I wonder what "mar" is? I can't > think of anything off-hand that would match up. I might ask my > Scandinavian linguistics colleagues and find out. I went to library yesterday and did some reading on the name Valdemar. It appears that 'vald' has nothing to do with the German word 'wald' meaning forest, but rather means something like power, force, reign, rule or some such, as in the Old English title of the Anglo-Saxon High Kings, 'bredwalda', meaning 'widely acclaimed' or 'widely ruling' or something like that. The name Valdemar itself is a Danish for of Russian Vladimir. The mother of the Danish king Valdemar I the Great was a princess of Novgorod or Kiev or some other slavic principality, who named her son after her own father, Vladimir. The name, of course, had to be modified into a Danish form, thus becoming Valdemar. The ending -mar is just another form of the Russian word 'mir', meaning peace. Thus the name Valdemar consists of two words, one meaning power/force/ rule/reign/authority/might/domination/dominion/influence/sway/control/grip, and one meaning peace. Would that then yield any sensible meaning for the name? One could speculate that it might mean something like 'The One That Rules in Peace' or 'The One That Forces into Peace' or maybe 'Power of Peace' or 'Reign of Peace'. All of the several meanings I can think of are quite likely incorrect or downright wrong, since translating old names is not merely putting the meanings of the components together (or so I've been told). Any linguists on the list who would have any idea about what is the real meaning of the name? Petrie, who should be working and not writing utterly meaningless messages like this one. :) -- ****************************************************************** * Petri O Peltonen * Animals, * * Helsinki School of Economics * who are not penguins, * * Administration Office * can only wish they were. * * ppeltone-+AT+-hkkk.fi * - Chicago Reader 10/15/82 - * ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 1997 09:06:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Vanyel401-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Tylendel's repudiation Message-ID: <970805090635_1483484716-+AT+-emout08.mail.aol.com> On Mon, 4 Aug 1997 Ashali9928-+AT+-aol.com wrote: > I also think, that as Savil said, everyone made mistakes. Ok people I have been watching this braid and thought of something according to the timeline the LHM trilogy ended in 798A.D and the AOTQ was in the year 1376AD which would but the said event of the Companion reputing the Herald at or around the year of 1176AD(The said 200 years ago from AOFTQ). Now is there something I'm missing or is everyone jumping to conclusions??? Because according to the timeline they could not be talking about Lendel...or should we all just chalk this up as YAMI? It talks about Gala's mistakes what where they- not watching so that she could hold him together when his twin died.? It is very possible (pure speculation here) that there just wasn't many people left to recognize them as Sun-priests. I've always thought that Hardorn was similar to Valdemar, in the sense that before Ancar, it allowed people to practice what religious beliefs that they desired. Of course I understand that the primary religion is the Earth based one but that does not mean that there were not any other religions being practiced (speculation continues:-) prior to Ancar reign. **************************************************************************** Lady Dawna wrote: >Now I have a new question--Do we ever learn Hulda's real name. I had always thought that Hulda was her real name. However as I flip through the pages of Storm Warning it states; "The agent in question had been a sorceress by the name of Hulda--Charliss never could recall the rest of her name"(pg18). I suppose this could be taken two ways. Either he could not remember her whole name or Hulda never really was her real name. Since most of the people in the Empire went by their first names I am inclinded to think Hulda was not her real name. The only time a last name was mentioned was to attach where the person came from (for example when Tremane of Lynnai was banished from the Empire). Also Charliss referred to her as "that Hulda creature" (pg19 SW) as if he really did not know much about her. Now I tend to believe that no one ever really knew Hulda's real name. **************************************************************************** Tylendel's repudiation Cennydd wrote: > I get the feeling that the Companions are not particularly > "understanding" about evil. I do not see why Companions can't fall by the wayside. They are reincarnated Heralds. Granted they have a lot more experience but they are human in their feeling and memories nonetheless. Savil stated that no one is infallible and that even Gala made mistakes (pg231 MPawn). IMO Gala could have convinced Tylendel to call off the Wyrsa had she made any attempt to do so. The time she wasted riping her support away from Tylendel may have been enough time for him to come to his senses. I realize there wasn't much time but I believe she had other options and just choose not to take them. What she did felt more like punishment. The time for punishment was not at that moment. When she suicided she had to know she was going to ultimately take him with her. IMO she made Tylendel loose what little sanity he had left. IMHO I sincerely believe that Tylendel was insane with grief and not, by defintion of the word, evil (morally wrong or bad). The acts he committed were evil but Tylendel by himself as a whole person was not evil. *snip* > Part of my reason for thinking this is the wording that Gala used: "I do > not know you. Therefore he was unable to understand, choose or control what he was doing. Just my thoughts:-)) Hopefully this makes some sort of sense. Just finished Firebird. I liked it really well, but I have to admit, I liked the Fire Rose even more! But Firebird was very good. Have you ever had the experience of reading right before you go to sleep, so you spend the night dreaming wierd dreams about the book? WEll, I was reading firebird late one night and dreamed about Czars all night long. Yuk. The book def was better than my dreams. I especially liked the part where he masqueraded as a demon guard in the castle. How clever! I must say, I could never be that brave. And how perfect that Pietor was caught and turned into a statue. That was great! The only sore spot was a gripe we all seem to have. The cover description kept talking about the character getting kicked out because he tried to capture the firebird. So for most of the book, I kept waiting for him to go back home so he could tell the family about the firebird, try to catch it, and then get kicked out. It drove me nuts! I finally figured that, once again, the cover description was grossly wrong. I swear, I never noticed inaccuracies in book descriptions before Misty's stuff. ANd it's not like I noticed it after someone wrote about inaccuracies. I noticed it several weeks ago when I was reading one of the Valdemar trilogies (I'm a newbie, still). I'd read the cover, then the book, and then reread the cover. Again and again I kept feeling like the cover description did not accurately describe the book. I think Misty should have a new policy of writing the description herself. But anyway, overall, I greatly enjoyed Firebird. Also recently finished The Mage Storms trilogy. OF course, I liked it. All I have left now is the Gryphon trilogy, Oathbreakers, Sword of Ice, and the new one, Owlflight. I"m almost caught up to you guys!!! I think my favs are AofQ and The Fire Rose.
