I went from there, read The Black Gryphon, then went on to the Arrows, LHM, Winds, Oath, then finished up with By the Sword. I didn't get to read The Silver Gryphon until later since it hadn't been finished. :) I managed to read every single Valdemar novel in print in a span of four months. :) That takes addicted to an ALL new level. :) Nighveil ----------------------------------------- Joseph W. I'm sorta a newbie, having been a member last fall and winter until I got to bogged down with work , kids etc., to keep up. But now it's summer and I have a lotta free time so checked out the " weeks worth of mailing list " and found I really missed it. ---Chain letters, long unreadable attachments, grumbles about short posts, and all *lol*----A chocolate-mint sheep to you, JFD, I know you didn't mean it, we love yo anyway, and in readable form it was- well, --interesting. Makes me glad I wasn't there(at D-Con)-- I hate crowds, anyway. As for my first Misty, My sister-in-law sent me the AOQ trilogy for Christmas about six years ago. I was a die-hard science fiction fan, but had never read any fantasy at all. In fact, Id always been a little insulted that book stores included fantasy in their science fiction sections. Well, needless to say, after the first few pages I was hooked. As of now, I've read all of Misty's books and co-authored ones, most of MZB, and A. McAffrey, and just finished M. Rawns Sunrunner books(great storyline, but you need a geneology chart to keep all the characters straight.) I think my favorites are still LHM; Ive read them about four or five times and they keep getting better. This album is also worth having for "The Leslac Version", wherein Tarma and Leslac tell two significantly different versions of an incident. :) Herald Darla Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 08:50:06 -0700 From: "Stacey Clements (Volt Comp)" To: "'mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk'" Subject: RE: Van, Stephan, Yfandes, and Need Message-ID: <41CD7A798584CF11B51400805FD4C60D02964D3E-+AT+-RED-100-MSG.dns.microsoft.com> The impression I got regarding Van is this. First, the nature of Van's demise was that of a Final Strike so I think his choices were a little different than those of many others (i.e., he knowingly sacrificed himself to stop the dark armies). He was able to stay "Van" as a spirit extension of himself, yet was tied to Sorrows as border guardian. Second, he was the last of his kind and needed to continue to protect the kingdom until such time as there were new guardians/mages or the need was no longer there. I think his relationship to the Web might also have had something to do with that option, but have nothing more than a feeling to support that position. Third, he was physically tied to Sorrows and could not leave. You might recall that Altra had to jump to Sorrows to get a branch (something physical) and return to the Plains with it so that the trio could have something to "fix" on in the Plains to be present for the casting. Finally, I think that Van's presence in Sorrows was much the same as the nature of "Need" and the blacksmith sorceress who forged her. Hers was a form of Final Strike as well. Anyway, it's just my opinion. I was a bit disappointed that both Need and Van/Sorrows went off to Bermuda at the same time. It makes things seem so final for the legacy characters. I hope Misty has some great plans for maybe Talia's and Selanay's kids. It'd be fun to have Elspeth and Darkwind start a fam. I'm sure that Treyvan and Hydona would really enjoy the opportunity to raz him about the perils of parenthood considering all they've endured in teasing from him regarding their gryphlets. :-) --Stacey ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 11:56:26 -0500 From: "Dawn L. Message-ID: <19970714.115654.3278.1.snowshadow-+AT+-juno.com> Hmmmmm...... When I was in tenth grade five years ago, a friend of mine found me reading a Piers Anthony Xanth book. We talked a while about fantasy novels, and the next day she came back and dumped the LHM trilogy into my lap. Of course, a week later I was hooked, but without the resources to buy any more books. For the next three years the only Misty books I saw were the Tregarde series...then I got into college, got a job, and the first major purchase was the LHM trilogy for my very own. The rest is history, as Misty dominated my bookshelf (when I am in possession of my books), and I only have six or seven books left to find.
