Message-ID: <01BCAB6B.EB31EFA0-+AT+-crystalh.phantomreality.com> Heyla Janice, People kinda come & go on the list, most of us just lurk here and come out of hiding only occasionally. I hope you enjoy the list, I have for the most part, but recently there has been more flaming than I care to deal with. Frankly if I want to deal with all that I'll stay in the "real world". Anyway a word to the warning, if you haven't read Aunt Mel's list etiquette or the newbie list (I believe both are on the website) you may wish to, otherwise you may find yourself at the receiving end of some flames. Most on the list are pretty good about taking it easy when people make honest-to-goodness mistakes, but there are a few who really sour the cream. There seems to have been a major misunderstanding here. Someone wrote a rather rude message to the list asking to be unsubbed. Someone else (Kethry) replied to that message in order to send a message to the list simply wondering why the list was so quiet I think. And then yet another person seems to have interpreted that Kethry was the one wanting to be unsubbed and asked her to be polite while she was on the list. So, I just thought I'd say that: a. I have emailed Mel privately to point out that a subscriber is desperately wanting to be removed. b. Kethry, noone is really mad at you. Please don't feel bad. Yet, here I seem lucky to get 4. However, being on the Palladium list for 3 years now, I know that if you want something to happen (like people talking) you need to start topics or threads and get people talking. Now for the topical part of this. What are people's opinion of Misty's writing with other people? For instance the Mage Wars where written by both Misty and Larry Dixon. Now, I have not read them, yet. However, in other authors colaboration pieces, I have noticed where one author wrote vs. the other. To me this distracts from the book. I bring this up becous Owlflight, according to B. Dalton bookstore, is a colaboration >piece. It really depends on the stories/books themselves. In _Tiger Burning Bright_, it was pretty obvious which of the three authors wrote about which character (the behavior and attitude of the princess bears a striking resemblance to that of Elspeth). While the shifts in perspective and/or style may be disconcerting to some, I found that in this case, it was fitting because the story revolved around three distinct charaters. As for the Mage Wars, I didn't really notice any serious shifts or gaps which indicated where Misty may have left off and Larry started us again. _Black Gryphon_ is actually one of my favorite Misty books. All 3 books in the series are a good read, even though IMO the plots in _White Gryphon_ and _Silver Gryphon_ seem to lack a little something. I'd love to talk about Diana Trigarde. Unlike most of the people on this list-this is assumsion please forgive me if I'm wrong- I didn't even know that misty wrote anything other than the Trigarde series. You can imagine my surprise when a good friend took me over to the fantasy section of the bookstore and pointed them out to me. I was drawn to Trigarde for many reasons. I think the biggest was that she was writer, a witch, and a paranormal investigator. In 'Burning Water' I liked the way she appoligised to Mark for using him as a psychic medium without telling him. She explains that its not right but that she was young when she was doing it. In 'Children of the Night', I was impressed with the Gypsy vampire that she fell in love with. He seemed more 'human' then most mundanes I know. Reading 'Jinx High' took the longest. Its was a great story but I sometimes got the feeling that there were lessons to be learned from the writing. If anyone else has read this book you probably know what I'm talking about. Knowing that Misty will never write anymore books in this line, and agreeing with why she won't, it doesn't stop me from wishing. I'm a devoted Tarma/Kethry fan-the first fantasy books I read- Diana Trigarde will always be my first love of Misty writiting. I was reading the Winds trilogy and When i finished I was hoping that the Storm series would be about Elspeth and Darkwind. I was disapointed that they weren't at first, then I fell in love with those characters(haven't read SB yet so don't spoil it for me*G*). I feel by far she is one of the greatest female warriors!!! And yet another duo I wished to see more of was Tarma & Kethry!! I want to see more stories about them(I know S&S books have them) but wouldn't it be cool that those stories were all in one book? I agree, but it seems that the books Misty writes are more plot motivated then people. She writes about a place and what happens to that place over the period of time. The people seem to serve that purpose. Yes, a compliation of the short stories should be made. Is there a refence on the net that has a list of all the stories that haver appeared in S&S? I think that After you have gone through the book that apends a good deal of time on the one charector you have gone over the most important senerio in their life and though their is still enough going on to include them in other books there may not be enough to write another book or series on them. just my honest opinon. ********************************************************************** I just want to greet Kethry to the list and apolgize for the letter accusing her of writing that Bastards! thing. Or does it show? :> Gryphons have often recived less than respect at the hands of authors. There was a book I saw once called The Crystal Gryphon... and I swear, they look like Wyrsa with bird wings. I recently read Wind of Fate... and I agree with the review I saw. It seems pretty lame compared to the Gryphon books. I couldn't belive that Elspeth was willing to go to war with the chance of being killed for her country, but she didn't want to stay on the Companions' preplanned path. Something there doesn't add up. I also though the treatment of Dawnfire's predicament seemed like a deus ex machina.. It would've been cooler IMHO if they could come up with a spell that would allow her to stay in the hawk's body. There's one thing I'm confused about. Is zhai'helleva a 'hello' or 'goodbye'? Its in the first chapter of Oathbreakers, within the first page or two. In the SFBC hardback 'Vows and Honor' its page 241, 6th line. Just after Kethry talks about Need healing the scout that got gut shot. I like quote so well that I printed a pretty copy and hung it in my office. Even my boss started quoting it without knowing where it came from. As far as collaborations in general go, they can be really good, or really bad, it's all a matter of who the authors are, and how well their writing style meshes together. One Fantastic collaboration I can think of off hand is Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's "Good Omens". Also, I believe someone asked about Di Tregard books.....so far as I know, they're an acceptable topic!?! In fact, those are the first Misty books I ever read. I liked Jinx High, but have to say I preferred the other one (help me with the title, I can't remember it - it's been too long) with the gypsy boy and the vampire.... carmel covered sheep for you, Little Crow ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 18:53:00 PDT From: "Little Crow" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Mage Wars Message-ID: <19970819015301.4500.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> > I recently read Wind of Fate... and I agree with the review I saw. "Glorious Destinies lead to Glorious Funerals". That's why elspeth didn't want to follow the chosen path of the Companions. She still has a chance of dying in war but at least she can do it her way. She's fighting for her freedom. She'd rather risk dying than to be Ancar's slave, and when you think about it, predestination is a form of slavery. She wouldn't be living her own life, she'd be living a life laid out for her by someone else. > I also though the treatment of Dawnfire's predicament seemed like a >deus ex machina.. Heyla! I thought the Winds Series was a very good series. Did you not read Talia's series where Elspeth was the screwed up brat? I think Elspeth did rather good for herself. And even after she renounced the crown, she would give her life for her country, I think she was really good. And if it where up to you, would you want to stay on a preplanned path? Let me explain... > I was reading the Winds trilogy and When i finished I was hoping > that the Storm series would be about Elspeth and Darkwind. Each trilogy (or duology) is about a certain character or set of characters. Those characters are the protagonists only for that set of books, and then Misty moves on to someone else. Gryphon = Skandranon & Amberdrake (and their children) Magic's = Vanyel & his lifebonbded Arrows = Talia Oath = Tarma & Kethry Sword = Kerowyn & Need Winds = Elspeth & Darkwind Storms = Karal, An'desha, et al. The Storms and Winds books really don't fit the pattern of character-based writing that her earlier books started. In those series, she focuses more on events than personalities (though with Storms I think she did a good job of both characterization and plotting). Remmington Crothian wrote: > I agree, but it seems that the books Misty writes are more plot motivated then > people. > She writes about a place and what happens to that place over the period of > time. The > people seem to serve that purpose. (Psst! Try to stick to under 80 columns. ;-) That's not true with most of her earlier books (especially the Arrows books). In those, the whole purpose of the writing seems to be the development of Talia's character; the plots almost seem to be thrown in afterward. Well, perhaps that's unfair -- AotQ is an "episodic" work, but AFall has more of a single plot/theme. It varies from book to book, but I think that overall Misty has placed more emphasis on plotting and less on characterization in her newer writing. Maybe I missed something when I read Black Gryphon, but I got the impression that Urtho had been breeding the gryphon race for considerably more than one generation by the time of Black Gryphon.
