A newbie here (I've been lurking for four months, all scattered about the
last year), with a question that's probably so startilingly obvious, it's
staring me in the face...

When 'fandes talks to Stef, she says that Companions may talk to whomever
they choose to; even someone without the gift -- ie, Stef.  But when AotQ
rolls around, Rolan can't talk to his Chosen - Talia - even with the dire
circumstances in AF, because *she* doesn't have a mindspeech gift.  Am I
missing something here? 

And now for some pointless comments --

Suprisingly, yes.  Though I squeak some words by in normal conversation;
mostly Shin'a'in I've memorized from the back of the book <g>, I do find
that I'll trip over names when I try to say them aloud.  When talking to my
best friend, who's also a Valdemar-fan -- after we decided whether it was
vanYEL or VANyel -- trying to get the words out was terribly hard..<g> 

Re: Order of the books.. 

Personally, I think Arrows is the best introduction.  I started with LHM,
and I had to assume what a Herald was, and by the end of the books I was
sure Queen/King's Own meant they were sleeping with the monarch <g> (You
can be sure that assumption changed when reading Arrows ;)  While there's a
few minor spoilers, no one who hasn't read LHM will understand them, and no
one remembers that much from one reading... LHM definately comes next;
it's, in my mind, the best trilogy, amazing to read even before you know
what a Herald is, and so much better after you do.  The Vows and Honour
trilogy, next; since Kero and Need play parts in the next books. (And
because they're great <g>) Then in sequential order, Winds and Storms...
and Gryphons whenever you feel like reading something borin..er.. whenever
you have time to read it <sweet smile> 

Re : Sad scenes 
I've cried at every book series except Gryphons and Vows and Honour (great
books, but no reason to cry, really) LHM -- that's obvious; I cried through
the last 60 or so pages of Magic's Price.  Arrows; I cried through the last
book... Kris dying and Talia's capture had me in knots.  And Talia and
Dirk's plain denseness.. (Hit 'em over the head and drag them back to the
cave to talk, I say.) Storms -- The last two chapters. Between Florian,
Van, Stef, 'fandes, and the rest of the avatars, I was very unhappy...
Winds I haven't read yet 'cause the bookstore is taking a biiiit long with
the ordering. <terse look> 
	(I'm sensative <g> It's just a book, it's just a book...VAAAAAAAN <cries>

You know there same sort of situation happend in LHM Promise, with that
"fat-head" Lores as he was beating on his companion (fallon I think).  Surely
that would have been a moment that a companion would have used their
mindspeach.

JUNO CANNOT SEND MAIL TO AOL. PERIOD. If you are at Juno, mail will never

I don't see why anybody whould have a problem.  This list generates very 
few messages, so belonging to both should not be a problem.  I myself 
have only read the Valdemar books, so any discussions about the other 
books I delete.  I'd like to hear more of your ideas on developing 
personas.  As a Gamer (a person who plays Role-Playing Games) I am very 
interestd, even excited, about the possibilities this presents.

OK, I haven't read SB yet, so forgive moi if I sound truly dense, or asking
something that has already been explained in the book. 
In BTS, (DAW, pg 392), Kero goes :"Iftel would be logical, but - dear gods,
they are _strange_ there. The Shin'a'in Warrior doesn't intervene half as
often as the Wind Lords." 
After reading that, one would logically assume that the Wind Lords were the
deities of the "Iftel-ians". But gathering from what you guys said [U know
guys, spoiler warnings only entice me further;)], Vkandis was the resident
god. Am I missing something here?

Hi!

Just wanted to say hello to everybody on the list.  I just subscribed
yesterday, and I'm definitely a newbie.  I've started reading Mercedes
Lackey only about two months ago, and immediately fell in love with her
books (especially the Valdemar series).

Inevitable question:  Did anyone here read "Owlflight"?  If yes, is it good?
I saw that it was available from a internet-order catalog, but is it out in

     Kethry, what I think we need is something like AOL has on their Misty
Bulletin Board area.  They have different folders for every thrilogy, and
various other topics.  
     I suggest having a series of  folders/boards for every new book.  There
would be a board for every 5 chapters of a book in spoilers.  For instance,
in the case of Owlflight, there would be a folder for Ch 1-5, a folder for CH
6-10, a folder for 11-15, and so on.  When you've read those chapters, you
could go into those folders/boards/rooms/whatever and discuss what has
happened so far.  No worry about spoilers up to that point. 
     I think this would help discussion a lot.  Plus, you can actually
discuss the works AS you read them, not long after.
     What does everyone think?

     My take on that was that Companions"can" talk to anyone, but the
question is "will they?"  The Companions are under a stricture (How much is
self-imposed is up for debate...) not to "help" beyond a certain point.  
     It's either that or Misty changed her mind...

     

     That's a lot this time.  I usually only reply to Misty related stuff
that hasn't been addressed, but this is kinda fun...

Well, I don't see why you should be flamed for suggesting something like
that. 
However, depending on what you mean by developing personas, you might be
getting in deep waters copyright wise. And we all know about Misty's
zealous lawyers. 
As far as I know, persona development if it implies Misty's world or
characters should only be done through Queen's Own. The same is true of
getting yourself a Companion.

Along the same lines, online RPing is a no-no unless specifically cleared
by Misty.

The Science Fiction Book Club has all the Valdemar books including
"By the Sword".  Note that some of the trilogies are in omnibus form.

Heyla listsibs.  Yes, I read it, it's very good.  As far as I know, there's 
only a few advanced copies available in the US, and it will be out officially 
on Oct. 1.  I really enjoyed it - it's more along the lines of Arrows than

I live in Washington State and got my copy from B Dalton on Saturday,
September 6, for $13 or $14.  They only received a few copies, all
reserved by people like me waiting patiently (Not!) for it to be
released.  More are expected throughout the month.  I understand
Waldenbooks in other parts of the state got copies the last week of
August.

When I inquired at B Dalton their database originally said it wasn't due
out until October 4.  I said I knew it was already out and available at
some Waldenbooks stores which got them to search a little harder.  2
days later I had my book.  I too wish swift copies to those who wish
them.

     The books with Tarma and Kethry in them are set in "the world of
Valdemar."  It's called Velgarth, and that's how Kerowyn got to be a herald.
 She's Kethry's granddaughter, after all.  
     If you do a "limited" Misty list, make it a Velgarth list, since those
works are integral to Valdemar's existence (No Mage War=no empire=nothing for
Baron Valdemar to flee=No Valdemar).
     Personally, I think that the best of Misty's latest works have been
non-Velgarth.  Firebird tops any of the Valdemar books since WoFury, IMNSHO.

I picked up SB in paperback on Monday! *wild-screeming-cheers-from-all*  Any
of you (like me) who haven't read it yet, it's available start pestering
your bookstores.

I read BTS first, then Arrows.  I thought it worked well, although it was a
tough choice whether to read Arrows or Vows second.  Kero hooked me
completely which made me want to read Vows.  The bookstore selection made my
mind up for me.

I think I would recommend reading them beginning with Arrows, BTS, Vows,
LHM, Winds, Gryphons, then Storms.  Newbies are much less likely to miss
important details if they read them in the relative order of which they were
written - especially for the earlier series.

Ambersong, you are in luck.  I bought a copy of it just a few weeks ago.  I
think I got it at Walden Books (paperback, of course).  So it shouldn't be
too hard to get.

If you like this styles, I highly recommend the books by Robin McKinley.
Deerskin, Beauty, and The Outlaws of Sherwood are all terrific.

Owlflight is currently available from Firebird in Portland, OR.  They 
have a web site and an 800 number.  I got my copy about three weeks ago.
I've been saving it for when things calm down a little so I can truly 
enjoy it.

Well, that sounds great....but I have no idea what you mean by folders
and boards...I don't have AOL. Sorry, you have to explain better....
Besides, I only have so much room on my site, so I can only have 1 chat

 The order I read Misty's Velgarth books in was: LHM, WoFate, Arrows, 
then _I_think_ WoC & Wofury, V&H, BtS, then SW, SR, Gryphons, & SB.

 I think BtS is still in print, but I'm not sure 'cause I got it at the 
same time as Lyon's Pride, & Lyon's Pride is out of print.

 SB's out in paperback?! Yes!!! :) I expect to have it by the end of the 
year. I'll be very surprised if I don't.

 I read BtS again the other day, & I was thinking. Since Sayvel is Savil, 
what do you think the chances are of Jasan being Jaysen? Huh? Huh?

 I was wondering, when does Newbiehood end?

	I've encountered the same thing, for example my Portuguese
friend. I don't know how to pronounce his name (though he did attempt
to tell me) and so I always feel strange saying it in the closest
approximation of it that I can figure. More I say it, less
uncomfortable I feel though, so . . . I guess it'll mess everything up
if I ever do learn how I'm really *supposed* to say it, but . . .=20

I don't know if this has been said or not, since I'm new to the list, 
but I thought that one of the saddest scenes was in The Black Gryphon 
when Skan is saying goodbye to Urtho right before he (Urtho) dies.
Others are right before Vanyel's death, when Kris dies, when Talia's 
gift goes out of control in Arrow's Flight, when Ulrich dies, and right 
after Tylendel dies.

Does anyone know of any way to get into the Queen's Own through the 
internet if you don't have AOL?  I'd love to join, but that would be the 
only way that I could.

About Companions communicating (or not communicating) with heralds, I 
think that the only reason the Yfandes was able to communicate with 
Stefen was because he was Vanyel's lifebonded, and he did have a gift, 
even if it wasn't a Heraldic Gift.  That would also explain why Rolan 
could talk to Dirk in Arrow's Fall.
