Same holds for Oathbound and Oathbreakers (Vows and Honor), By the Sword, Magics Pawn, Promise and Price (Last Herald Mage). Different book clubs have offered them in hardback editions, but not separate volumes, but 3-in-1, etc. The first to come out in hardback from the publisher was either the Black Gryphon or Winds of Fate (whichever was published first). I only remember this because it was my "flag" that said that Misty had "made it" as a writer in the publisher's eyes (i.e., they were willing to risk hardback (thus more expensive) production and were confident they could sell enough of them before the paperback was released to those who couldn't afford the cost of a hardback). ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 09:35:44 +0800 From: "Angie" To: Subject: Re: Hulda/re-reading/lute-breaking Message-ID: <199708020135.JAA23310-+AT+-larkspur.singnet.com.sg> Molly wrote: : I have a question about Hulda. Surely the people from other lands have seen Companions and yet do not know the exact details (i.e they are NOT horses). So why don't they covet the Companions as they do for the Shin'a'nin battlemares??? Plus, even if the companion didn't help her with this all heralds are somewhat, in my opinion, dependent on their companions. (I mean, most of the time when the companion dies so does the herald.) And Hulda didn't want Elspeth devoted or depending on anyone else. Elspeth even said when Talia found her in AofQ, crying in the garden, Hulda was her only friend. I think Hulda strove for that and wanted it to stay that way. Well I just wanted to add my thoughts on that subject, because the AofQ series is one of the series i have read, and not to long ago either. My current theory is that all the raw magical energy is the same, whether it comes from nodes, ley-lines, etc. (Blood-magic energy is tangibly different, though -- it's "contaminated" in some way.) Thus, the bleaching is related to the amount of energy channeled, not necessarily its source. A good example of bleaching of a non-Adept is Skandranon's experience at the end of Black Gryphon. He was bleached by remaining inside the void between Gates for too long. I'm not sure what form of energy he was exposed to during this time (Gate energy?), but it surely wasn't coming directly from any nodes; and Skan was Master level at best (which is part of the reason why he couldn't make his own Gate to escape, but had to try an unreliable one...). (Side note: Gate energy is also different from raw magical energy. Gate energy seems to possess some sort of rudimentary volition -- it "seeks" things all by itself unless directed toward a specific target by the Adept who created it. Evidence: Ancar's botched Gate spell in one of the Winds books [the third, I think] -- when he failed to direct the energy properly toward a destination, it started reaching for him; when he wished for an Adept to help him, it reached for Falconsbane who was at that time trapped in the void.) > To NIghtveil: I've been hunting Misty books down for a year and I've > never seen ANY hardback! Or it could mean "deep water", but that would really drag >out the pronounciation (Jim cueei) gee, how do we pronounce that? > Hi all: I'm new to the list (on all of 3 days) but I can help with this one. Kimchee is a type of pickled cabbage thatI believe is native to Korea, although many nations have variations. It is made similarly to saurkraut (sp?). You put cut cabbage in a big crock, add a boiling hot vinegar/salt/spice brine mixture, weight it down (to keep the cabbage submerged) and let it age in a cool place. The Koreans often bury it in the ground to keep it cool, and to control it's smell. Just like homemade Kraut, this stuff purely does stink while it is pickling! PEEEEWWWWWW!!!! However, the end product isn't so bad. :) Kimchee is one of those things you either like or not, there is no half measures. Most of it is rather spicy (read hot) though, so be warned. Try some at your local Korean restaurant, and let me know what you think. Also, some grocery stores, and oriental food markets carry a mass produced version. After the Korean War the phrase "in deep kimchee" came home with the soldiers. Referring to its odiferous nature while pickling, and the sulphurous, almost excremental nature of the odor. I think if you sustitute "in deep s***" you will get the reference . Hope this helped. I just can't remember and it's really been bugging me and I would greatly appreciate it if someone would tell me. The text is quite inaccurate, or else I have completely misunderstood most of the book. For all you listsibs out there with other copies, this is what it says: -Assume the person reading this has never heard of Valdemar- "Though Vanyel has been born with near-legendary abilities to work both Herald and Mage magic , he wants no part of such things . Nor does he seek a warrior's path, wishing instead to become a Bard . Yet such talent as his if left untrained may prove a menace not only to Vanyel but to others as well . So he is sent to be fostered with his aunt, Savil , one of the famed Herald-Mages of Valdemar. -How does one explain that the reason he's got talent is because his channels were torn open by a backlash of gate energies and the death of his lifebonded? Or that he's been sent away because he's not the man his father wants him to be?- But strong-willed and self-centered , Vanyel is a challenge which even Savil can not master alone. For soon he will becomne the focus of frightening forces, lending his raw magic to a spell that unleashes terrifying wyr-hunters on the land. And by the time Savil seeks the assistance of a Shin'a'in Adept , Vanyel's wild talent may have already grown beyond anyone's ability to contain , placing Vanyel, Savil, and Valdemar itself in desperate peril ." - He was stubborn etc when he first arrived in Haven. As for the Shin'a'in deal, I can't explain that, must have been a mistake. It sounds better to say that all of Valdemar is at risk, for shock value and because no one reading the back will have heard of Haven.- Hope this helped slightly, ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- Darkflower ---<--+AT+- Talyedras Mage, Gryphon Companion and Historian ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Aug 1997 16:37:55 PDT From: "Dark Flower" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: West of Valdemar Message-ID: <199708022337.QAA29966-+AT+-f31.hotmail.com> >I was also wondering if there is anything to the west of Valdimar. I >know the lake (that Keren and Sherril are from) is on that side but >is there anything else? The lake is Evendim and if you've read the Gryphon Series, you'd know that the lake was created when Ma'ar's stronghold was destroyed and made a crater. The same thing happened to Urtho's and made the Dhorisha plains. Nother story though. Civilisation used to be in the west (now that was said somewhere but I don't remember) but after the mage storms everyone fled eastward. There's probably some continent farther west where the storms didn't reach but none of that has been spoken of. ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- Darkflower ---<--+AT+- Talyedras Mage, Gryphon Companion and Historian ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ---<--+AT+- ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 20:07:07 -0400 From: Crystal Hewitt To: "'mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk'" Subject: RE: ke'chara Message-ID: <01BC9F8B.CEC4B640-+AT+-TPhantom02> Written on the bathroom walls were these words: What does Ka'chara mean? Polka dotted sheep with purple feet to all, Becca If my memory serves me correctly it means beloved. AHH, here it is in the Black Gryphon hb pg 187 " Kechara which meant "beloved" or "darling" in Keled'a'in." Hope that helps.
