First, I want to say to Greg that the demon in If I Pay Thee Not In Gold name is Ware in his male form and Wara in his female form. Now, here are some of my not so favorite good guys (don't flame me). 1. Gwena (don't ask why) 2. Firesong ( attitude problem ) 3. Gala (I suppose I have to have someone to blame 'Lendel's death) Here's an interesting tidbit to munch. The Star-Eyed and Vkandis might've used to be consorts!! You see, on the first page of chapter 11 in Storm Warning An'desha referred to the Goddess as Kal'enel. Before that, on page 180, Karal is reading and he stops to muse a bit. " When had the order of the Priests of the Goddess Kalanel-the consort of Vkandis- disappeared, for instance? And when had Her statue vanished from its place beside Vkandis' in the Temples?" That is an exact quote. You see! Isn't that dandy. IMHO hte one about Savil and Starwind had no plot to speak > of, and the one about Van and the guardsman was terribly out of > character for Van. I couldn't agree more. What that story amounted to was the equivalent of a brief encounter in a bathhouse. Knowing Vanyel, I really don't think he'd go in for that sort of thing. Further, it doesn't jive at all with Van's reminiscences of Guardsman Jonne. In the first chapter of _MPromise,_ Van remembers a rather sweet but ill-fated relationship of two or three months. IMHO, the story in _SoI_ made it seem tawdry and cheap. Who wrote that story anyway? If memory serves it was Mark Shepherd. What was he thinking. Maybe if there is another anthology like this, the stories shouldn't involve major characters from other sources. After all, Misty's strong point has always been characterization. Many of her characters are as well rounded as any real person. I doubt anyone, no matter how good an author, could have the same feel for them. No-one could write Van, Talia, Elspeth, etc. like Misty, so I think they should create new characters or focus on ones Misty didn't spend a lot of time on, which the best stories in _SoI_ did. > Summerstar Tanager ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 23:10:54 -0400 (EDT) From: stuwaddl-+AT+-ACS.EKU.EDU To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Message-ID: as i remember there was a poem/song in the back of one the bows & honor book that gave the star-eyed's form & the coresponding form & another one that delt exclusivly with her consorts forms but i could be mistaken it has been over a year sense i read them (they stayed for ever in the used book store until i went to put them on holdthen they were gone) troy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 23:16:56 -0400 From: "SJB" To: Subject: Braid:5 fav scenes,5 fav books,10 fav fantasy characters,Tayledras/Shin'a'in,psych/Falconsbane. However the diagnostic criteria has 4 parts to it and delusions and hallucinations, etc., are only in part 1. In order to have a diagnosis for schizophrenia a person must meet the other 3 areas. The 2nd area is called Social/Occupational dysfunction: "For a significant portion of the time since the onset of the disturbance, one or more major areas of functioning such as work, interpersonal relationships, or *self care* are markedly below the level achieved prior to the onset." (DSM-IV). Also some of the 1st symptoms of the disorder include "deterioration in hygiene and grooming." (DSM-IV) So while poor hygiene does not make the diagnosis it plays a fairly important role when looking at the whole picture. My experience with people with schizophrenia is that poor hygiene is a very common symptom. OTOH the chances that schizophrenia, in the true sense of the word, exists in ML's world is probably unlikely. But there is no doubt that Falconsbane had a very serious mental disorder:)) **************************************************************************** No name except Rachel for now wrote:) >Hi, I'm a newbie, so please forgive in advance any atrocities I may >commit! In the beginning Arrows of the Queen when Talia is talking about how inconvenient it would be if each of her fathers wife s lived in a different house' and she could see the husband "running from house to house intent on doing his duties to each of his wife s." (Not an exact quote, but you get the idea). After Talia has arrived at the collgium, she is in the library and has just met Kris. He has insulted her about how easy somthing is and she replys with "Just about as easy as stuffing a chicken". There is one part at the end of Arrows of the Queen where Talia and Skif and Gryphon are sitting in the dinning hall, talking about something or other. Skif has picked Gryphons pockets clean to prove some point. He turns to Gryphon and hands him a platter full of his possessions and says "More greens brother?" There is a line Karl says in one of the storm books, but I don't remember where it was. It is one of my favorites; "I am expendable. I am stupid. Here I go" That s all I can think of right now. I know there are more, but I am exhausted. Sorry I have no really accurate scenes, but most of them are from Arrows of the Queen, and both of mine are lent out right now. As far as dogs go, didn't Kero's company have those really fast whippet-like dogs to carry messages? ___________________ Characters, yikes: F'lar, Lessa & Jaxom (with dragons); Silk, Barak and Beldin; Killashandra; Talia; Kris Bjornson; Ayla; Lovelock; Ender; Kit Fielding (yeah, a Dick Francis character, but I couldn't help it); Amberdrake, Skan and Zhaneel; and Candy & Terry (from David Palmer's Emergence - anyone read that?) ___________________ top 6 authors - I will buy them no matter what!! 1) Mercedes Lackey (unsurpassed at writing an enjoyable tale) 2) Anne McCaffery (great plots) 3) Dick Francis (every one a winner) 4) Jean Auel (like she puts out so many to buy, anyway!) 5) Orson Scott Card (Lovelock, Songmaster & Ender's Game got him on my list) 6) Judith McNaught (romances, but oh what romances - I really laugh & cry) next 4 - I'll probably buy, but no guarantees: 7) Stephen King (can tell a great story, but writes for money too much) 8) Dean Koonz (starts mix-N-Matching plots/characters for some novels, but if plot is original, can tell a good one) 9) David Palmer (Threshold and Emergence were superb, but haven't seen anything new) 10) Star Trek (preferably TNG) books (can't help it - I'm hooked) If anyone wants to discuss any of these non-Misty topics off-list, please e-mail me at RSTTLT-+AT+-ROHMHAAS.COM - I don't want to over-fluff our list!! IIRC An'desha answers that in Storm Breaking--- An'desha is talking to the Shin'a'in ambassador, who is shocked that An'deshas clan would disown him for wanting to be a mage. He says something to the effect that a clan would want what's best for a child, and would send him to their Tayledras brothers with their blessing, if that's what the child wanted, to learn magic. An'desha answers that his clan was so small they didn't want to lose even one, which was why they wouldn't let him go. So it seems not to be cultural, just blind pig-headedness by one particular small group/ person. Not so unusual in this world, either! (I even have MZB's 'Restoree', which she says is the first book she'd had published!) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'd like to introduce a term (if it doesn't exist already) for those delightful little bloopers we spot in Misty's stuff. Following the example of the Trek blooper-spotters, I call these things 'YAMI's (Yet Another Misty Inconsistency), and offer this as a primary example - In 'Oathbreakers', Misty has Kethry casting magic spells in and near Herald Roald's hunting lodge, which is *definitely* within the borders of Valdemar. She does illusions and even reaches for, and achieves, Adept status there, and uses a jesto'vath (sp?) on the tent later (although the jesto'vath be in Rethwellan; textevd isn't clear on their location at that point, IIRC. All this magery getting tossed around - *and not a single vrondi bugs her about it*!!!!! Compare this with the treatment that Kero's mages get in BTS - they nearly go bonkers just travelling inside the border, and are afraid to cast any spells at all! (Textevd is welcome, please; I'm running on memory here, and for me, that's .) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A couple of my favorite scenes: 1: T&K and the snowbattle with the kids in Oathbreakers, where T gets revealed as the Snow Demon. 2: Oathbreakers again: T demands K's life from the Star-eyed, regardless of the cost. Kind of saying that they were like a bunch >of pampered lap dogs in that they weren't used to anything strange. 1) You'd need to know about dogs before you could develop that kind of figure of speech. 2) Besides, in BTS, one of Kerowyn's troopers, the guy from the south-name starts with a G, (me -+AT+- computer, books-+AT+-other side of room 8-{)# ) trains dogs as messengers for the Skybolts. In fact, when he gets some larger dogs suitable for more complex missons, Kero worries that the other mercs are going to start calling the Bolts "the dog and pony show." I am a newbie I guess, but, having read the threads, I thought that I'd add my two cents: 1. On the subject of dogs in the books - in By the Sword, Kerowyn has an officer in her mercenary troops who is described as being very black, and coming from Geyr(? not sure, no textevd) who has 2 very scrawny, very fast, ugly little dogs that are used as runners who carry messages for little balls of fat. Later on, he has bigger dogs that are possibly from the Tayledras? 2.On the subject of my first Misty experience - My very very first experience was with MZB's Sword and Sorceress, but I really didn't pay much attention to who the authors were, because I had plenty of MZB to read, so it must have been a year or so later that I bought Magic's Pawn when it first came out. Desperate for something good to read on our family vacation (!!!) I recognized the author, and grabbed it...well, when we got home, I had to call my friend (who had introduced me to MZB and fantasy in general) to tell her to read this book - and she had just bought it (Great minds think alike you know!) But she hadn't gotten to the part when Vanyel loses 'Lendel, so I told her I'd call her back later...Misty was the very first author to make me both cry and laugh aloud. 3.
