I don't know how interesting it is, but I found Misty right after I stopped reading mysteries and got into the fantasy genre. R. A. I was complaining about this to a friend of mine, who said that Misty was good... I read the descriptions of some of her books, and didn't think it'd be very good... So, next time I complained to this friend of mine, she practically forced me to pick up the Vows and Honor set... I was hooked from then on... Plus, Mel does not have the time or the inclination to do that as she said in her post. We believe that most people who don't follow the list's few rules are basically not doing so because they are not aware of them, or don't understand the need for them. Plus, I don't think the list would benefit at all, from having a few of the people who don't follow the rules tossed. Hopefully the council will tend to minimise that. ____________ then Bill Pomeroy wrote: >Ok, What is this council could someone personally email me the info on this? Well, I think I already covered that above. But let me say it again. IIRC (not that I was here, but so I've been told) this list has functioned for over 3 years with only one person being forcibly removed from it. That shows that the list can function without needing to ban people frequently. Basically, we are trying to help Mel do what she has done until now and will hopefully go on doing. Try to keep the list a fun, free environment where we can all relax. I was a lonely bookworm who was very uncomfortable in the school I was going to, and Talia's triumph over her various problems helped me get through mine a lot better than I would have otherwise. Arrows of the Queen really got under my skin and made itself at home...I've always loved Misty because she threw me a lifeline when I really needed it. I triumphed with Talia when she found ways (both out of and)around her problems, and found friends. When LHM came out, I was in a bad situation, and reading about how someone else dealt with it, and survived let me see that not everything is as bad as it looks, and you can always make a new start. It's amazing how much reading about someone else's (even if ficticious,) problems can make your own less traumatic, especially when they not only survive, but do a little good while they're at it. The teachers- the very people that where supposed to help me learn didn't in kindergarden because I had my own way of doing things and it wasn't her specific way- but the other kids liked it. Then in 3rd grade, the teacher did her best to crush me- and nearly did I would weep and thretan to kill my self if I had to go to school - nearly went trough with it too. middle school wasn't as bad- but by middle school I had no wish to make friends- I had pulled into myself- I would be the smartest kid- with all the answers but no good friends and if I was attacked I fought back because I didn't trust the addministartion or my teachers- kind of like Talia & Van didn't trust anyone, its hard to trust again- even when you know they won't break you trust. But did any of you notice that it seemed like Misty intro'ed a number of ideas, but then dropped them? In real life this happens all the time, but in books and movies "nothing happens without a reason". I was surprised, not really bothered. One example is that the Chinese doctor gave her the sleeping herbs and told her that it might give her really vivid, disturbing dreams that might open avenues of magic (or something like that). But then nothing was said after that. I have not noticed this in any of the other Misty books, but in this book I noticed it several times. Am I out of my mind? Did I skip pages or something? Message-ID: <33C70879.211A-+AT+-eonet.com> Greetings all, The first time I ran across Misty's books it almost didn't happen. I've been a bookaholic for a LONG time and I've developed a few predudices in that time, one of them being if I run aross a trilogy I won't buy it untill I can find ALL the books at one time. Nothing I hate more then to get involved in a story only to read - to be continued, or see "bah bah", etc. Most of the authors I enjoyed as a kid are dead so I'm always hunting for new authors. I ran across a paperback of MPawn in the used bookstore I haunt on occassion. The cover looked interesting and the writeup sounded good but then I discovered it was a Trilogy! Argh. Fortunatly after some digging in the stacks I finally found the other two. Then when I got home and started reading it I discovered that the lead character was shacyh - I figured Oboy, this book is going to go to hell real fast! I was very happy to be proven 100% wrong. While Vanyels preferences for partners was a part of the story it was not the end all and be all of the book. He was a decent human being and one I would be truly honored by if such a person called me their friend. A truly wonderful book. After I finished it I contacted the Science Fiction Book Club and purchased all the books they had currently in print. I ended up buying original hardcovers of the Storm (I agree with others - not up to snuff conpared to her earlier books) and Gyrphon series. I've also had to buy a second copy of the LHM hardback from SFBC because I wore the first one out! There is a very small number of books which I consider worth rereading, Mistys stuff is on that list. By the way on a completly different note for those of you who enjoy Science Fiction, such as Pournelles mercenary books you should check out Lois McMaster Bujold. I purchased a copy of Borders of Infinity (a collection of short stories) after reading it I ended up picking up the balance of his books an excellent read. Unfortunately, when a rule gets broken accidentally, and the person is still removed from the list, it real downer to everyone who is left. me>I'm in the process of rereading the LHM trilogy right now... and I just me>want to say... it is actually better the second time around! (And I me>don't see how that's possible, since I enjoyed it so much the first me>time). Joseph--Hear! Hear! I really did enjoy those books a lot. To any QO member at DragonCon--Did Misty happen to say whether she'd be writing any more SERRAted Edge novels? I like those. They're sometimes painful to read, but a couple of those books, I couldn't put down. Tracy--_Arrows of the Queen_ was the first Misty thing I read. My friend Cheryl used to work at American Airlines with Misty. She told me that she had this friend at work who had just written a novel, that it was pretty good, and I should check it out. So I went to the Sam Houston Bookstore (now defunct, alas) in the Galleria and bought it. Like you, I almost didn't take it home. I think page 2 or page 3 is almost entirely in italics. I didn't want to read that big a chunk of italics, so I finally skipped over it, and continued reading. That's when I got hooked. It was like reading a cross between "Weyrsearch" and _Dragonsong_ by Anne McCaffrey. As with Lessa, I just _had_ to know what would happen with Talia. Anyway, I'm really grateful to Cheryl for introducing me to the Herald books. :) Side note- I didn't like the cover, either. Talia and Rolan were fine, but the patchwork look to the rest of the cover didn't appeal to me. R. A. Jack-- Oh, don't stop reading mysteries! Anne Perry writes quite good ones, if you like Victorian historicals. And Lackey's _Sacred Ground_ was pretty good. (A. Sleep, Geriatric Surgeon) --ROFL!!!!! Mark--Lois McMaster Bujold is great! I could sit at that woman's feet for hours and study her method of plotting. She's a genius. I've read as many of her books as I could find. I've got _Mirror Game_ around here somewhre. It promises to be excellent, but I've only read about the first chapter. Then I mislaid it. Maybe to Nyara, who might have "needed" to hear it more than any others? No textevd, I don't actually own the Winds or Storms books, so can't look it up, at least not in time to make the message timely..... Need's story was that the soul within was the blacksmith who forged her, who quenched the sword in her own body and blood. The women's temple she served had been raided by greedy men and the priestesses/ servants of the Goddess residing there had almost all raped or killed. The only ones left were the smith and one of her apprentices ( and I forget how they survived, maybe someone with the books handy could look it up and correct any details I'm misremembering.). THe smith gave her life to forge this weapon to avenge this crime and others against women. The song is really cool, sung by Juanita Coulson (sp?) who has a very Eartha Kitt-type voice (just what it sounds like, earthy and rich and strong) and a pounding forge-like rhythm... Also, nice cool mint-julep sheeps in apology for somehow managing to send another whole message along with what I *thought* I had clipped into my last message.... and anyone I irritated with my sarcasm lately. Wedding is three weeks and counting... moving was last week, and we are trying to dig out still and find enough room for the guests.... Can't wait but wish there was more time to fix all the little details.... ~Elisiargh! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 1997 12:23:05 -0500 (CDT) From: Gypsy To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: I first read Misty....... Oh, I don't think we have a problem of the listowner not being serious about the rules. Just of the listowner wanting the rules to be respected without an atmosphere of fear settling in. >Unfortunately, when a rule >gets broken accidentally, and the person is still removed from the list, it >real downer to everyone who is left. Exactly my point. Hopefully we will be able to prevent people from breaking rules accidentally and make the list a happier place all round.
