I pronounce Vkandis as Vuh-kan-dis ,& I do the same sort of thing for Yfandes (Yeh-fan-days). Ma'ar is Ma-are, Leareth is Lair-ith, Ulrich is Ul-rick, Karal is either Karl or Kaw-ral, Solaris is So-lar-iss, Selenay is Sell-en-ay, Talia is Tal-ee-uh (Tal as in talon),Tale'sedrin is Tale-sed-ren, K'Vaia is Kay-vai-uh, Mekeal is Me-kay-al, Meke is Me-kay, & Tayledras is Tay-lay-drass. Ok, I think that covers everything so far. I have a question for any Heralds out there. I'm going to design my own set of heraldic Whites, & I was wondering if I could put a little bit of pale (practically white) blue on them or maybe a touch of silver. Does anyone out there know if that's possible? I'm not a member of Queen's Own, so I don't know how the rules go here in RL, but I know that Elspeth insisted on white, and -only- white. She said something to the hertasi who designed her new ones in WoFury, I think, about how they had to white, not ecru or eggshell or light pink, but -white-. So, I guess if you want to be true to the books, that's what I'd think you'd need to do. Maybe some other accents, say w/ jewelry or hair ornaments? As to pronunciation, it seems no one 'hears' things much the way I do... I hear Talia as "TAY-lee-ah". And Selenay as "SELL-in-ay". Karal is "Kuh-RALL" and Melles is "Mell-es". Ma'ar is "Muh-ARE" and -ashke- is "ASH-kay". Therefore Ashkevron is "Ash-kay-vron", since Stef said -ashke- was part of Van's name already. Mekeal is "MEKE-ee-all" and Meke is "MEKE". And all the vales are a very short 'k' sound before the rest, like "k-Sheyna", almost like "kuh-SHAY-nah". Strangely, I hear Vkandis much the same, "vuh-KAHN-dis", with a -very- soft 'vuh' sound. Solaris is a RL word/name, so I just pronounce it like the O/S for a Sun 'puter. Hmm, speaking of pronunciation, how does Misty pronounce her full name? Is it like the Spanish pronuciation of Mercedes, "MER-seh-deze"? Or, heaven forbid, like the car? I'd also be interested in hearing this review of Owlflight, should Meg distribute it. I guess if you wanted them to be *true* whites they would have to be WHITE and nothing else. For all of those who disagree listen to what Elspeth has to say in Winds of Fury on pg.37 at the bottom. But I'm sure if you chose to improve on them no one would mind. I however would like to see the improvements. Another thought is that the heralds are supposed to be in all white so that they are "pure", and any inkling of color, might betray that the heralds aren't as pure as all the common people think.
