of "Potential" differs from what "potential" generally means. In Misty's novels, it shows that someone has Mage-gift, but only latently. It can't be used, and except for certain circumstances (Lendel tapping Van's through the lifebond) is untappable. It doesn't mean that they have the ability to use, but just need to learn how. The Potential seems to be passed down the bloodline, the in the Valdemaran Royal Line, and in some people it's the full-fledged gift instead of the Potential. Forget Vanyel. He was a *fluke*. Normally, someone with Potential can never use their gift, and probably don't even know it is there. The reason that no-one post-Van and pre-El in the Royal line was a mage is that they either only had Potential--or, like in El, the gift was trained as Farsight. It was there in some of them, the Mage-Gift, but they didn't know and there was no-one in the country to realize it was there or to tell them how to utilize it. The reason Elspeth learned to use it was that finally Valdemar *needed* Mages again, the Gods and their minions wanted her to use it, and the Wall was gonna come down in a few years. "Need" did not provoke Elspeth's gift. She most likely, with her aversion to Fate, would like to believe that it was pure happenstance that she had the active Gift. Alternatively, though more unlikely, Fate gave her the Mage-Gift because Valdemar needed Mages. Someone cannot "activate" their Potential...you either have the Gift, or you don't. If you don't, you might have Potential. If you have Potential, someone somewhere might know how to activate it, but that's only rumors 700 years ago from Vanyel's ashke. And the circumstances that Van had to activate HIS gift were none too repeatable. Talia's Gifts were not "activated" in the same sense as Vanyel's were...Talia *had* the Gifts, and in due time they would have surfaced. The situation shocked her into them early. On the other hand, if El had only had Potential, it would have taken a LOT more than an idle wish to give her the Mage-gift. Heehee...here I thought I'd have to snip so I didn't quote too much of Anna's post, and now this is twice the size;> Coni Newman said: >When I read the first book, it said that all of the Gifts were there, >however, I figured that they were present in varying degrees.. his Mage >Gift being the strongest, his Healing and Bard Gifts being among the >weakest. I hate to be rude, but....why are you pointedly ignoring what I said? I mean, really, I've answered this twice now. Savil first states that Vanyel has every Gift but Healing. She THEN states that, of those gifts he has, they vary in degree. His like of Healing was a continuity screw-up in Book 1, and Bardic being there was probably just something Misty never used... Jim said: >Please accept my abject apologies for that cock-up. Given. Yer a newbie...we have to give you time to learn how everything works Oh, and a quick question--why bother asking "Has anybody read such and such Misty book?" This is a list of over 400 people. Most of them are ardent Misty fans who pick up any book by her they find. Therefore, there's a pretty damned good chance that at least a *few* of them will have read whatever book you want to know if anyone's read.
