A web page called "Valdemar's Heartstone" has some good stuff on it, including instructions for joining Queen's Own and how to reach them email. They are also a member of the Heraldic Circle Webring which I had fun browsing. http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~ism/lackey/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Sep 1997 18:58:53 PDT From: "Becky Clayton" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: lots of stuff Message-ID: <19970915015854.9949.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla, listsibs I have a few subjects to discuss/ask/wonder about, so I will group them as best I can. Get your flame-throwers ready... Queen's Own Companion: In Magic's Promise, Vanyel tells Yfandes that he was surprised that Taver didn't choose him. I think there might be a difference between the herald-companion suddenly breaking because of death or repudiation and the bond deliberately being broken. Maybe Vanyel would have kept his bond with Yfandes and had a VERY weak bond with Taver. About Jisa (possibly) being Chosen before Shavri died and she got Taver, Vanyel says,"...for the presumptive King's Own that won't be a bonded choosing..." I thought that ALL Choosings were bonded and that breaking the bond would kill the Companion. (Yes, I know that contradicts with what I said earlier. I'm tired tonight.) In AoQ, Keren said that Talamir had expected her or Teren to be the next Queen's Own. I guess that means it can or has happened in the past. Founding Book/Series: I would love to see a book about the founding. Is it true that Misty has said that she will not write about it? Say it isn't so!!! Magic in Valdemar: I don't think that very many people in Valdemar ever knew what Vanyel had done to keep mages out. After he died, Stefen's task was to make people accept the Herald-Mages, and I think that Vanyel probably helped him out by "allowing" people to forget that magic ever existed. In the Winds trilogy, Elspeth mentions that it is very difficult to speak or even think of magic. This was probably a side-effect of Vanyel's spell with the vrondi. Pronunciation: I, personally, say VANyel, but that's just me. By the way, what's with all the sheep references that I keep seeing on the list? You could put all sorts of Valdemar trivia in there as well as names and definitions of people places and terms. You could also put in a reference section i.e, which books you can find certain people, places, terms, etc... By the way, is there a story anywhere about Talia going to Karse and becoming a Sun-Priest? Woundn't this always be the case. it makes more sense then having someone who was already chosen. The only way I could see that working would be to have two companions, because you can't sever the tie between a companion and it's chosen. And to my knowledge it has never said anything in any of the books about a herald that has two companions. I think that would cause some major jelousy between the two companions. JMHO. >> & >>Vanyel says,"...for the presumptive King's Own that won't be a bonded choosing..." I thought that ALL Choosings were bonded and that breaking the bond would kill the Companion.<< I see the non-bonded choosing being very rare. It only occurs when companions know ahead of time that the Monarch's Own won't be around much longer. The choosing companion gets the new trainee into training, and then when the MO dies, he or she bonds with the MO's companion. The first companion can then locate another trainee. I don't know what happens to your original companion if your an already bonded Herald. I would assume that he or she would fade, return to the grove, or sever the bond... >>Didn't I hear a discussion on the list a while back about Misty saying herself that she wasn't going to write about Valdemar's Founding?<< & >>If you get the tape Shadowstalker: Songs of Vanyel's Time, the first song is called Windrider and speaks of "Valdemar's Heir", and seems to be relating the story of the first Heralds. (Speculation on my part, but very logical). I would hope she is considering including this in any "prehistory" written, the songs just leaves you begging to know more.<< Misty said that she believes that the story of Sun & Shadow works best as a song only--no book. I haven't heard that she's said anything about the founding, but my theory is that she'll keep refering to it and dropping hints, but no book will center on it for at least 10 more years. >>Anyone happen to know when Owlflight comes out in paperback? << It generally takes a year for the paperback to come out. Sometimes, if a trade edition (as big as a hc, but with a sc) is released, the trade comes out 8-12 months after the hc, then, in another 6-8 months, the softcover. >>Where can I get Misty's music and is it available on CD?
