Does anybody have any ideas of were to start looking? I happened to stop in a Waldenbooks in downtown Cleveland on my way home from work, 5 minutes before they closed (at 5:30 PM -- sheesh!!). They had a copy of Owlflight, but I didn't have enough time to really get a good look at it. There wasn't any blurb text on the back. They also had a copy of just about every Valdemar book in paperback, and quite a few other paperbacks. And Storm Breaking in hardcover. I can't advise you on St. Louis book stores, but that's a pretty big city, so if I were you I'd just start going to all the book stores, starting with the closest ones, until you find it. ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Sep 1997 19:54:25 +0000 (GMT) From: Tensen To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Question! So shoot me now! **First of all, THANK YOU to all of you who replied to my questions about magic in Valdemar, and about Tre' valen. It's all coming back to me now.....ah-ha...I think I'm beginning to remember .....my amnesia is starting to recede!! I only have one complaint. Not meaning to flame you Angie, but I think you just gave away the end to the book I AM reading (WOC), not the one I ask about (WOF). That's ok, I usually don't mind *minor* spoilers, just the *major* ones. **Now about the pronounciation thing. I say van-YEL ( I seem to be in the minority). For those of you who say VAN-yel, it sounds to me too much like vandal (as in thief). Please don't take offence all you Vanyel fans, I really didn't mean it that way! And I agree with Greg W. --I say GUEST-en with a hard G, and Ulrich is Ul-rick. I think I read them this way because of the other books I read, which I mentioned before, "The Dark is Rising" series by Susan Cooper. They are set in England and Wales. She included in the story line, a pronounciation guide to the Welsh language. An exerpt from one of the books: "Double D is always a 'th' sound as in leather. Then, C is always a hard sound in Welsh, like in 'cat.' So is G, as a matter of fact--it's always g as in 'go.' Thus, If any of you have seen messages by Kenneth Allen Hyde, he signs his name 'Cennydd'. So it is not pronounced Ken - yed, as it looks, but Kenneth, just spelled differently! If anyone is interested in reading 'The Dark is Rising' books, here is one review: Malcolm Lithgow "This is a very clever series. It's style is such that moments from these books remain in your memories for years. It seems to tread the border between dreams and reality. I strongly recommend it. (This is a case of a children's story that is a superb adults book.)" This is getting too long, so I'm going to send it, and send the rest of my comments in another message. Especially the one (which ever one it was) where Amberdrakes daughter and the gryphon get lost in the woods. I thought that was very exciting! **Now about this atlas/dictionary idea, I am also a 'trekkie' and I bought The Star Trek Encylopedia. Certain people look different from one picture to the next. Does he do the cover art? One thing that bugs me is Misty kept describing Kerowyn and Kethry with reddish blond or dark blond hair; and on the covers, they have yellow hair! I hate that! I like to see realism. After much thought, my choice would be a Trond'ern (sp). I could have my bond birds :yes, keep us!, and I'd get to work with gryphons. Plus, with all of the alliances, I could travel with gryphon envoys to meet and make friends with all of the other people that I admire in that world. As a herald (please, no flames, just MHO) you DO get a companion, which is fantastic, but you're more limited in what you can do and where you can go. Of course, this may change, since when Talia was being trained, and Ylsa discovered that she was an empath, not a thought-senser, she had Neave project his worst memory. After that, she said that hopefully one day heralds would be welcome everywhere. Anyway, I'd prefer my birds and some gryphons. Wind to thy wings, and have a great weekend, all:) Trae, mindmate to Sax and Jaxom (peregrine falcon & firebird {who chase each other unmercifully}) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Sep 1997 08:32:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Greg Wooledge To: Mercedes Lackey mailing list Subject: Blues; Gryphon books Message-ID: Sherrie Chapman wrote: > I would definately have to be a Herald. Not all the blues are "not well schooled". The gang that attacked Talia in AotQ was the exception, rather than the rule. For a much more positive picture of the engineers, see the Storms trilogy. That's Silver Gryphon, the third book in that series. Personally, I thought Black Gryphon was excellent, and White and Silver were "just good". ------------ Greg Wooledge ------------- ------- wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com ------- --- http://kellnet.com/wooledge/main.html --- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Sep 1997 08:53:49 -0500 From: prince_ravnos-+AT+-juno.com (James B Collar) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: AOL listsibs please unblock JUNO listsibs Message-ID: <19970919.085350.9854.2.Prince_Ravnos-+AT+-juno.com> Hey all, sorry this has nothing to do with Misty, but if a juno member tries to send mail to AOL IT IS BLOCKED. if you do not believe me, i can personally send you a letter from AOL telling me this is so. All of the major chains can. If the book is out of print, check a used book store, of Out-of-Print dealer. Can we put this on the FAQ?
