We all keep saying (well, several of you/us, anyways) that Gala shouldn't have repudiated 'Lendel, that it wasn't that bad, really, and why wasn't -Van- repudiated? Okay, number one, -none-, I repeat, -NONE- of the story could have happened if either parts had fallen out differently. Anyways, that's not really important. My thought here is that...for one, Gala isn't Groveborn. And even the Groveborn are far from infallible . Gala -was- a person once, or so we can assume, maybe, from Van's impressions that she was a young woman (in the pine grove, I think?) inside the horse form... Maybe it was a personal decision on her part, that she could no longer continue to share herself with someone who lashed out so completely, like 'Lendel did, someone who even blocked -her- out. There's no saying that it was the -correct- decision, all things considered impartially, from a distance, but it was a personal thing, and I bet if we could see her thoughts as that happened, she must have been in complete turmoil. Imagine, losing the one you thought was your soulmate. Sure, we -see- that, but in 'Lendel's reaction. How do the Companions feel about these things? Think how Gala must have felt, to be 'forced' to give up on her Chosen like that. Given the way she seemed to have been thinking, it must have seemed that she had mad a colossal mistake. Why else, besides the immediate need to aid the attacked people, would she pit herself in a very uneven battle against the wyrsa? I can almost imagine how it feels...and that scares me. I think perhaps that classifying the repudiation as 'right' or 'wrong' is an injustice to the very bond the Herald shares with his/her Companion. It is something -so- complete, so final, that black and white labels like good and bad just don't apply. Maybe 'Lendel was good, when he was Chosen. And maybe he went crazy, making himself ineligible to be a Herald, while he was alive. Myself, I think the Death Bell rang for him because he made the choice to right his wrongs, in a second life if not in his own, making a true, just decision, as a Herald must. The Bell isn't rung by mortal means (if I recall rightly , there wasn't even a clapper inside? true or no? anyone?), I don't think, so it must have been a Higher Power who made that decision. Wow, I sure got longwinded there... I hope it makes -some- sense. Care package sheep to all those who are lucky like me and heading off to college soon! Anyhow, gotta get up -early- tomorrow (5:30am!), and it's now 11pm, so I'm going to bed. What can you do after that? I'd > love to find out more about different Heralds and their adventures and > stuff, but as for the main situation for the whole of Valdemar, what do > you all think is going to happen? First off I found Storm Breaking very anti-Climatic. Everyone was preparing for the big storm that never came. From here on we've got lot's of things that can happen. For the first time every (I believe) we have quite a few contries at peace with each other. Berfore Storm Breaking almost all the civilizations were isolationist Xenophobes. A very unique view for every country to have. Now, you'll see politics changing. Also, I imagine the Eastern Empire will now play a bigger role in their lives. Yes, the Eastern Empire suffered termenous loses and will have to reunite itself, but It does blame Valdemar for the storms and more importantly It knows where Valdemar is. Before, Valdemar was a faceless myth, not anymore. Also, there is going to be more dangerous creatures that were changed by the storms preying on the outskirt towns and civilizations. There is also the possibility of Mercedes introducing a new civilization and or threat to further complicate the clean up after the Storms. There is a review of Owl something, the next book. It does mention an invading force, but we don't know who they are. I got the impression they came north, but it has been a while since I read that so I may be wrong. All in all, there are many possibilities (trust me, it's a hobby). -- On the way back they sang a number of tuneful and reflective songs on the subject of peace, morality, culture, sports, family life, and the obliteration of all other life forms. ................................ And so with that said and done, I now take you back to a reality you don't truely understand. ................................ Do Companions stay the same sex as they were as Heralds. Hmm -- good questions! I'd *guess* the following: Since dead Heralds seem to get a choice about whether to return as humans or Companions, perhaps they also get a choice about sex. Most likely, the majority of them choose to retain their sex, perhaps to make the transition to a Companion easier. (They'd be facing a major shape change, so contending with a sex shift at the same time may be asking a bit much.) AFAIK, all Misty's examples so far have kept their sex, so it's also possible that there's no such choice to be made (it may be automatic). In Oathbound/Oathbreakers (can't remember which), we get to see a male soul placed into a female body (but not by reincarnation). The resulting being is confused and angry, but s/he does not seem to become insane as a result, so in Misty's universe it would seem that it's *possible* for a soul to get a body of the opposite sex and live a normal life. As for lifebonds: there's only one example of a lifebond and reincarnation being mixed: Tylendel/Stefen and Vanyel. In this case, the lifebond remained intact in the living partner (Vanyel), and the reborn partner picked it up where his previous life left off. Thus, I'd *guess* the following: a lifebond survives as long as at least one of the partners is alive; if a dead partner is reincarnated, the lifebond is retained, and "destiny" will probably bring them back together if it's at all possible. I don't know if a lifebonded Herald who is reincarnated as a Companion will still be lifebonded to his/her still-living human partner. I'd guess that this situation is avoided by either (a) the premature death of the remaining lifebonded partner, or (b) the delayed reincarnation of the dead Herald. > To everyone on the list before I left, I walked a mile today.
