I am currently reading James White's two latest Sector General novels, in which he does repeat all of his explanations--all you ever wanted to know about Kelgians, Tralthans, etc. How do you arrive at a happy medium between Misty's lack of explanations of what has happened in previous books and White's exhaustive explanations? Wouldn't it be great if we could get Karen Fonstad to do an Atlas of Velgarth? For those who don't know, she is a cartographer who does fantasy atlases. She is (or was) associated with the Department of Cartography at U.Wisconsin-Oshkosh (I think her husband is still a professor there, but I don't think she teaches any more) and is truly brilliant. If you are interested in seeing her work, check out the Atlas of Middle-Earth (Tolkien's worlds), The Atlas of the Land (Donaldson's stuff), the Atlas of Pern (McCaffrey's Dragonriders), or the Atlas of the Dragonlance World (the Weiss & Hickman series). All her atlases are incredibly well researched and exhaustively detailed. BTW, I got the impression that there were a few cities in the area of the Dhorisha Plains before Urtho's Tower went kablooie. Not a lot of them, but some. I'll have to check out the BG and see if there is any evidence one way or the other. The books currently in Spoilers are: Storm Breaking The Firebird Owlflight Any other book you'd like to talk about... feel free :) ***** Well, some people say you should read Misty's Velgarth books in the order published... but I say that depends on the person who's reading. I actually started with the Winds books, which did confuse me a bit, because I didn't understand what had happened to Talia, or her relationship with Elspeth, but then I started with the LHM's and worked my way back up to the Winds. Really, if it's a younger person, it's perfectly fine starting from Arrows, but if you're planning on coming out to the person, it might be better to start them on LHM and then go through publishing order... seeing as that's pretty much how a friend of mine came out to me :) Samantha said: >-Winds of Fate >-Winds of Change >-Winds of Fury >-Storm Warning >-Storm Rising >-Storm Breaking Uhhh, Sam(mind if I call you Sam?)? Y'know, you're missing a trilogy here... namely the Mage Wars which should, imnsho be read between Winds and Storms, because Winds tantalizes you with tidbits of info about the Mage Wars, and Storms draws upon knowledge gained from reading the Mage Wars, or at least BG. In case anyone out there isn't quite sure, this trilogy goes: -Black Gryphon -White Gryphon -Silver Gryphon ***** Moiami (is that your name? Hmmm... re: ordering... there are a few ways to get books online. I don't know too much about them 'cause I'm still in the process of getting a card, so don't order things online yet, but the one whose name I hear bandied about a lot is Amazon.com... I think their url is www.amazon.com - if not, do a search for Amazon books, and you'll find it. With Amazon, you can do things like ask them to send you a book as soon as it comes out (giving them your card info, of course), and I *thinkthinkthink* (don't quote me on this) they do some searching for books out of print. I'm pretty sure there are other services online, especially in places like AOL (which I'm thankfully not a member of :) and CompuServe. Re: whether other Misty books are as good as LHM... well, I must say that imho, the LHM trilogy is not only the best piece of writing I've seen from Mercedes Lackey, but it's also one of my alltime favorite trilogies/books. You might find the AofQ trilogy to be a bit mind-candyish. I felt her Knights of Ghosts and Shadows and Summoned to Tourney duology to be up there, as well (maybe because they're not set in Velgarth?)... and I also really loved Bardic Voices: the Lark and the Wren. Oh, and Fire Rose is also definitely one of her better efforts... some people like FR even better than the LHM.... But seriously, Misty has written over 30 (or is it now 40) books, and you can't expect *all* of them to be at the same level. *sigh* well, that's all I have time for between crashes today *wan grin* love, Deniz Sarikaya, High Priestess of | When it is May, Procrastination, Counselor of MIST, | If May return -- Holy Custodian of the B-Day List, Dame | Has nobody a pang of the OoAM, Bower Champion, Demon of | Lest on a face so beautiful Deceitful Aliases, Lady of the Seas, | He might not look again? Id like to take this a step farther, if you will. My issue, which may come from a black and white perception of the world is, how could Van have had a *visitation* (for lack of a better word) from Lendel's spirit to give permission for the relatioship with Stef, if Stef is the reincarnate. I can accept the reincarnate. . . but this suggests a PARTIAL reincarnate if Lendel's spirit is still running around. Anyone have any help for me? Did you know that the leysha'e Kal'endral who visited Elspeth and Karal was Tarma? First of all, the leshya said "Student of my student, pupil of my pupil" to Elspet on page 446 in WoChange. Well, Elspeth is a pupil of Kero, and Kero was a pupil of Tarma. In Karal's case, the leshya said "I see a kinswoman of mine has left her mark on you" because Karal had weapons around him in a circle like Kero had taught him, and Kero is kin of Tarma. Also, here's an interesting bit to munch: the official name of the Eastern Empire is the Aurinalean empire. I figured this out from page 297 in WoFate: K'Treva is (or used to be) the Clan of Falcons, K'Vala is the Clan of Owls, and K'Sheyna is the Clan of Ravens. The other Clans, Deer, Hawk, Grasscat, and Wolf became the Shin'a'in. There were two other Clans, Eagle and Fox where it did not specify what side they went to, Tayledras or Shin'a'in. Perhaps they became the barbarians that live up north. Also, in SBreaking, I think it is (I will specify the page later maybe) Karal is with the hertasi and kyree. The hertasi secratary said "Thank you gesten."to Karal. I think the hertasi said this because Gesten got sort of known as a famous hertasi, and his name became synonymous as a good helper, just like in Karse, "Albreich" became a word for traitor. Thanks for listening.
