I wanted to throw in my $0.02's worth on the subject. As far as not going after Vanyel's family (from the defeat as Leareth), I don't think he really cared. Remember, his lasting obsession with the gryphons has several things the Vanyel-time conflict lacked: 1) Ma'ar was really ready to rule the whole world when Skan blew him to pieces; 2) SKAN blew him to pieces - a construct with the gall to believe itself equal with humans; and Ma'ar's (weird multiple apostrophes) intellect and persona were whole. In Van's time, Leareth only had a small holding up north, and was sending his army down for his first major attack. Vanyel didn't hold the same importance as Skan. I have a few questions of my own: 1) In the Winds, Falconsbane was so excited over the gryphon's lair because it was an actual permanent gate, and only Urtho had the secret of making them. Was that an actual fact? I was wondering if the Empire could do it (since the envoy made a gate without a physical frame before Elspeth got him)? 2) N'yara and Ande'sha's transformation by the Star-eyed - Why did she leave them with talons and slitted eyes? If N'yara was Falconsbanes daughter (to continue his bloodline), and Ande'sha was not already part cat before Falconsbane got him, why couldn't those things be transformed back? They were not pre-existing, Faconsbane did them himself. Anything he did, I would assume a Goddess (or her chosen avatars) could change back. Any thoughts? Why no Grand Plots for revenge on : Vanyel's "family"? As a listsib already said, None of the Public knew that Van had descendants. Only Brightstar, his foster-parents, Featherfire, Jisa, Shavri and maybe Randale knew. 'Sides, Van didn't do anything seriously thwarting Ma'ar(or Leareth, whichever you prefer!). After all, what was one death? Ma'ar could just wait for the next descendant to come along. When Ma'ar was thwarted as Falconsbane, he would naturally get damned obsessed since FB wasn't very sane. He was _bound_ to have irrational behaviour. When Ma'ar was thwarted as Ma'ar, he would be able to remember events even clearer. Skan had been the arrogant SOB that, in a single blow, blow his empire to kablooie. I mean, won't you get fixated? Well, mebbe FB could have traced Elspeth's lineage (it prob was possible magically), but he didn't... Now for a wierd thing: ANY FANS OF BOYZONE? They >were not pre-existing, Faconsbane did them himself. My guess that these two were left with FB's "mark" because the Star-Eyed wanted them to do some changing and adaptation on their own. Granted, Nyara lost some of his taint with Need's magical help and survival guidance. Likewise, Need and the Avatars helped An'desha prowl around FB's subconscious. It was still up to Nyara to gain her own self-confidence and self-esteem, while An'desha had to face up to Ma'ar's memories to help the Alliance. Neither of these occurrences could be forced by the goddess. The Star-Eyed's tendency to let mortlas work through through their own problems before she intervened has been mentioned several times in Misty's works. For example, in Oathbreakers, Tarma is in the woods near Roald's cottage when she calls on her instructors for help. When the goddess appears instead, she mentions that Tarma seldom asked for "help" from her, and that was how it should be. I think that it all depends on how you like to start a series. For me, i started with LHM. I Totally agree with jeannie. It is about the only book that makes me cry, and makes me really suffer. It is my favorite, but perhaps because it is the one i read first, and that got me hooked. For me it is the one to start with. It introduces the concept of herald and companions well, as Vanyel learns about them, and it is so moving. Then i would recomend reading AoQ. It restates the ending to LHM, and would be a real spoiler if you havent read LHM. Most people take for granted that everyone knows Van will die... Well, living proof here that it is not always so. Then i would follow with the Mage winds, then the Gryphon Books, and last the Storm books. I don't have the Oathbound books here because i haven't read them yet. Anyone who wants to be a Herald & have a Companion has to join Queen's Own, & then send for persona sheet. LHM made me cry too. It's one of the few things that does. Thanx, Ambersong > > ______________________________________________________ > Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com Hi: I started with "By the Sword" and then read the Arrows series. However, when someone I know wants to start reading Mercedes Lackey, I would suggest starting with The Mage Wars and follow the order that they are listed as Ambersong has said. Whenever, I re-read my books, I start with The Mage Wars and go from there. I don't know if By the Sword is still in print, because I already have a copy. My mother works in a book store ( large one) and they have all of the titles. I enjoyed it, but it isn't very high on my list. Keep in mind that -any- Misty work is like Saturn high compared to any other author's! On the age thing (again *G*) I am 33 and have been reading Misty since late 80's early 90's? By '91 for sure 'cause that was when I met her and Larry (at a con here in Washington, the one where we presented her with 'Need').
