I think that this idea has some merit, but I also think that it is about time to just start the thread over from scratch. Perhaps, we could make our suggestions and discuss them and then, after all's said and sifted, we could look at the previous list and see what commonalities and differences exist. With as many new members as we have, I feel like it would be worthwhile to just let this run without worrying about the fact that the thread has been done before. Piers Anthony's Xanth series is an obvious choice.... > I did think of Dragonriders of Pern, but as I > recall, there is some mention of sex in those books and tha parents > would lynch me for corrupting their little darlings. ... well, in that case, maybe Xanth isn't the best choice. :-( There's nothing explicit in it, but there's a lot of wink-wink, nudge-nudge sort of innuendo. On the other hand, there are about 20 of them, so if you do get one of the kids to start them, (s)he'll probably be busy for a while. Heinlein wrote many juvenile sci-fi novels -- they're as clean-cut as you're going to get (no sex, very little violence). It's practically Boy Scout stuff; no parent could ever object! ;-) They're not as good as his adult novels, IMHO, but they're good. Asimov's older Robots books would probably work well. How many preadolescent boys don't like robots?!? Norton's older Witch World books are nice and short, without any real sexual/violent content. I haven't read the newer Witch World books, though. Most sci-fi and fantasy is aimed at a precocious 13-year-old or older (often adult), so choices are rather limited if your target audience is a 10-year-old with disinclination toward reading in the first place. Donaldson and Moorcock, while excellent, are NOT suitable for young readers. Hope this helps. ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Aug 1997 15:45:10 -0700 From: Quickstar To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Misty movies? For some reason, I see Antonio Banderas whenever I think of Hadanelith, or any other evil mages. My mind works in mysterious ways. :) Also, another problem...what if Misty doesn't WANT a movie? I mean, it would be strange if Valdemar became "mainstream", so to speak. And who would direct it? I think only Misty can do it justice. But I think Warner Bros. might fund it. No matter what, the plot will be cut up and rearranged....that always happens with books translated to the screen. A classic example is Jurassic Park. I don't think Misty would be willing to have a director mutilate the story. IMHO, the problem with having a webpage dedicated to a series of books is there's not a lot you can do with it. Since the books are copywrighted (of course) would you be able to have a quote section, peoples favorite quotes from the different books? How about summaries and opinions? Please keep those seperate. A who's who of Valdemar, a discribtion of the different places, or even a time line of events would work if it doesn't violate copyrights. Those are some ideas, but not being familier with the copyright laws I don't know what's allowed and what's not allowed. -- On the way back they sang a number of tuneful and reflective songs on the subject of peace, morality, culture, sports, family life, and the obliteration of all other life forms. ................................ I have quite a few Velgarth characters cast, but on the Kethry/Tarma issue I think that Mellissa Joan Hart could be a pretty good Kethry in a few years and, come on, don't tell me no one's thought of Lucy Lawless for the part of Tarma. Talk about type-casting! Anyhow, that's my two cents for now. Now I agree with silverfox on Melissa Joan Hart as Kethry in a couple of years but Lucy Lawless couldn't play Tarma for the single reason that she is definatley not sexless nor could she ever try to be even though she could play the part other than that. Sorry for the short post, but I really want to know, so I can maybe say "Oooh, THAT'S who it is" and picture her as Tarma. Thanx in advance!
